dgbrit 258
They had funny windows I did buy a 3 piece suite there , I walked in & they said "Tradesmen's entrance is in the rear" , Then no one would serve me except for the young kid untill i bought the suite cash then they all wanted a piece. I used to get a kick out of going into places like that in my leather jacket.

ChrisB 150
Do you mean the shop on Mount Street? Was it this shop that later became Beattys Models shop?
dgbrit 258
Would have thought someone would know what i meant by funny windows !!! It was a bit lower down than the Odeon
Cliff Ton 10,435
The "funny windows" bit was discussed here about a year ago, although I can't remember which thread it was on.
Trevor S 2,003
dgbrit, are you talking about that shop with concave windows and had a wooden railing across the front instead of the normal window ledge?
mudgie49 401
That's the one Trevor S,and didn't the interior of the windows have angled mirrors on the floor?
Trevor S 2,003
http://nottstalgia.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=9583&hl=curved+windows cannot remember the floor mirrors though.
Paul Cotton 2
My grandfather married a Florence Bolderstone on 5th June 1911. Her mother was a Mary Ann Brown. I understood that Mary Brown was from the Browns of the Nottingham furniture store Henry Barker Smart and Brown. I was given to understand that the Browns disowned my great grandmother Mary Brown because she had married beneath their 'social class.!! Ah well.............C'est la vie
Cliff Ton 10,435
Unfortunately it's a bit too far away to see if there really were any 'funny windows'
pwatmo 3
Wasn't there a Wimpey Bar somewhere around there in the 60's too?
Cliff Ton 10,435
Are you possibly thinking of the one at the top of St James' Street? (the next road along)
pwatmo 3
What was the building opposite?
Cliff Ton 10,435
Do you mean the big office block? For many years was occupied by the GPO (later BT) and is now a hotel.
bazalways 26
Wasn't there a Wimpey Bar there in the 60's too? There was a coffee bar between the Carlton cinema & Mount St Bus Station in the Fifties/Sixties that stayed open until about Midnight at Weekends, not Wimpey's thought. I don't think they had been invented then.
denshaw 2,869
Was it called Silver Knight or something similar?
Cliff Ton 10,435
There's a name here which is a bit blurred, but it's something Cafeteria.
Rob.L 1,084
Do you mean the big office block? For many years was occupied by the GPO (later BT) and is now a hotel. It was called Walton House while BT occupied it. Back in the 70s, the sixth floor was hallowed ground as that was where the senior management had their offices - compete with wood paneling on the walls. While us plebs had to make do with standard civil service furniture. BT moved from there in 1999 to Castle Wharf on Canal Street (and will be moving out of there next year, too, as its nearly empty now that many people have moved out). Under the building, and next to the Wimpy, was a Nat West branch. I still recall the sort code from when I had an account there!
Cliff Ton 10,435
Here's a wider view of the cafe on Mount Street. Still can't see the name, but you can see the early version of Maid Marion Way.
Rob.L 1,084
Just checked my "Changing face of Nottingham" book. There's a couple of photos of the cafe, still blurry, but it looks like it was called Churchills Cafeteria.
fch782c 144
Excuse my ignorance but is this anywhere near the derby road cathedral
Rob.L 1,084
And the building next to the cafe in the second picture, taken in 1963, is the Midland Design Centre
LizzieM 9,497
Why was it called Walton House? Is Walton a well known Nottingham family? Just wondered because of the Walton Hotel in the Park.
Rob.L 1,084
Good question, LizzieM, but one that's never been asked as far as I know!
mick2me 3,033
The Sliver Knight Cafe is mentioned elsewhere. AFAIK it was further towards Derby Road island on the same side. A wooden temporary affair.
