Nottingham from above - Parliament Street

Looking from the north side of the city centre. The white building approximately in the middle is the Elite cinema. The road coming in from the bottom-right is Goldsmith Street. Over on the centre-left is Holy Trinity church still in Trinity Square.

In terms of the seating capacities of the two theatres, although both varied over the years, a book I've got gives the Empire as 2,500 in 1912 (although this may include standing places), reduced to 1,763 by 1946.

The Theatre Royal could hold 1,997 seated in 1897, plus 1,003 standing(!). By the time of its closure for remodelling in 1977 this had been reduced to 1,456 seated only. The 1977 rebuilding, of course, reduced the capacity a lot further by replacing the old gallery benches with proper seats.

I notice in the photo the Gaumont looks quite large too.

What I find amazing in these pics of the city centre, is all the buildings filling in behind the streets we walked past, and having no idea they existed. I wonder what they were? Housing?

I think housing is the answer. We tend to forget how many people lived right in the city centre in those days. In between all the buildings in the "Above" photos are narrow entrances to Alleys and Yards and Terraces, which led on to places like this.

Interesting, but from the time of the picture though, thirties/forties, was there any housing left?

City centre buildings were mainly retail, offices, pubs and hotels, entertainment venues etc and many were actually deceptively large spaces, going back in a very higgledy-piggledy fashion, behind the impressive street facades. Small workshop operations existed up some of the alley-ways too.

I would imagine all those 'infill' buildings are still there? Would love to get in those rabbit warrens and see what they are used for nowadays.

You're right ! I was thinking too far back. A few of those alleys have survived today as shopping arcades / walks. Bridlesmith Walk; Cobden Chambers on Pelham St; Norfolk Place on Long row; Poultry Arcade; Hurts Yard.
