Cliff Ton 10,454
Another view from the early 50s. The road at an angle on the left is Wollaton Street, with Upper Parliament Street making a V-shape. Among other things, you can see the old Mount Street bus station in the lower right, and also the area where Barton and Trent buses used to park on Granby Street at the rear of the Odeon cinema. BilboroughShirley 1,120
Thanks for the great photo Cliff Ton. Looking at this 50s photo and seeing the old Mount Street bus station reminds me of a short cut my mum and dad used to take me on to get from Woolworths to Mount Street. This was when we had to hurry to catch the E1 bus. I hated this short cut because we went down a narrow alley way between two tall buildings. When I was very young I used to look up and it seemed to me like the two tall buildings were going to fall in on us. Also on the right hand side one of the buildings had a big grill on it that looked very sinister to me. Looking at the photo I guess this would have been between two of the larger buildings top right. Am I right and do you remember this alley? Thanks.
TBI 2,351
BilboroughShirley, from Woolies, you'd probably come up either Stanford St or Castlegate, so I think you might be referring to Truswell Yard. Just by the lampost.... https://www.google.co.uk/maps/@52.9512332,-1.1502512,3a,75y,338.77h,86.14t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sQk-Rf1rpebH27n_AEZCAaQ!2e0!7i13312!8i6656!6m1!1e1
BilboroughShirley 1,120
#3 Brilliant! Thanks TBI. That is the alley shown on your link. I did not know it has a name. I learn so much from members on this site.
Mess 616
Another fascinating picture which I thoroughly enjoyed studying thanks. Just to confirm the date is definitely pre 1953 because you can see Queen Victoria's statue next to The Market Square

I also remember that alleyway because we used to walk from Broad Marsh bus station, up Stanford Street, then up Truswell Yard, to get another bus on Granby Street to go to my grandparents. It's strange to find 50 years later that someone was doing exactly the same things I was doing back then.
TBI 2,351
Yes, when I worked in Broadmarsh Centre in the seventies, I caught the bus to Eastwood from Mount St. Up Stanford St and the alley was directly opposite at the top, a natural walk-through, although it was actually easier to walk up Castlegate. You always seemed to meet somebody halfway, coming from the opposite direction, to have to squeeze past.
