I like the idea of these 'Top Five' type things. My missus says it's a 'bloke thing' and who am I to disagree, (I wouldn't dare!)
So, from in your own time, it can be in person or on the TV, who are the five most talented batsman you've seen in the good old Green and Gold? Here's the five that immediately come to mind with me:
1. Garfield Sobers
Maybe Notts never got the best out of the great all-rounder but for me he was clearly the greatest cricketer of them all. He could have been a Test player in any of his disciplines, whether it be batting, pace bowling, finger spinner or wrist spinner. Doubtless if he'd put his mind to it probably wicketkeeper too! Sober's batting was effortless and based on sound, correct stroke play. On his day he could absolutely destoy an attack. Bonus ppoints for being a 'lefty' too - even more diifcult for the bowlers to keep to a line.
2. Derek Randall
I always believe Derek was hugely underestimated and should have gained far more England caps. Doubtless if he'd played for Middlesex and Mike Gatting for Notts he would have trebled the amount of appearances his natural ability deserved. Derek really showed his metal against Dennis Lillee in the Centenary Test, Lille famously saying to him 'I hate bowling at you - I can't hit a moving target'. An incredible cover point fielder too - probably as good an outfielder as I've seen.
3. Tim Robinson
Not so many fireworks as the two abover perhaps but nevertheless a very effective run-gatherer for over twenty years with Notts. An ever-demendable opener.
4. Clive Rice
Another great all-rounder. A typical overseas batsman with straight bat and very direct and forceful style. Superb driver of the ball.
5. Chris Broad
A tremendous foil for Robinson being a left-hander, tall with a good reach. Another good driver of the ball.
