I've just heard this and am now no longer a Labour supporter!!
When VAT was temporarily reduced to 15%, the Chancellor added 2% duty to fuel to offset the reduction in tax collected from motorists. Now that VAT has been increased to 17.5% again this hidden tax has not been removed - hence recent rises in your fuel costs.
Sign the petition at the link below to have this stealth tax removed.

It seems everybody is out to destroy this government, especially those who are damning them for claiming too much on their expenses, but fact is, it was all above board and this was their entitlement, now whether or not that entitlement was at times overtly excessive is a matter of conjecture, but one has to realise the massive effort these people put in to ensure our country is up to the mark, thus any monies they need or require in maintaining this standard of service, would in my eyes be wholly justified.

I know, but really it's local councillors who need help, I think they ought to pay them? not a silly wage though, maybe £900 a week?

Have to agree with much in your post, particularly the 'massive effort' that most commit to...
From the many political diaries that I've read, their typical workload is not one that many would cherish.
Conversely, their cause is not helped by that classic Tory twit Nicholas Winterton who has, today, objected to the proles who use Standard Class rail travel.

He should speak with Nottstalgia's 'Man of the Month' - M Portillo Esq, who even has the gall to interview 'em...
