Why is it when I wish to purchase a television that I have to give my name and address to the authorities whereby they can then check up to see if I have a licence for it?
afterall, I may wish to use it as a ornament, coffee table, or object d art, or I might even be giving it away, it's entirely up to me what I do with it! ...
my thoughts are that if they wish to confirm I have a tv licence, then I suggest they get off their fat @rses and get out the detector van out or any other hi tech sytem they need to employ.. it seems it's another one of those big brother schemes akin to the DVLA whereby they've got us all economically bang to rights! ..

I shouldn't moan though really, i suppose it's just the way Britain has evolved, they're basically looking after our wellbeing and have our best interests at heart, and all whilst nodoubt easing the burden on the taxpayer..
BUT, I rue the day when the letter arrives informing me it's my turn to have the barcode tatooed on the back of me neck!

Do you think we will ever get to that stage in our lifetime?

I agree with what you are saying to a degree, but I would be peeved if I thought I was the only one with the government on my back. If you were the one not paying the licence fee and getting away with it, would you still think the same way?

Televisions that are purchased in a clandestine way are not registered with any agency so are the Government, in there own way, encouraging us to break the law so they can catch us out and make more money on the fines?

What about the viewers who buy a black and white licence and watch in colour? I know this happens in the area where I live.

When we get old enough we don't have to pay at all, the only problem with that is we cannot see that well and we are too critical of what is transmitted. It will give us another topic of conversation though, 'If I had to pay for a licence I would send the television back', said, of course while you flick through the 99 channels you rent from Sky.

Have you ever seen the postcard from the TV licensing which they send out with an chameleon on both sides one in colour and one in black and white asking you which one you are seeing on your telly ?

On the plus side just think the older you get and you forget what day it is , you'll be able to watch all them films you had seen back in the 50s 60s and they be like a new release blockbuster.

Don't let the bastards grind you down

Yes.. if others get away without paying and are prepared to take the risk of being fined, then good luck to them, it is of no consequence to me..
I just disagree that they have the right by law to ask my name upon the purchase of an electrical item thus giving them the right to keep tabs upon my good self.. I would sooner not buy the item and walk away, which is exactly what I did in Argos when the cashier started punching in my details on the computer.. a different system however exists at Asda, and I was given a form to fill in at my leisure.. of course.. Michael Mouse of 336 Railway cuttings, Cheam sprang straight to mind.. only problem is this could possibly be a legitimate address..
then if that is the case, I only hope Mr. Mouse has a licence!

Bloody glad the first amendment prohibits that sort of licensing!
I didn't have to have a license in Oz either, they did away with it many years ago and made "Aunty ABC" pay her own way!
We have PBS over here, "Public Broadcasting Service" which gets some funding from the Gov, but must raise it's own funds other ways, usually a three or four times a year fund raising on air.
Don't see why the Beeb can't pay it's own way these days with all the programs it exports around the world, plus all the CD's and DVD's it sells.

There's always been the cry that the BBC should go commercial and go it's own way, but strangely enough they've always shyed away from this idea, instead informing us of the wonderful worldwide broadcasting service that they operate, and all the monies from the licence fee are needed to maintain this magnificent service.. well 'thank you very much' I say it's very comforting to know that those in Katanga enjoy the news updates as much as we do..
only problem is, how much do those in Katanga pay for the privilege?

bear in mind though, they do have compassion, as those who are blind receive a 50% reduction on the licence fee! .. £63.25 to listen to the telly! - value or what?

A mate of mine who lives in Cornwall, has a doctorate in electronics, told me how to "screen" a TV so as it couldn't be detected by those pesky gov'mint vans!! If I was still living in "Blighty" I'd go that way and say B*##*@!s to the Beeb B)

I forsee the day when all electrical retailers will have a mandatory obligation to take a dna swab upon the purchase of a tv, then having to send it off to a national database for examination and dissection..
and woe betide anyone who hasn't paid their fee, as methods will be in place whereby a warning will flash across the tv screen to effect you have not paid, and the tv will shut down.. all whilst automically debiting the fine from your national pre-paid summons account! ..
thus it would be very infuriating if for say you were watching the X Factor and it caused you to miss the final results, it jreally just wouldn't be worth the risk of not having a licence!

Has anyone seen the ads about the Internet? It appears that we are being watched by the government and Big Brother is here already...

The latest talk is of spy chips being found in mobile phones and computers.. my bet is in a couple of years it will be a mandatory fitment in the new breed of car.. every movement will be monitored by sattelite, any speeding, parking, or seatbelt infraction will thus trigger an automatic tarrif..
of course the blurb will state a huge saving for the taxpayer, and the word 'SAFETY' will also be mentioned at it's inception, thus it will play straight into the hands of the thicko's who will immediately declare .. "what a wonderful idea, we've never had it so good" !

From BBC
"Cameras track criminals on move
The fixed cameras in Derby will mean 24-hour coverage, seven days a week.

Chf Insp Manjit Thandi said: "This now gives us the capability to pinpoint the movements of criminals travelling around the Derby area.

"We are using this up to date technology to target those people using the road networks around the city for illegal purposes and hope it leads to more arrests of people for serious criminal offences."

Actually, villains seeing this will move their activities to the suburbs!
