Cliff Ton 10,464
I took several images from the "Britain from Above" site and merged them into one enlarged view of Nottingham in the early 50s. A few things worth noting - you can read the name on Griffin & Spalding's blinds; top centre is Victoria Station; you can see the name of Yates' in the lower left; all the taxis down the south side of the Square and buses on the opposite side; the Black Boy still there; etc etc. Shakespeare St http://nottstalgia.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=14599 Castle Gate http://nottstalgia.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=14629 Parliament St http://nottstalgia.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=14651 Daybrook http://nottstalgia.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=14780 Arkwright St http://nottstalgia.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=14841

PeverilPeril 3,281
Thanks Cliff Ton That's the City centre from my teens, when it became an indelible memory. Buy you a pint for that one

Guest
Very nifty work Cliff, weird to see Trinity church, given what is there now.
Michael Booth 7,364
It's a good photo, Ciff Ton but what pleases me most is that the Members have recognized your work with (so far) 20 Likes.
Cliff Ton 10,464
It's amazing how many locations in that photo have been mentioned in Nottstalgia threads.
Cliff Ton 10,464
There's something visible in Robbie's photo (and several others I've seen) and I'm intrigued to know what they are. The single-storey white buildings on Huntingdon Street at the north end of Vic Station. Here's an enlargement of them - whatever they were. Almost look like rows of prefabs, but I know that isn't the answer.
Robbie 39
#13 Cliff ton, It was the site of an old school but I don't know the name between Union Road and Cairns Street. The rows of single storey buildings could well be the classroom blocks. I think it was Huntingdon Street School
TBI 2,351
Wasn't Huntingdon St School on the opposite side of the road, further up on the Woodborough Rd corner. The bit where those single-storey buildings are sited were previously houses I believe, between Cairns St and what was William St.
Guest
Great stuff! In photo #10 rsj's and girders can be seen behind co op opposite electric sub station, must be the high section? Also four houses going up towards Lambert's, when they were knocked, Skills had a booking office on that site.
Guest
Ta Cliff, photo #13 almost the view out of my bedroom window, 4 th chimney stack from the right was my house opposite The Yorker,Jolleys taxis on the other corner.what was on the site of Frank sytner/Aldi then?? Cliff Ton 10,464
And this is a better view of them, derelict in later years. The building with the weird roof is the first Victoria bus station (the aircraft hangar).
Guest
I seem to remember those buildings used for some purpose for the deaf or learning difficulties, sure my Mum bought something from an open day there
TBI 2,351
Looks like those buildings are in the same configuration as the schools on Robbie's map, so may be one and the same, a specialist school like Ian says.
Guest
My mate Russ, worked at Wrights nearby and it was either a special school or a yop training centre before it closed.
Ayupmeducks 1,730
#13, those buildings were prefabs classrooms, art, and metalwork classrooms for Huntingdon St Sec School, the ones to the right were the school meal kitchens and a couple for serving kids school meals. I got me bum burned in the "annex" school yard, had a box of matches in my back pocket and slipped over, never moved so fast in my life...LOL
Michael Booth 7,364
I wish I'd been there to see it, Ayupmeducks, haha.

Guest
What is the big building with all the windows under #26 and above the dome, there is a light coloured chimney to the left?
TBI 2,351
It looks like it's behind what used to be the Nottingham Journal offices. Perhaps an extension with printing works?
Cliff Ton 10,464
That's what I was thinking. Today, there's an extension to the rear, but you can see where it's been added to the original building. http://binged.it/1FSHm5a
