  1. The Carlton Road shop was not to my knowledge ever called "Ernest Whiting & Sons". The property eventually comprised of 27, 29 & 31 Carlton Road plus the "back shop" in Handel Street & the three gold balls pawnbroker sign was above the door to 31 Carlton Road, although the pawnbroking side of the business was exclusively ( at least post WW2 ) conducted in the back shop on Handel Street, The business was started by my great grandfather John Whiting, and traded as "John Whiting & Sons" At the height of the business there were 6 shops at various locations around the eastern and

  2. Beautiful area Bilboro-Lad, humidity used to get to me at times, although the beaches did give some relief. I worked at Wongawilli Colliery when I lived in Wollongong, we were owned by AI&S so all our coal went to the steel works. On "dog watch" we'd look out from the top of the incline and watch the lightning hundreds of miles out to sea...Some great views from the top of the escarpment too.

  4. Just as a side comment, I was born and brought up in Nottingham (Hyson Green to be specific) but now live and work in Teesside. The public transport here is dire and expensive. The tram system is of great benefit to Nottingham. Its only when you move away when you realise what a great city Nottingham is.

  5. Definately a fan. When I am in Nottingham I get to the Plough in Radford when I can. That pub has the atmosphere of the old pubs I recall very fondly from the late 70s and early 80s. I adore the EPA. Pity I am usually in the car when I visit so I cant sample the beer as much as I would wish

  8. One afternoon turn working at Derby station in the late 1980s, I was instructed by the staion chief to clear the old clothes out of the cloak room in the shunter's cabin at the north end of platform 6. It was full of really greasy jackets and sleeved waistcoats that shunters had used to keep warm in winter. There was about a hundred of them and I was instructed to pile them onto a porters barrow and take them to the skip at the west end of platform 1. So! I went through all the pockets and rescued the following one set of ticket clippers. about 30 plastic acme thunderer whistles about 1

  9. No, it was double track. That photo shows it in later years long after passenger services had ceased and it had been singled.

  10. In France Fanny is still given to children, but it does not have a second meaning like in the UK, some other old names are Agnes, Gertrude, Violet, Walter, Gladys, Rose, Edna, How did you manage to pick a selection of names like that? My Fathers sisters name was Edna Rose, Edna being female for Edward, he had a sister named Doris Violet, and a Sister-in-law named Gladys. I had a Great Grandfather named Walter. You almost covered my entire family tree in one post!

  11. Lol, the joys of motorcycling! Will ask Mick about that trip, but you're not confusing it with his detour through through the open doors of Marks &Spencer Wheeler Gate are you? Had left the market square on that old harley 750, but failed to get round the s bend or manage to stop so through the doors and down the steps inside! hell of a job getting it back up them! good job it was a summer saturday when the doors were open Nice photo Cliff Ton, had a good look myself but couldn't find any, I thought I was right re it being a one time "island", don't recall it as a garage though, more

  13. Re the above, it was Nearest and Dearest with Hylda Baker and Jimmy Jewell and Pledges Pickle factory ! As someone with an interest in family history , strange christian names are a godsend ! It can make tracking someone via various census etc so much easier . If I get lost trying to sort out my Janney relos from Lincolnshire I just go back to one with the fairly rare name of Solomon and I know where I am then .

  14. When I was in the Bahamas our taxi driver was called Prince Philip, & when on a cruise ship the waiter was called Jesus. I often say Prince Phill drove our cab & Jesus served our grub..

  19. Sorry to hear some folks feel that way, but as they say here. "America, love it or leave it." Every body has that choice. Places change and we change. We often go back expecting everything to be the same as when we lived there, it just ain't so. I left not so much because of a dislike of Nottingham, but because I wanted to see the world and try some new opportunities. I got a good start in life in and around Nottingham. I tend to remember it the way it was and always will.
