  1. GOOSE FAIR It was a dark autumnal Saturday night But in the distance the sky was bright Feint music carried in the still night air As we walked along to Nottingham’s Goose Fair The pavements soon overflowed with the crowd As the noise of the fair grew ever loud Then an awe inspiring blanket of light Welcomed us to the fairground site And as the music blared loud and strong We were swallowed up by the throng From hot food stalls there did exude Mouth-watering aromas of cooking food Hot dogs with onions and of course Pots of mushy peas with mint sauce Dotted around the fair we cam

  2. A few years ago I started to study the history of the area I was living in. Thinking there was nothing of interest. What!!?? It just got too addictive. I would recommend it but don't think that nothing ever happens in quiet places. It may not always have been like that.

  3. I have always loved Goose Fair, the smells the crowds the noise, each year from being knee high to a grasshopper I would always get ten bob from my uncle to spend at the fair. It would last most of the night. When I arrived at my teenage years my friends and I use to walk from St Ann's over the chase on to Mansfield road this was every night before it opened, now the reason we went each night was to see if we could meet any fellows never did though, only met chaps who wanted one thing. Any way to keep up the Tradition of being a Nottingham person we arranged to get married on Goose Fair Satur

  7. A lady at work (QMC) asked why the water tasted different? (she's from Birmingham, a soft water area) I said "it's because the water here is hard!" She said "oh, does it go round beating up other waters then? Made me laugh, she was in her 90's.

  9. I recall in our days in the 60's there were steam driven gallopers consisting of a small red painted steam engine driving a generator which was situated within the centre of the roundabout, the chimney exited out the centre of the canvas roof, every time your horse went past the boiler you got a blast of heat and burning coal, elf and safety wouldn't stand for that nowadays I suppose. Another set of gallopers was driven by a chuffing great gleaming showmans traction engine usually sitting near the corner whelk store and linked by huge cables, it was operated by a sooty, grimy youth surrounded

  10. As a very keen amateur brewer water quality is important. Soft water is best for lager/pilsner style (bottom fermented beer). In fact the Czech republic which produces the finest of all pilsners, has very soft, almost pure water. To have water of that quality is almost impossible in UK, no matter what treatments you give it. Its about taking away minerals, not adding to them. Guinness depends on hard water. It balances out the heaviness of the deep dark malts, and makes it very very smooth. I often artificially harden water for stouts to get this balance. That said I am not a fan of stouts,

  11. My first visit to Goose Fair was as a 6 or 7 year old in the 50s. We lived in Beechdale so caught a bus into town then got one of the Goose Fair special buses. Like most of the young lads I came home with a bow and arrow. My mum took me on the Cake Walk and I hung on tight and rigid rather than "go with the flow" I was rooted to the spot in fear and had to be lifted off by the showman. Remember those black balloons with a face and a red feather with a piece of wire rather than string? Think they were popular with the kids in the 60s. I had a very near miss at Goose Fair in the late 60s. I'd

  14. Oh Mr Cameron, now would seen the time To add another verse to our deathless prosy rhyme. Now you're cutting income tax, benefitting all Those you wish to vote for you at a local hall. Someone has to pay for it, and through the nose I guess, But you say nothing vital like the 'starving' NHS, So take it from the services. We'll have our free prescription. We can face the enemy!!! We just bring back conscription!!!

Oh Mr Cameron, it's too good to be true, You promise each a doctor but won't you tell us who Will train into the business to help old fuddy duddies, When most of our school leavers train in Media Studies? Oh Mr Cameron, Apprenticeship's the thing, So think of all the benefits your policies will bring. But train a youth in industry and he/she will get shirty! You can't think that on leaving school they'll get their hands all dirty! Oh Mr Cameron after the election You promise us Utopia, or nearly such perfection. The other parties promise this, yes, every party tries To promise us th

  16. Notts County have made a really good start to the season and have the best defence in League 1. They've won 3, drew 5 and lost 2, only conceding 7 goals, which is the lowest in Div.1. If the Magpies can keep improving and turn some of these draws into wins, then it could be a good season for them. Here is the Crewe v Notts report. http://www.nottinghampost.com/Crewe-Alexandra-0-Notts-County-3-Match-report/story-23021486-detail/story.html

  19. I have been reading this with great interest. I have to tell you that some of the teachers mentioned are no longer with us - Mr Redding, Mr Robshaw, Mr Gilliver, Mr Newcombe, Miss England, Mr Bristow, Dr Peake, Mr Williams. I last heard a few years ago that Miss Betts had Alzheimers Disease and I have no doubt that some of the other Members of Staff have gone to the Staffroom in the sky. It was Miss Louden, Lois, who was the Maths Teacher and played cricket for England Ladies. Her nickname was Passion Flower or Pash when I was there 1961-8, then on to University. I still go up to Nottingham f

  23. Ahhh, different then, most around my workshop die from rodent poisoning, I even keep the cat out of there for fear she may eat a fresh dead mouse. I doubt there's a lot of the poison, an anti coagulant, in a mouse to hurt a cat, but I err on the side of safety.

  24. I have'nt been for probably 20 years, I remember when many of the rides were driven by steam traction engines, I note what Fynger says, no side shows, wasn't that the best bit, Mouse Town, the Flea Circus, the Boxing Booth, the Worlds Tallest Man, the same one's every year, but that was all part of the fun. Do they still have the same naff stalls at the top of the Forest selling all sorts of rubbish but amazing whelks and cockles, or has all that gone as well, walk along there and you came out on the back streets to be accosted by prostitutes when trying to cut through to Ilkeston Road to catc

Oops sumats gone wrong, I meant to reply, I was helping my late Father-in-law fit a kitchen at Belper when I found a dead mouse at back of old electric cooker, I went to put it in the bin & the farmers wife took it of me & threw it to the chickens, they went berserk over it as it was devoured, she asked if we wanted any eggs? err "no thanks" said us 2..

  27. Well it's that time of year again. Is anyone going to 'Goose Fair' this year. The weather is good, so now is the time to fill up on those Hot Peas, Chips, Burgers, Brandy Snaps, and all manner of foods from the different Countries. There was so much selection last year. We didn't know where to start, or finish, come to think of it. We have not ruled out a visit yet. Just hoping the weather keeps up, as a visit it is usually decided on the day. So it's a Definite May Be from us then?

  28. This bit in the 1944 film They Knew Mr Knight always fascinates me as train leaves Victoria Station. Ignore the actors and look out the view from the windows you can see the area of the Broadmarsh , though can't spot any buses . Castle is recognisable at the top of the view . Just catch the edge of the Widdowsons factory coming into view . Before that theres a quite an ornate Georgian building , whats that ?

  33. Bilbraborn sitting bottom left at Weekday Cross viaduct, plus the bus station as well, and the demolished girder bridge over Midland Station in the distance, looks like Bilbraborn is considering a chat with the fireman of the 8F and vice versa, I hope it was polite. Iron ore from High Dyke to Stanton Ironworks methinks. Can you recall matey, I'd just been sitting in one of the caves in the dark near the Ice Stadium trying to load a colour film into my brothers 35mm camera, it proved a disaster, my colour slides of the following Merchant Navy Pacific were destroyed by Kodak, such is life.
