  1. I watched a report on Channel 4 News this evening on the anniversary of Churchill's death. I've never seen anything so disrespectful, biased and defametory. It sought to portray him in the worst possible way. This man, who only last year was voted greatest ever Englishman, was described by Channel 4 News as a racist, imperialist, misogynist and 'the butcher of Gallipoli'. The incredibly smug and self-satisfied Alex Thomson glossed over Churchill's role in saving the Western world from tyranny. Instead he engaged in his usual Brit-bashing and suggested that Churchill's faults were at odds with

  2. The latest book I am reading is on Nottingham and published in 1938 has come up with some very interesting facts . Did you Know? After the War, Nottingham was faced with a serious housing shortage. The Housing Committee embarked upon an extensive housing policy, covering considerable number of estates, and since 1919 no less than 15,000 houses for the working class have been built. I know it's only trivia but it could prove very useful if you are interested in Nottingham pub quiz questions or after dinner speaking. I will post more facts and figures that have helped Nottingham develop over

  3. Rubbish!....You put on here anything you think will be of interest. Those with their own books won't need to read it....others with no interest aren't forced to read it... But some of us are interested.

  4. Yes. I'm sure if tossers like Alex Thomson had been around in 1939 he'd have gone for appeasement. It's easy to look back at history and pontificate about people and events, as if you know better. Churchill wasn't perfect - we know that. But.....cometh the hour, cometh the man. He was what we needed at a time of crisis. Channel 4's character assassination of him was crass and impertinent. They thought they were being terribly modern by not following the 'standard' line that he was a great man and a courageous leader. As a keen student of history it always puzzled me how the electorate rej

  5. Harold Wilson lead us to victory? Yeah right!! Churchill was in the right place at the right time. At least because of him we are free to hate him if we want to. No one is perfect. I would be suspicious of anyone who is. There will always be class divide. It is part of life. I doubt if this country could keep going without it. And I never indulge in the politics of envy. I had an acquaintance many years ago who was of the higher echelons of the class divide. He was as rich as it got. Wanted for nothing. But he and his wife would have given it all up and lived in a dustbin if on

I'm a baby-boomer now enjoying retirement and playing with my collection of old cars - well, it keeps me off the streets! Also interested in local history, old buildings... in fact general nostalgia; things were better in the old days, weren't they

  11. I think one of the most important things he did was to encourage continued resistance early in the war when it would have been so very easy to give in. If we had not continued to fight the Nazi's we would certainly have been occupied/eradicated like all the rest and in that sense #61 Churchill did give us freedom of speech or allowed us to continue with that privilege.

  15. Just before Bonfire Night a roups of us lads would knock on the doors around Forest Fields asking for any old furniture for the bonfire. If we were lucky to get two armchais with casters we would race them down the pavements on either side of Premier Road. The onl problem was stopping them and getting three or four boys off them before you careered onto Gregory Boulevard. I recall getting into big trouble at home for scuffing some shoes used as break pads!

  16. Ann, This type of thread is always going to create some smutty remarks of which has upset some people. My wife would never watch Benny Hill or the Carry on Films because of the sexual connotations so I know what her view is. My posting was meant as a bit of fun, personally there is nothing wrong with those women at all, It is what they represented formed the basis of my joke, It's my sense of humour which is obviously not yours. It is probably better suited to the pub tap room environment and I will keep this in mind in the future. But from my own working experience I can assure you women h

  20. Been watching a series of programmes on Sir Winston Churchill this week, as it's the 50th anniversary of his death. What a great inspiration, and a great leader. His determination to win was unbelievable. Who on this earth cannot be inspired by his speeches and quotes. I for one would have followed him to the ends of the earth. Anybody not so inspired, put your hand on your heart. I bet there's nothing there !!!

Further snow accumulations are likely particularly over the Lincolnshire Wolds and the Peak District. Elsewhere mainly dry but frosty with widespread ice and a bitterly cold northerly wind. Minimum Temperature -2C. Sunday:Sunday will be another cold day with a biting northerly wind, early snow showers will quickly become confined to the Lincolnshire coast. Some sunny intervals further west. Maximum Temperature

  27. Is it SP's fault that Assombalonga and Antonio have lost their sense of where the net is, or that a defensive back header doesn't have enough power on it? They seem to be creating the chances, but no-one can put them away. Just two weeks ago, we were all in football heaven, having beaten that lot from down the A52 and SP was in charge then. If SP goes, who comes in, and how long does he get? Expectations at the beginning of the season were unrealistic (boosted because it was SP) and results were mainly gained over teams who still sit below Forest in the table. We all want the Reds back in the

  44. #27. I think someone should point out That in 1898 Churchill was a young officer in the 4th Hussars. He was sent on secondment to the 21st Lancers. During the battle of Omdurman this regiment of 400 men were sent against a force of 2500 plus enemy. Churchill took part in that cavalry charge were 3 VC's were awarded. So much for your armchair warrior's. If you ain't been there and done it etc.

  45. There is no disputing that Churchill had his flaws, some of which he was happy to admit. There were also times during his career where his actions did him no credit. But there is little doubt that his leadership of the country during the war years and his inspiration of the British public showed what a truly remarkable figure he was. It seems entirely right and proper that we should recognise his great achievements on this anniversary.
