  1. Once in a while we witness one of life's poignant moments. For ten years or so, the fellow who has lived across the road from us for twenty years or more, has suffered with a brain tumour. For some years it did not seem too bad, though he had to finish working. But for the last two years or so his condition became serious, and it was obvious that one day it was going to be terminal. That day arrived last week. We came home from shopping and noticed a plain van on his drive, and knew it was all over. From my window I watched the funeral people get into the van and move off the drive, revealing

  4. Just heard on the news down here at the coast of a caravan fire started by a dog being left in the caravan with an electric fire left on apparently nocking a cusheon onto the fire, sadly the dog was killed in the fire.god only knows why someone would leave an electric fire unattended even without a dog in there.

  5. What mystifies me is why people bring their dogs in the first place to leave them locked up in the caravan or awning while they go out all day. The dog invariable spends most of the time barking which causes annoyance and distress to the other campers and us wardens, and they seem to think that caravans and awnings don't get as hot as cars in the summer months for some reason. And yes the other dangers that lurk with unattended pets. Perhaps someone shoiuld take these people to court for abandoning their pet to such a dreadful fate.

  8. Nothing to do with kids parties, but their behavior. We were at a restaurant at a golf course yesterday evening. Quite a few families had come to dine. As we sat there a roadrunner came up the lawn and got pretty close to the restaurant. They are such cute (big) birds, and I was just about to get my camera out when the brats 2 tables away, ran out the door yelling and chased the poor bird until they could go no further. Everyone thought this so cute, except me who could have cheerfully strangled the little barstewards. My kids would have no more thought of doing that than fly in the air. They

  11. It seems a lifetime ago but I was a copper in those disturbances. (I was not a copper for long, just a couple of years, before going back into the army) I was at the unpleasantness on Alfreton Road, with us coppers taking a line just a bit further down from the Running Horse. It was a bit surreal. Lots of noise and anxious anticipation but the actual event was not that bad. We had some good sergeants who did the leading. I recall my shift inspector making a fuss and bellowing loudly when we boarded the transit vans to go to Nottingham from Worksop, but had definitely boggered off by the time

  12. Spent the past couple of days building a new trellis from wood scrounged from the local council tip. Made a 2" x 2" frame for strength. Added sturdy cross members followed by uprights. The finished product was strong enough to allow me to climb up it. It should last 25yrs and see me out Total cost of trellis: £2 for half a box of screws.

  13. Here's a photo (not the clearest) of a 3 on Maid Marian Way sometime in the 1970s. One of the later examples Barton's home made BTS vehicles, but it must have been on its last legs by that time.

  14. New member here, rummaging around and finding various interesting old threads... I remember a family meal at the Black Boy, with my dad having crêpes suzette, flambé'd on a trolley next to the table. Dead posh! I still have some memory of the atmosphere, the thick carpet, the dark wood tables... I also recall - either on that occasion or another - leaving my model of Thunderbird 2 in there under a chair and us having to go back to retrieve it...

  19. And a pretty version... It would seem from the plans that the architect was aware that hefty pillars would be necessary from the cellar level to support the building.I would have thought any cave systems would have been found before building, and filled in.

  20. All the photos I've ever seen of the former Black Boy Hotel are taken along the road looking at the building from a sideways angle; I'd never seen a picture of it from the front to get a real idea of what it looked like. Until I came across this.....they don't make hotels like this any more. And this was demolished in the 60s to be replaced by what is now the Primark building

  21. I have the greatest respect for dog handlers. Or to be more precise, the dogs. I accidentally trod on a police dog as it was under a table in the crew room. The crew room table was a snooker table covered over by wood during duty. I was puzzled by the banging on the underside of the table. The dog appeared between my knees and quite silently bared its teeth, staring quite directly at me. I asked Jock if this was his dog, and he just chuckled and let me sweat for a bit (which I did, a lot actually) and eventually Jock called the dog away. He later reminded me that the dog would not attack unles

  22. These were West Bridgford Urban District Council buses which ran from the Market Square to West Bridgford and Broad Marsh to Clifton. They ceased running in 1968 when they were taken over by Nottingham City Transport. I assume you're referring to the latter by a 'beige and olive green' livery. Not just plain green and cream?

  23. I had a phone call on the land line today from a work colleague who asked me if I had read the text he sent me 4 days ago, asking me to do something. I said no an explained that my mobile phone battery went flat and as it was the holiday I did not charge it up. Calm, polite, assertive and safeguarding a bit of "me time". The phone is a useful tool to be used when appropriate. We need to take charge of it and of our well being.

  25. NickA, that photo - along with many you'll see on this site - came from Picture The Past. http://www.picturethepast.org.uk/frontend.php If you put "Wheeler Gate" in their Search box, you'll get around 90 results, including the one above. And if you're really bothered, you can get prints from them.

  28. There's still a few, Catfan, but they are very much in decline. I don't know how long I will live, but at seventy its a statistical certainty that it will probably not be an awful lot longer. The more I look at this world the less I am desparate to stay here. What I fail to understand is that our generation did not bring up our kids to act like little barbarians and yet often our kids do not seem to follow our example. I know I'm starting to sound like a miserable old #%¥? But I'm really not. I just don't understand the situation.

  29. Fortunately some kids still have good upbringing. Having a meal & a few pints in the Lime Kiln on Sunday & a family arrived at the next table to us. Mum & Dad with 3 young kids, they behaved impeccably & were an absolute credit to their parents. Not the usual mouth breathing inbreds who frequent Wetherspoons these days.

  39. How anyone can compare 19th century traffic conditions, horse drawn or not, to the 21st century is beyond me. For one thing the population was nowhere as dense as today. Fortunate pensioners ? Me & Mrs Catfan woked hard to contribute to private pensions for many years.

  40. I nearly placed a post, spent 5 minutes writing it, then read what I wrote, can't use that kind of bad temper and aggravation on you nice people. I'll leave it at this, I will do my best in never being seen riding on one of these ugly, over engineered, unwelcome things. If the local folk of High Rd Beeston decide to block the tram road on opening day I will be there with them.
