  1. This was taken when I was 4. I was on my own while mam went to a neighbours for a cuppa, and the photographer came to the door and asked to take my photo. When I told mam about it when she came home, she went spare. Not because a stranger had come to the door, but because she didn't have the chance to clean me up, change my clothes etc. Oh the good old days, when you were safe to be left on your own and talk to strange men!

  2. This time mam knew the photographer was coming, and she was able to 'tart' me up! Curled my hair, ribbon in, and party frock. The frock was lemon, and the bolero was white with lemon trim. I wore that outfit for all the parties on the street, for ages. I was about 9 on this photo.

  3. I was in town today and still the Watson fothergill offices remain untouched this iconic building is being left to deteriorate a clear example of the council neglect One of the great examples of great architecture should be celebrated by this city We have some prime examples of his work here in Nottingham and they should not be allowed to go into ruin The successive councils over the years have shown that their knowledge of architecture leaves much to be desired This repair project looks like rivalling the time it took to build the pyramids meeowed

  7. Too right, meeowed! Nottingham has been ruined architecturally. Modern architects? It seems to me that you can't study the subject today unless you're suffering from rampant astigmatism. Everywhere is stuffed with charmless carbuncles that look as though they've just staggered out of some back street pub and are about to keel over sideways. It's vandalism and should be stopped!

  8. Haha, Quite unintentional Rog. I just seem to have drifted into it. Mind you I do spend a lot of time watching the goings on up there on the ledge. I always look at the live Falcon site as well, as a weather watch, I know at first hand what the weather is doing in Nottm. To be honest I didn't realise the falcons are on another site as well, Notts tv you say. I must have a look to see if I am missing anything! I hope I am not overloading everyone with Falcon coverage. mama carni signing off, Like it!

  9. After the second fire and subsequent demolition, you can now see through to the Arboretum area - first time for probably over 100 years. The church spire is All Saints, and the smaller square tower to the right is the High School.

  10. #563 How about Ben, as the token male. Wearing his liberty bodice, of course! #569 I don't know who took that photo of Chulla but he looks rather two dimensional, as though he had a flat head. Could it be that Mrs Chulla caught him ogling his calendar girls?

  12. Margie #558 I have always been impressed by what they did, in the case of George Chilvers not sure if it was a plan or circumstances dictated his action. His future wife gave birth to a daughter in 1871, the weekly wage for a labourer in Norfolk was 8s 0d, in the north it was 14s 0d. Both good reasons to move on. GG.George left Norfolk for Leeds in 1871 married a girl from his home village 1872 his occupation was labourer. He left Leeds for Nottingham 1882 occupation Maltster. He left Nottingham for Sawbridgeworth Essex 1887 occupation Maltster's Manager, employing M

  13. I didn't know the area back then, but anything would have looked better than the council office monstrosity which was built in the early 70s. One bit of old Carlton in that film has survived; not demolished but also not redeveloped.

  14. Sometime during the night Egg No3 was laid, all appeared to be OK when I had a look but no chance for a pic; just setting up to take one when the Perigrine flew back in and laid straight back on them. She must have been out for breakfast. I haven't spotted the Tercel at all while I have been watching. Perhaps he will be around when the brooding starts. In the few days before the first egg was born, I did witness some kind of stand off between the new male (that was hanging around last year) and the female, it definitely was some kind of argument. It appeared that the female had won

  17. Hi All, The item on the One Show concentrated on the 'human interest' aspect of my discovery of the posters and my father's story. I would have liked them to show more about the posters and the printers and the printing process. For a more balanced piece, google That's Solent TV, look under videos on their Youtube page and scroll down. You can also find it if you google Goff Gleadle. I have learned more and am still learning. Stafford's was possibly the largest poster printer in England at the time and was responsible for 50% of cinema posters printed in England between the 1920's and 60'

  18. Yesterday one of our regional airlines Regional Express (REX) SAAB 340 was en-route between Albury and Sydney some 550 km when on descent into Sydney the pilots made a PAN call indicating urgency but not a mayday. The flight deck radioed ATC "The prop has just fallen off the aircraft and standby for further instructions," the flight deck coolly reports to air traffic controllers. "REX768 we've just had uncommanded engine operations and our propeller has just sheared off," a man on the flight deck told controllers. "We've got normal controls, still be able to f
