Chulla made many contributions to Nottstalgia, but perhaps his greatest was to bring order and sense to organising meet-ups. In the pre-Chulla days, meet-ups took weeks to organise - if they could be arranged at all - because nobody could ever agree on dates and locations - everybody wanted something changing. Chulla took hold of the subject by the scruff of the neck and devised the system of fixed dates and places. From that time forward it was a case of “this is the time and place; be there or miss it”. And from then on, all meet-ups went according to plan and were a10 points

I have already given my condolences to Dave's family but I will add that I'm glad I made the effort to attend the meeting in January when I visited Nottingham. I spent most of the day with Dave and Linda and as usual Dave was very talkative about so many things. He was an avid follower of ancestry and gave me quite a few tips when I was stuck over something. Like most I agree he will be sadly missed.6 points

The saddest news we've had here for a very long time. Massive condolences to everyone concerned. Chulla was great contributor to this site, a wonderful person, and he will be greatly missed.6 points

Well I got the wheel chair and went round to the owd fellas house to take him out in the fresh air,got him wrapped up nice and warm and covered him with a blanket to make sure he didn't get a chill,he's not been out since breaking his leg about three/four weeks ago,got him settled in the wheel chair and took off down the cycle/footpath to Bassingham,I found out that they don't have a coffee morning on Fridays so carried on to the shop and got him a can of ginger beer, didn't want to get real beer or that could have caused real problems pushing him back home if he was plastered, anyway we sat an5 points

All part of the process of brainwashing the public in to accepting homosexuality as normal behaviour, the same as Lloyds bank showing a big poster of 2 men ? hugging with the caption "He said yes". Sickening the lot of it.5 points

I’ve just heard from Chulla’s wife, Linda, and she asked me to let you all know that he really valued your friendship. She will let us know the funeral arrangements ‘if anyone wants to attend’. I’ve told her that he had many friends on Nottstalgia and quite a number will want to say farewell to a lovely man.4 points

Our dear friend, the one and only Dalai Chulla. Such a character. He'll leave a hole in this site that no one will ever fill. Condolences to his wife and family, all in my thoughts, as in everyone's. Bless you, Chulla. X4 points

Best laugh I've had all day NBL. Sorry you got wet though. Edited to add. A funny related memory. I was once rewiring an old house in Calgary. A couple of plumbers were working down in the basement. I needed a little relief so used the upstairs commode. As I flushed I heard a loud angry shout from the basement. Well they didn't tell me they had cut the four inch sewer pipe off just under the upstairs floor. They came upstairs looking for blood. I thought they were gonna kill me. Anyway I begged for mercy and explained that it was only a pee. Finally they beli3 points

I've been out all day and only just read this sad news. I always enjoyed the conversations I had with Chulla, and although we disagreed on some things, we never ever fell out about it. He was obviously a 'thinker' and his poems had a depth that showed this. I feel privileged to have known him, and both Paul and I send our condolences to Kath, Linda and Barbara.2 points

A tragedy to his loved ones and for nottstalgia. A lovely man with wide interests and a benevolent outlook. He became our defacto leader for the meet ups and will be a hard act to follow. Sad day. Best wishes Kayjay and family.2 points

We are so sorry to read this news Katyjay. Both Chris and I thought a lot of Chulla, as I am sure, so many other Nottstalgians felt the same.. He bought a lot of enjoyment into our lives, with his humour, poetry and knowledge on many things. It has been a pleasure to have met him and Linda. Our condolences to Linda and Barbara, and yourself Katyjay.2 points

Kath, that is such terrible news. He’s been through so much in recent months with different medical issues but fought it all bravely and usually with humour. I personally will remember Chulla as a very kind, friendly and caring man, and one of the nicest men I’ve ever met. We will all miss him so much, he really got us organised for meet-ups too, bless him. Thoughts are with Linda and his daughter Barbara, and of course you Kath. Sending my sincere condolences and love to the family.2 points

Thanks Ian. Had the electrodes off this morning, now I'm full of red marks. I must be allergic to the sticky stuff. Have an ecocardiagram TT on monday. No results yet theyre going to phone me. I'm hoping its only stress, as I've had my fill lately. But my babies keep me sane ( my pups)2 points

Hey, +Carni & +DavidW Firstly, sorry for not being around for a bit, work takes me up & down the country at the minute. Secondly, wow.. thanks for having the kindness to have a dig around the records, it's very much appreciated and gives me something to look into. There's a big possibility that I drive past relations in Carlton every time I go through. I know my mum had researched some of her tree, but I, sadly, don't have access to any of that research. I'll note these possibilities down and have a root around at some point, when I have some spare time. If only the2 points

Roger, my Dad is Clive Johnson. He was the depot chairman for the TGWU at Trent Bridge from when it re-opened in 1973 until the end of 1975, when he was elected as TGWU branch secretary (5/92 branch) and moved to Parliament Street to work alongside Harry Ball. Dad left NCT in December 1976 to take a full time role with the TGWU in their Burton on Trent office.1 point

I am so sorry for your loss Katy, my condolences are sent to you and all the family and I will hold you in my prayers. It was such a shock to see this on opening the Forum site, we knew he had been struggling bravely with his condition for some time but didn't expect to read this news. He was a great contributor to the Forum with a fund of knowledge on so many topics and his admin skills in controlling members for meet ups were formidable! We will all miss him and I am so glad that I was able to get to the meet last October and shake his hand. Graham.1 point

Hi KJ. I'm truly sorry to hear this news. I always liked and respected Dave. Even on the odd occasions when we disagreed it was always good natured. We shared a liking of music and his poetry was always a good read. Not too mention all of the beautiful pictures he posted from time to time. He is truly a great loss to Nottstalgia and will be really missed. My sincere condolences to all of his family and friends. Dave. LL.1 point

I'm very lucky to live in one of the places that has just made the best places to live list in the Times newspaper. Fiskerton cum Morton (also known as Morton cum Fiskerton) are two villages that more or less merge into each other, about 2 miles outside Southwell. The Bromley Arms Fiskerton occupies a lovely spot on the banks of the Trent and to sit by the river on a summer evening enjoying a pint is bliss. There is also the delightful Full Moon pub in Morton. The place has come to prominence recently as the broad band in the area was terrible but due to a self funded diy effort by locals now1 point

The old "Acropolis" is at present being renovated from a god awful chippy & pizza takeaway to something called "Zinger Munch" whatever that establishment might be. In it's day the Acropolis was the best kebab house in Bulwell, I bought my first ever donor kebab there back in the '70s. After a few beers in the 360 club we went in there & was intrigued to know what a kebab was. It was at the time I thought beautiful, never quite understood what the actual ingredients were ! Just checked & is a fast food chicken & pizza with halal, in that case I will steer c1 point

No problem Carni . The Widdowson name came up in connection to the Comery name you were researching . It may jog someone's memory ? More here from previous thread : https://nottstalgia.com/forums/topic/11422-good-old-notts-names/?tab=comments#comment-1848871 point
