  1. Things you don’t see anymore (times 2) A 1945 photo of my aunt, wearing a turban and scrubbing her front door step on Queens Grove, Meadows. She dug her heels in and refused to move when the council re-housed the street’s residents, I believe she was the last person to move out of the Grove

  3. It’s my other day really, but I’ve been busy! After reading the NEP article about Long Stairs that Catfan posted in the “Then and Now” thread, I got in touch with Janine Tanner who led the team that cleared up the steps. As she doesn’t have a website, I signed up for a Facebook account (at my age!) so I could keep up with future projects, that the group might get involved in (“Notts History – Honour our Heritage” if anyone’s interested). She also has another group called “Nottingham’s Railways Remembered” so I signed up for that an all! I’ll soon have thousands of “friends”! Their “head

  4. I had to laugh catfan, I saw your post just after I finished Chris's monthly hair cut, ear and eyebrow pampering. He looks so sweet now, posing in front of the mirror with pursed lips. How ever that man trusts me near his ear holes with a pair of very pointy scissors, I'll never know. Must be love.

  5. Good morning everyone. My day started well !!!! The carer arrived for mum and she wouldn't wake up. She kept pulling the covers over her and closing her eyes again. At the finish I had to tell her that if she didn't wake up properly I would send Lucia home and she would have to stay dirty until tomorrow morning . ( Lucia only comes in for an hour on sunday as a favour) So left her to think about it. Breakfast crunchy nut cornflakes was served to her but she left them too long so they were soggy and wouldn't eat them. Gave her some more but she was very very angry. Told Lucia not to worry

  7. One of the problems with NWBW is its almost too popular . Everyone piles in with comments but rarely read the previous messages . To get any "likes" for a message is a rarity . Having said that , had one surprise on the recent Gedling school thread on there , when the son of the family that bought the house I was born at Mapperley replied . They moved in when my parents sold it in 1966 and it was great to see some later photos . Another problem is you can't start a thread on NWBW , only by PMing the admins who may or may not reply. You can however add pics to the thread they've star

  9. Just look at you AfferGorritt, you’ll be logging onto Facebook all day long now, in case you miss something. Apparently Facebook is more for ‘our’ age group now, all the youngsters use something else, but I’ve not figured out what yet. A few of us lot are on NWBW too. It’s good and brings back lots of memories but the problem is that if you make a comment you get notified of everybody else’s comments on that photo, drives me mad. Enjoy your new hobby!

  10. Only just spotted this. The short answer is that there is no single 'ideal' weight. All cartridges and styli come with a recommended 'tracking weight', or 'stylus downforce'. It is recommended by the manufacturer and is I think partly related to the 'compliance' ( the stiffness or otherwise of the stylus suspension) of the cartridge and maybe also the stylus 'profile'. ( Some are conical, some elliptical and some just plain strange...) A properly set up stylus/tonearm combination should track a decent record without issue. On the old Dansettes and similar, this was all factory set an

  15. Everyone who was interested in my posts and made comments on Ben, he went last week to start on the hard work that makes a guide dog. The training we had given him was passed as excellent so he was ready to go, its hard to let him go when you have had him for 14months and he has been with you all the time. Miss him for many reasons.

Will be sadly missed. Please will someone inform me of funeral arrangements as I'd like to pay my respects.

  29. What a lovely area Gem . I must start walking again. All the grape vines are starting to sprout so its interesting to see how they progress every day. There are plenty of nice walks around us but to start they are all uphill. We live in a valley but we are high up. Sounds daft I know but the village is split in two. The old part and new. We are in the old part mostly old farmhouses. Lovely and quiet though except in the summer for the vendemmia when its tracters , tracters and more tracters carrying grapes. Hope you enjoyed your walk.

  32. Great shot of the viaduct Ian. Must have been taken after 2003 as it was then it got its spring clean and restoration. Completed in 1827, with fifteen arches made of local stone at a height of 60 feet above street level. Just at the top of the photo you can see the ring road which together with the Four Seasons shopping centre (which can be seen in the lower right of the photo) the council barbarians destroyed so much of historic Mansfield. Just below the centre of the photo is the gothic Bentinck Memorial in the centre of the Market Place There were several good bike shops

  37. LizzeM thanks I knew I was old, I used to go round all the stations regularly and knew most of them, after I retired I never went on a station for about 7 years, I then went on one where I served for 10 years and I didn't know a soul and they all looked young boys. When central closed all people who had served there where invited for a final photo, the only ones I knew were retired, they felt the same way. When all the retired ones had had a group photo taken all serving members were asked to join in the photo, some bright spark shouted out come on children on here with us.

  38. We had one in our back garden on Hazel Grove, Mapperley. It was full of rubble in my time (70's & 80's) and inaccessible. It was all below surface, and had brick steps down, a flat concrete top, with a slightly raised section/lid which you could just about slide off. I think you'd have been able to stand up under the lid section.

  39. Memories..I too started with a Garelli Monaco scooter, then a BSA A7, eventually buying a new Norton Commando. I used too hang out at the Hart, I rode a 250cc NSU at the time-tearing up the Boulevard. I am still a keen biker at 71, regular in Matlock on my Kawasaki ZZR1400 and also ride my 1990 ZZR1100 (recently restored). We had a bike club in the 60s based at the Ashley Methodist youth club called the 77.

  40. I wouldn't add any additional weight to a pickup arm beyond what the cartridge maker recommends. If the weight is accurately set I would be looking for other causes of groove jumping. Tightness in arm bearings, or even just a defective disk. Question would be, is. It just jumping on this one disk or on most of the disks I play? Even check the turntable with a spirit level to make sure everything is even. Some arms also have adjustment for lateral tension. I forget the proper name for it. Might also check if the deck is well isolated from feedback vibrations from the speaker s
