  4. I was very impressed with the Nottstalgian members at Chulla’s special extraordinary meet-up yesterday on a sun-drenched hill overlooking Nottingham. So many in smart black suits and I’m sure Ben was delighted to see all the men wearing ties too.

  5. Mary 1947, tucking your skirt in your knickers bought back some memories. Back in the late 70s our sergeants mess and their ladies were invited to a formal dinner (full mess kit and long dresses only) in Swindon. On returning to our hotel we found the bar still open for the staff an opportunity not to be missed. Anyway while I was playing 'liar dice' an adult version of snobs the wife got into discussion about doing cartwheels when she was younger and was told "bet you couldn't still do one now." Damn me the first I knew about it was when I saw her, long dress tucked in

Been asked to what many would deem to be a mundane and boring job tonight,,looking after a car park,,it will be far from that........100 spaces for usually 200 cars........and one entrance/exit,,......bound to be insulted and verbally abused......however i will be doing my 'New York Cop' impression......Dancing with a whistle.....looking forward to it..........lol

  8. I've got a sore nose. And no.. it snot from sticking it in other folk's business.. I ordered some new specs a couple of weeks ago. Decided to go to Boots, St Helens, after a disappointing experience with Specsavers a year or so back. The optician was excellent and she understood when I said I didn't want to go from my old specs to full new prescription on one jump. That's what spoiled things with Specsavers. I ordered new frames and lenses with all the bells and whistles, .. varifocals, thinned lenses, fancy coatings and 'Transitions' ( like 'Reactolit

  9. What a wonderful send-off for a really lovely man. During that service we Nottstalgians learnt so much about our mate Chulla. We knew he was an incredibly bright and warm man but I doubt any of us realised just how intelligent the man was. Apart from his posts about old films, music, poetry I had no idea he was an author with many published articles in ‘Air Britain’. I think his friend and colleague Dave Piggott said he’d had 94 publications which is brilliant. Plus he was an international authority on aviation. We will miss Chulla so much, especially those of us who became close to

  10. A funny sort of day, still thinking about Chulla and what an impression he made on us Nottstalgians who got to know him. However we’ve rounded the day off at the cosy La Capanna Italian Restaurant in Sherwood in the company of Katyjay, Ian Dawson and Hippogirl (who sadly wasn’t able to join us at Wilford Hill to say goodbye to the Nottstalgia Social Secretary). Katyjay brought along a book that Chulla wrote about Rolls Royce. I’m buying a copy of that, even though I haven’t got a clue what it’s all about! We enjoyed a lovely meal, wine and a bottle of champagne to toast our dear departed

Very warm in Nottm yesterday.. my car was showing a good 25 degrees, but back home on the forbidding windswept flanks of the Billinge Massif, it was down to about 20 degrees with a stiff breeze coming off Liverpool Bay. We also had the dreaded 'Five o'Clock Cloud'. It seems to develop high over the nearby Welsh mountains and often manages to be the only cloud in the sky, but sitting directly over the Sun and following it as it sets

  15. I wasn’t able to be at Wilford Hill, but Chulla clearly got a suitable send-off. It’s appropriate a large number of Nottstalgians were there. Chulla was the main man for getting a lot of people together in the same place at the same time on a large number of occasions. Nottstalgians who have met other Nottstalgians probably owe that to Chulla. He will be a hard act to follow.

  16. Thank you, to everyone that attended Chulla's service today. It was grand to see so many Nottstalgians, I think I met you all, except Radfordred. Wished you had introduced yourself. Lovely wake afterwards, and couldn't have wished for a nicer day.

  17. Here's picture of my ORIGINAL snobs, which I bought about 64 years ago when I started secondary school. There are a few spares there, too, and some jacks - the little red ball seems to be missing, though i have tried to teach two of our grandchildren how to play snobs, but they aren't very keen as I'm better than they are!

  19. Just got back from Ted’s talk on Francis Lovel at Gedling Church. Much of the story is as I put down in the article I put on OneDrive, but Ted’s now added a few more pieces to the puzzle. His further research touches ... The escape route from the battlefield at East Stoke and the significance of the position of the old Nottingham-Newark road. If the tomb isn’t Lovel’s, whose is it? All other rebel knights are accounted for. Knights of Henry’s army would surely not have been buried miles in the opposite direction to his army’s advance. Lords of the manor, and

  23. You're right of course Commo, but I think what's worn many down this time is that Summer turned straight into Autumn pretty much in one go last August and there has been little relief since. We don't expect this sort of weather all year, but there should really be a steady improvement from Feb on, which just hasn't happened this year. Farmers are reporting flooded land and cold soil they can't plant on, shortages of fodder because the grass hasn't started growing yet, etc. Col

  28. He spent a lot of his working life in Nottingham, so he almost counts as being local. I first became aware of him in the mid-late 70s when he was on Radio Trent doing a soul music show. He often co-presented with Kevin Thomas who ran Arcade Records when they were still in West End Arcade. And Supermarket Sweep was made by Central TV at Lenton Lane, so he was back in Nottingham for most of the 90s.

  31. For many years there was a wrecked barge virtually under the Halfpenny bridge - its cargo was sand. There was a ford across the Trent close to Clifton Grove and even today you can walk/wade about halfway depending on the river level. Only the smallest of boats can get past and go as far as far as Beeston weir.

  33. Continuing the Minutiae.. I'm really no longer sure about dates on this stuff.. late 50s/early 60s is the best I can do.. Sometime around 1959/60, I went to a single meeting of the 'Cubs' at 'Blackwoods' on Hucknall Rd. I was taken there by another lad out of Southglade Road . Bestwood. I felt like an outcast all the time I was there, though I did fall in love with that little bit of heathland .. trapped, alongside a main road and between houses. As far as I know it is still pretty much the same, and long may it remain so.. But, that wasn't going to be

  35. We used to jump off Clifton Bridge in the early 50's. The water was almost black. It was also much deeper then and large barges would come by quite often. I always assumed that the barges carried coal but could have been any bulk item. The wash made by the barges eroded the banks quite badly. I remember sitting on my fishing basket seat at Farndon when the whole bank gave way, just sort of slid down into the Trent. Got away with a scare and wet feet.

  36. Well said all, I can't really add anything new to all of those lovely comments. It was an excellent 'standing room only' send off for our Chulla, which in itself was a good measure of the man. Lizzie, I had a few long conversations with Dave and whilst I was aware of his interests, I too had no clear idea of his standing in the world of aviation research etc., so I think I'd add 'modest' to his many other traits. Obviously not the best circumstances, but it was also a pleasure to see so many 'Stalgians. Some familiar, others new to me. I too am sorry to have missed W

  37. When we were boys in the late 40s we had lots of great adventures. We could go anywhere without fear. One of our best adventures was to walk (yes we walked in those days) from the Wollaton Park Estate along the Derby Road and then up Triumph Road, which had open land opposite the tea warehouse, across the rough land until we reached the River Leen. Just about there the river ran under the main line railway. There was a concrete pontoon in the middle of the stream which we would stand on and reach forward to place pennies or half pennies on the railway line and wait for the trains to go ov

All I can say is I feel so sad but also so glad to have got to know Chulla for the short time we had. Seeing everyone today showed how much we all thought of him in our own way. It appears he had such a knack of being natural, comical and caring and he endeared himself to us all. Chris and I already miss him on NS and think we always will. The service today was very appropriate to how Chulla shared his beliefs with us. Thank you to Linda and Barbara

Germans. Two up and scoop the remaining snobs two at a time Frenchies not sure of Overhands, the snobs thrown up have to be caught overhand etc..

  47. This belongs in the joke thread really, but it's very appropriate for this subject! The Psychiatrist and the Proctologist Best friends graduated from medical school at the same time and decided that, despite two different specialties, they would open a practice together to share office space and personnel. Dr. Smith was the psychiatrist and Dr. Jones was the proctologist. They put up a sign reading: "Dr. Smith and Dr. Jones: Hysterias and Posteriors." The town council was livid and insisted they change it. So, the docs changed it to read: "Schizoids and Hemorrhoids." This wa

I can't remember the last time I went to Bulwell, it was so long ago. Also, how do you get away with calling it 'Scum City' it can't be that bad, surely.
