  1. I looked at the chulla Member offline tag today with great concern. Unfortunately my fears were confirmed. I did not know until today. Never knew his real name. The shock of learning about his death truly touched me. I always bottled out of meetings because I am innately shy, but I wish I had met him. I feel he would have made me welcome. I was often in Nottingham at the time of a meet but couldn't summon up the courage. Now an great opportunity has been missed. He always seemed to me to have a very incisive mind, and he knew what he was talking about too. Decent men a

  3. Thankyou all for your lovely words of comfort. I know its the right thing to do. One of the nurses that came to see mum as soon as she came out of hospital told me my duty was to myself and family, shes had her life and I dont have to neglect her but my health comes before her. I thought at the time that they were harsh words, but I havpe gradually come to realise the words from everyone are the correct ones. It was a very difficult decision. I changed my mind dozens of times thinking it wasn't a way to spend the rest of her life. I love her but shes not an easy person . She'd spoilt every si

  4. We drink warm beer because it is beer and not weasel p**** (3 esses) Late last year on my way back home, I stopped off in London for a couple of days and met with some old mates and obviously we went, to what I thought was a regular pub, for a pint. There were about 10 choices of beer on draught only one of which could be described as anyway near bitter. The rest were all sorts of “ales” and foreign muck. A conversation ensued and I was told that the most popular beer in the UK is Budweiser. Now I have drunk my, and probably several other people’s, share of Bud over the years but not in t

  10. On my holidays in the 60's and 70's at Portsmouth and Sunny Southsea the only buses I remember seeing of Portsmouth City Council were Leyland PD2's. Even the two open top ones that ran the sea front service were Leylands. They were pre-war reg RV **** one of which is preserved.

  14. When people ask me where I’m from (for some reason many people ask if I Australian) and I reply Nottingham I include “you know Robin Hood and all that”. There was time when I didn’t need to do that because everybody know about “Oh Brian Clough and Forest”. Now I have to explain all this and talk about Man U being 2nd Division trash, Tommy Docherty etc. But even prior to Clough, Forest were OK, not brilliant but OK. After the 1959 FA Cup win (still only team to win it with 10 men) they were a good 1st Div team.

  16. That's the place I was referring to; we've each described it from opposite sides. This is the place - and the pitch - with the "old" stand marked on the left. For reference, the arrow at the top is the railway bridge at Northern Baths. Note also the coal train going north.

  17. I didn't realise that whole bikes were made under the Villiers badge. They were mostly known for producing small two stroke engines which were used by other manufacturers, including those wanting engines for other things such as mowers etc. The bike in the pic has a name on rthe tank but it's very difficult to read. If I had to guess I'd go Greeves. Something like this... but I'm not putting any money on it. Most Greeves, Cotton and Dot machines in my youth were sold for Trials or Scrambles. 21. Love the bit where Brian is trying to tell the crowd he is not the Messiah and they keep repeating everything he says ... Brian: ”You are all individuals!” Crowd: ”We are all individuals” Michael Palin: “I’m not!” Clever!

  27. Nonna you are doing the right thing for your mother, you admit due to your health problems you cannot give her all the care that she needs, so to ensure she receives the standard of care she requires as a loving daughter you are arranging the best possible alternative. You should be proud of the loving care you are providing. Then you must spend time on looking after yourself as you also have a wider family to look after.

  28. Nonna, don't beat yourself up about the decision you've made about your Mum. You've done all that you possibly could, starting with bringing her from Scotland to your home, which I know was difficult in itself. Hopefully she'll settle into the Care Home quickly. You can't say you haven't tried ......

  29. Nothing wrong with Aspleh except Strelly’s one end and Radford the other. Another time I ran out of money my Dad got me a job as a laborer on the new Bluecoat School on the corner of Western Boulevard and Aspley Lane. At first I was breaking up hard core for the base of the gym - that was hard work! After a while I got promoted to canteen manager which meant making tea from peoples mashings in a copper boiler and running errands for the blokes - dead cushy, wages plus tips, free fags and invited to the pub on thursday night.

  32. Permit me KJ. The following was spoken by Dave Piggott at Dave Birch's funeral... DAVID BIRCH 1939 – 2018 David Birch was an aviation historian, “ par excellence “. Dave was a founder member of the Rolls-Royce Heritage Trust back in 1981 and he played an important and significant role in the activities of the Derby & Hucknall Branch throughout this time, being a member of our Executive Committee until very recently. Dave did not only work through the Trust, but was involved with many other aviation based organisations. For example he was a member and author for A

  33. I have tried to copy and paste Trogg's email to me, re: Hucknall Dispatch, but it was sent in a pdf and I can't seem to copy and paste and you open it, so I found the speech Dave Piggott gave at Dave's funeral, and I reckon the article is just about word for word, except there is a photo in the newspaper article. Scroll down to the 4th email on the page I'm sending. http://www.enginehistory.org/phpbb/viewtopic.php?p=2955&sid=3d665eb974332b0c4f1588c750e0201f
