With ref to Mary 1947's trolley bus picture it would appear that the number 5 was the first trolleybus into service in 1927. First horse-drawn tram ran in Nottingham from 1877 to April 3rd, 1902. Electric trams were run from January lst, 1901, to September sth, 1936. First trolleybus was run on April 10th, 1927 .(Number 5 from King Street to Vernon Rd ).2 points

I lived in Bilborough from when I was born, until about 1982/3. Do you mean he was aged in his 50's or 60's at the time, or would he be that age now?. If you mean he'd be that age now, then he's a similar age to me (well, the early 60's bit!). I don't remember an Arthur around my age but a lot of people lived in Bilborough - depends which part he lived in On a quick search of the macearchive website, I found this, but it was in Derby http://www.macearchive.org/films/atv-today-21081981-sex-shop You can contact them to ask how to view it, if you think this could be t1 point

Too many parents sit their kids in front of a TV with a XBox then leave em to it. Kids being fed a constant diet of diet of carnage of all description are easily brain washed. I've lost count the number of times I've heard mothers trying to bribe their kids with, "if you don't behave you won't go to MacDc, KFC,Spoons" etc. etc. It all begins at home. I read somewhere the other day where the police had to be called (999) because an eleven year old girl kicked off big style when her mother wouldn't let her staup up late to watch Love Island on TV. I kid you not.1 point

I see that addiction to video games is now being treated as mental illness. What the hell are we doing to the younger generation? There is no wonder that violence is on the increase when you see the content of these games advertised. Most of it is pure violence and is influencing young minds to the point where they can't tell fact from fiction. When things go pear shaped the cry goes up that they have got one syndrome or another. No wonder if this is the tripe they are watching. It needs curtailing before it causes irreparable damage to society.1 point

No, I can't imagine the modern world without computers. My gripe is that they are our servants, not our masters and they should do as they are told and when they are wrong (as in the instance of the spill chucker here) they should heed and remember that. Turning the thing off is not really the answer. The spell checker is, I must admit, far more useful than not, it's just these niggly little things that get my goat.1 point

Could you seriously imagine life without computers ? Banking, shopping, e-commerce, traffic control. ATC in fact the list is endless. If you are having those problems when typing then turn your spell checker off !1 point

Same here re electric carving knives. Too much effort. funny thing is they were usually given as wedding presents for some reason !1 point

Computers should not be allowed to take over the world and the writers of spill chuckers should ensure that what they are defining as correct actually is correct. My moniker on here, and some other places is jonab - this is invariably classed as wrong by my machine(s), no matter how much I tell them they are wrong. Even now, I am being badgered to correct my pseudonym to 'job' - sometimes it's Jonah or John (my actual name) or almost any or all combinations of the five letters that make up jonab. Grrrrrr!1 point

I can remember starting work back in the sixties with a canvas gas mask holder haversack as a bag to take my snap to work. It was just right for a Tupperware sandwich box and a Thermos flask. Purchased of course from Wakefield's Army Stores in Mansfield. There was also a store called Yeoman's that sold similar stuff.1 point

Ian. The photo was a bit after my time. I left Peveril St in 1955. To see a car parked was a rarety. No trolley bus lines so must have been in the 60's/70's. The people crossing the road were facing my Aunt Min's green grocery shop.Looks like Beals hosiery factory was still there. My late friend Eric Biddulph worked at the Midland bank at the top of Peveril St 1960/65. His book 'The First Seventy Years' published in 2007 has a lot of every day 'Nottingham' in it's content and I will bring it to the next meet up for you to pour over.1 point

Gotya - too early for me You are right some owners were terrible, including some that should have known better. There was a huge loss of ships and their crews in the late 80’s and 90’s due to corrosion, particularly in tanker ballast tanks and on bulk carriers but not too much was done or heard about it. Its a awful thing to say but as the crews were mainly Philippino they apparently didn’t count as much. New regulations came out in the late 90’s and given all the stuff surrounding the Alaska Pipeline, Texas City and the Deepwater Horizon I believe things have improved.1 point
