  1. It's not often I put personal stuff on here so here goes, a few years ago I found a woman daft enough who would marry me , some of you have met Margaret at some of the meet ups and yesterday was the day we tied the knot. We were married at Arnold Hill park (registry office) and had a brilliant reception at Papplewick Village hall. The day went very well and I would like to thank all of those that sent me personal messages of congratulations. Dennis.

  2. 8pm this evening on BBC4, is a documentary entitled 'The Cruel Sea. The Penlee Lifeboat Disaster'. If anything portrays the bravery and dedication of lifeboat crews , then this event is it. There were no survivors from the Solomon Browne lifeboat, or the Union Star freighter. Such a sad occurrence, but the following morning, there was a queue of volunteers to man a new lifeboat. The absolute bravest of the brave, and I'm always moved to tears whenever I pass through the Cornish village of Moushole. God rest their souls .

  3. When our estate was createded from new in 1955 a row of shops was situated at the bottom of our road. The fruthest shop to the right of the bolck was a grocer's shop run by a Mr Williams. Over fifty year s later, when my mother was becoming senile, she was found walking to Mr Williams' shop one evening in her dressing gown, clutching a twenty pund note....going for the groceries for the family.

  4. Col, wouldn't it be easier to employ a general handyman/Jack of all trades instead of doing it yourself?

  5. I was born in Barrow in Furness so spent my first few years learning how to appreciate seafood. My grandfather used to go crabbing, winkling and treading for cockles. The crabs he would put into a sack and when he brought them back home he would tip them all out on the kitchen floor. Mum said they then had to run around catching them. My trips with Nana would never end in giving me sweets it was always shrimps and to this day I love them but have now progressed to king prawns. Oh what I would give to go back to those days on Walney beach looking in rock pools and watching for the tid

  7. Great day today. Our garden along with another 17 was open to the public. It's the first time we have done this. Very hard work but quite fulfilling - meeting loads of people and neighbours. Our garden is average size but enjoys a pretty courtyard entrance complete with ancient well. Trouble is that some of the garden has been neglected due to our extensive periods away. To make the garden interesting to visitors I set up the cider making equipment , exhibiting the process from apple to cider, finished in bottles and oak barrels. Went down a treat. The stationary engine aquired from plantfit

  16. Your Certificate of Excellence is very well deserved too Nonna, can vouch for the excellent menu and wine list, having made the trip to see you during a cold and snowy February 2016. I’d recommend your restaurant to everyone. Not that far for you Jonab, just turn left off the A8 !!

  17. Phil I dont think so. Alex cheffed for Deborah when we came back here and she opened her restaurant, he was quite happy just doing his hours and leaving the rest to them. When James opened 3 years ago he said he would help him to get on his feet " but only 1 year" He doesn't understand the word retirement. He loves the work and although he is very tired he wont give in. He has found the work gives him a lot of satisfaction. The resaurant deals with a lot of tourists from all over the world. Usa, Hong Kong, all Europe, you can see on trip advisor where they come from. It made his day when i

  19. Does nobody eat mayonnaise? It contains uncooked eggs. - - - and for uncooked meat, what about Proscuitto Crudo, Jamon Serrano, all kinds of salami and similar things. Then there's oysters, smoked salmon, sushi and so on and so forth.

  21. I think to some extent this has changed now but when I was younger my Radford accent was slightly different to say a Bulwell accent. They seemed very territorial. My wife's uncle born 1900 lived and died in Hyson Green had a lovely accent. I can hear him now when enquiring, "aye up Uncle John, how are yo" his reply 'I'm all rete". I certainly noticed a marked difference in the mid 1970's when I went to live and work in Hucknall where there was a distinct difference. I still ask "what's foh snap" picked up from Hucknall. Could have been influenced by miners from Newcastle and other

  22. OK, my dinner last night was steak tartare Niçoise style - that is finely chopped (not minced or otherwise machine processed, it must be chopped by hand to get the right texture) good quality steak (filet, preferably) formed into a patty placed on a bed of salad leaves. A small depression is made on the steak patty, the egg is broken in half and the half-shell (with contents) placed on the steak. The dish is served with finely chopped shallots, cornichons (tiny gherkins), anchovies and (preferably) Niçoise olives. The idea is to mix your own combination of steak, egg, shallot, cornichon e

  23. Well I'm still trying to get this flippin' kitchen painted before the warm weather reaches us. I noticed we were the coolest place south of Scotland today.. at a mere 20c and with a keenish edge to the breeze. But, I was mostly indoors painting. It's not as if it's a big kitchen.. but rather than just 'hoik' everything out and do it in one big sesh.. I decided to do it in stages. So Thursday I did the ceiling and all areas above the cupboards. 3 coats onto new plaster., Carefully removing the ceiling spots without pulling the ceilng down..which is better than trying to paint round them e

  25. Been on a coach trip today to Sheringham with the church... had a great time with about 20 adults and 16 children. The oldest person on the trip was over 80 and the youngest was 8 months so quite a range, but we all got on well (as always). Some of the younger ones went swimming, also one of the adults (not me) I love just sitting there looking at the sea - the tide was coming in when we arrived so there was some sand for making sand castles but then the waves got very big as they hit the stony slope of the beach. We saw someone surfing nearby - the waves were certainly big enough for t

  29. Post Office building, image pinched from Ian’s Random Photos thread. I went on a college tour of the Sorting Office there when the Post Office were just bringing in post codes. Second photo is as it is now, Marco Island apartments, developed by a chap I know, he was a pupil at Gedling School so Carni, Sue48, BW and David W may have known him. They seem to be popular, rarely an apartment available (but I wouldn’t want to live there)
