  1. I definitely agree with that. Especially in terms of buildings and architecture, there’s a tendency to think “old is good, new is bad”, without apparently realising that everything which is now old was once new, and may not have originally been well received. For example, when the Council House was built, you can bet a few people moaned about it because it wasn't as good as the old Exchange which it replaced. When the Central Market was first built in the 1920s, people complained because it was too far out of the city centre, and they wanted to know why the market could

  2. At least the Council are addressing the issue, which can only be a good thing. As stated, much of the 'heritage assets' already have protection via various statutes. I can understand folk being upset when things change but the fact remains that change occurs for a reason, public needs alter and time moves on. Mary mentions the Black Boy, before my time so I can't comment, what was so special about it? The County Hotel I can remember, I went into the bar from time to time. It was a bar, nothing more. I don't miss it. Drury Hill, often mentioned as another Shambles. My recollection o

  3. Reading this thread has been interesting. Sad, but intereresting. I left in 1970, for many reasons that I won't bore you with now. I have been back several times for a holiday. Last time was 1997. I spent most of that time around Gedling, and exploring Netherfield. Even there I found some of the changes disturbing. The whole character was changed. I suppose that is one of the reasons I like it on NS. At least the character of so many folks here has not changed. I guess it proves the old saying though. You can never go back. Edited to add. I just re read TBI's post an

  4. I have to agree there is much that is changed in this city for the worse , but to not visit again is a mistake. Take a walk around the Lace market, the Park and the recreation parks . Even walk around the shopping areas not looking at the window displays look up and see the many fantastic buildings that are still there. There is more left in this great city of ours than has been destroyed , lets not condemn it to the dustbin of history.

  5. I left the city in the late 1970's in the midst of all of this destructive vandalism. I was VERY saddened about what was happening at that time both to the fabric of the city itself and to its citizens - I was living on Sherwood Rise and working at Gerard's, Wilkinson Street and very frequently had cause to go through Forest Fields and Hyson Green - twice daily, in fact. This was before the riots but, even then, there was a foreboding atmosphere of things to come. Courtesy of Google I have been able to see some of the destruction that has taken place since my time in the city and I really

Can't help with any living relatives but thought your S.H.Gething was probably a Sydney Horace Gething , born 1887 in Hucknall to a John and Eliza Gething . 1901 they are living 13 High Street Titchfield Tce Hucknall . In 1911 there's a marriage to an Ethel Ellen Lakin . Same year 1911 they are living at 7 Beauvale Rd , Nottm with Ethel's family with surnames of Lakin and Green. There's a possible daughter born Nottingham ,1911 called Ivy Florence Gething and a marriage for a lady with that name to Joseph E Rose in 1931 . Slight discrepancy in that this Cpl. Sy

  10. You’ve checked your bun I assume ?!! Years ago, when airport security had just become a massive issue, my husband was relieved of a Swiss Army knife that he’d kept in his briefcase for years, never used it but it had always travelled with him. He ALWAYS travels with just cabin luggage, even when he’s away for several weeks, and always takes a disposable razor in his washbag and it’s never been taken off him. I was flying to Italy with a friend some time ago and her favourite tweezers were confiscated. She nearly cried!

  11. Episode 2. We decided to barbeque. Although the chalet inventory said we had a full bottle of gas, I decided to check. Turned the knob and had a quick sniff to satisfy myself the gas was coming through, then we all went off to the shop. On returning I tried to light the bbq - no gas! Quietly seething I rang the number the rep had given us and complained vociferously. He was very apologetic and promised to come immediately - which chalet was I stayling in? He seemed a bit non-plussed when I told him P41 and asked me to hang on whilst he checked h

  13. It doesn’t matter how seasoned a traveller you are but when it comes to going through airport security there’s usually something that causes stress and slight panic. We were at East Midlands Airport the other morning at the unearthly time of 6am. We only had carry-on bags, put everything into the trays provided, having taken iPads, phones, liquids, belts and change out of pockets and bags. I went through the scanner thingy without being frisked but my husband was stopped and had to take his shoes off and then frisked. Meanwhile I retrieved the trays and bags off the end of the scanner and

  16. The Council House steps are always occupied by layabouts and dropouts Mary! A couple I know were married at the Council House on a Friday afternoon at the end of July. When they came out of the building they and their guests had to climb over bodies lolling about on the steps. Then of course they were faced with the bloomin’ fun fair and beach. Their fault for choosing that venue but the steps shouldn’t be a dossing place for all and sundry.

  17. Ah yes, doing stupid things in airports. I did a beaut last year. I use a black pack for all my travels. It has everything I need in it. I took it camping before we booked a flight to Pisa. I usually have a fair sized camping knife which is totally necessary. Necessary for camping, not to go to Italy with. Yep, I still had it in the bottom of my black bag when I went through security and found a surprising number of police around me. It took some explaining, but they accepted by story.

It must be very upsetting for you, nonna - you seem to have had quite a lot of trials in the last few months with other things not going well, too. It sounds as though you could do with a rest or a holiday, but you have the dogs and other commitments I'm sure, as well as your mum.... life must feel very unfair sometimes. I hope it helps a bit to 'get things off your chest' on here xx

  20. I can empathise with what you and your mum are going through, nonna. Nine years ago,my mum was in a similar predicament. Ripple mattresses are very effective for avoidance of pressure sores, as Margie says. However, no matter how much help and equipment is available, the loss of dignity and independence is heartbreaking.

  22. As well as the architectural losses in the city, there is also the loss of “real” shops. If you look around the city centre there’s a very narrow range of goods you can buy from the shops which are still operating. Look at photos of the city centre from the 1950s or earlier and you’ll see shops selling everything, including food, hardware, clothing, electrical goods, furniture etc. These days it's predominantly fast food takeaways, mobile phone shops, nail bars, coffee shops, travel agents and Poundstretcher. There’s now little point going into the city centre because

  23. Best forget about returning even for a short visit. You'd be extremely disappointed and annoyed at the difference. Things definitely weren't perfect fifty years ago, but these days the 'experts' have ruined the city. Then of course the population has changed for the worse too, and that also makes a vast difference to the surroundings.

  24. We’ve just had a few days in Spain, staying with friends in Sotogrande. Had a busy time eating and drinking and yesterday we went to Ardales to do the Caminito del Rey walk. It’s been on our bucket list for a long time and had to book the tickets back in June as it’s such a popular attraction. The weather wasn’t great and in fact the place was closed on Tuesday due to the weather so we were lucky yesterday that it was only light rain for most of the time we were walking. Not a good place to be if one suffers from vertigo but to be honest I thought it was pretty tame, I’ve done much scarier

  25. When I was a lad in the 1960s we used to have an annual visit from a group of aunts from the Mid-Notts and Derbyshire border area, places like Kirkby, Selston and Underwood. Their accents always fascinated me, especially (if my memory isn't playing tricks) the use of two syllables where I would use one. So, for example, they would rhyme "here" and "there" when they spoke as hee-yer and thee-yer and "book" would not just be boook but boo-uk. "No" could often be no-wer. Does anyone else remember this and is it still used in broad accents in the area?

  27. You certainly make The Black Boy sound much more attractive than the grotty Littlewoods and Primark that followed, Mary. During the later '60s though, most of the older smaller city-centre hotels were closing unable to compete with towers like the newly-built Albany and Strathdon. The only real memory I have of the County is having a drink and a Manikin at the bar with Stan Ogden from Corrie who was staying there. Yes, I do go to Lincoln from time to time, we're not too far away, but I much prefer Nottingham. I don't know if you are referring to Steep Hill which I agree is very ple

Nothing wrong in that and I'm happy she's in love but she has left to live quite a long way from the restaurant. My husband now besides his own work is now in the difficult and frustrating situation of training 2 new assistant chefs or rather apprentice chefs. So he has less time at home, is very very tired and sleeps when he gets hom

He just waved me on! On another occasion myself and a colleague were being driven by a German chap from Germany into Switzerland. This was a more thorough border search where we were spreadeagled over the bonnet of the car and frisked whilst another officer pointed a gun at us!

  33. Found who I believe to be the son, who is on the Electoral Register with his wife, but only up to 2011. So, he may have died, or has just removed himself from the publically available electoral roll. Online death records only go up to 2007, so I can't confirm whether or not he's died. Doesn't look as though the house has been sold recently, though. If you send me a private message, can give you the address - worth writing, just in case he or his wife are still there

  34. I've done some research on him too. Agree with David on wife - Ethel Ellen is named as his wife in his Army service records, and the addresses matches the one you have. One daughter, as David says - Ivy Florence, who married Joseph E Rose. Ivy and Joseph appear to have had 2 sons, both born in the 1930's. One of the sons has died, and haven't found the other one, although have found a marriage for him. Perhaps investigating S H Gething's siblings and their descendants, assuming he had some, would be worth doing, as it's quite an unusual surname

  38. I agree that there are still some wonderful buildings which have not been pulled down. The Lace Market is a prime example. What saddens me is that I remember when it was a bustling area of industry back in the 60’s and has now become a residential and ‘clubbing’ area.

There are also subdialects of Occitan - Maritime, Niçard, Monegasque and more. I've learned only recently that Occitan is quite similar to the language of Northern Italy so, nonna and I may be struggling with similar accents! Going back to my roots, my native language is Hucknall and when I lived there it was easy to distinguish the language of the different areas of the town.
