  1. The toddlers at our group painted poppies on paper plates this morning - aren't they great (even though some of them ended up as partly peace poppies!) here's a photo of some of them

Once, when I was a conductor I was working on the 39 out of parliament St. Up derby rd. to canning circus and don't know what happened but instead of going onto Ilkeston road we went on alfreton rd !! Went as far as boden St. and removed poles and went on boden to Ronald St. And back on to Ilkeston rd.(on batteries !). Nobody said a word. Funny what you remember when prompted. B.

  3. Aged 14, I managed to get my ideal Saturday job at Henry Lloyd’s cycle shop in Netherfield. I was paid in parts for my racing bikes rather than cash, although I’d have happily worked for nowt as Henry taught me how to build wheels, and strip/assemble hubs, bottom brackets, derailleurs, etc.

  4. Thanks for your concern Loppy. We are fine although obviously worried about the disaster. We thought the weather was going to be rainy until tomorrow but just watching the meteo its going to be worse and lasting even longer. It does seem to have passed over here or at least the worst of it. My husband has cousins in Liguria at Loana think I have mentioned it. The promenade is no longer there. Italy is really on its knees. No one has ever seen a disaster such as this. Now theres a fear of the River Po overflowing its banks. Sicily is also under water, not sure if Valledolmo is affected as its fa

  5. My wife is a garden fanatic and she rates the Moorgreen garden centre highly. I find it expensive but the plants are of good quality, rather than pathetic seedlings which arent going to grow.

  6. Interested to hear that Rob. I really liked Henry Lloyd. I built my Claude Butler bike from parts I bought from Henry. He built the wheels for me. Around 1960. He let me buy the parts over time. I didn't have much cash, but I wanted to have my bike. I don't recall that he even kept much records. I know I just wanted to pay him. I never liked being in debt. He just told ne not to worry about it. Pay as you can. Great guy.

  8. Loppy sorry I forgot, we are in Piemonte right in the middle ( sort of) between Turin, Milan and Genoa. The nearest town is Asti but we are 15-20 minutes away in the middle of vineyards. You've heard of Asti Spumante? Barolo etc most red wines are made in this area.

  9. I 'liked' your post because I'm glad you and the family are ok. Very sorry to hear about the level of loss and damage for so many, though. Hang in there.

  10. nonna lives at about the same latitude as me (Nice, Cannes, Monaco) but is further east - not all that far away. It's very odd that the weather in Italy is so much, much worse there than it is here. Yes, I've experienced bad weather in the past week or so, but nothing like that in Italy.

  11. Worked Saturdays and occasional weekdays at TruForm on Clumber Street, around 1965/66 I would think. Next door to Spalls and across from Skinner & Rook and Linneys. Ladies department was best, unless it was raining, when they came in just to keep dry. Sitting low down peeking up skirts gets boring after a while. The firm had a Pakistani Geordie salesman; I couldn't understand a single word he said but he seemed to do ok. We were on commission, which was double on certain lines. On my second day, I cut my hour's lunch break down to 15 minutes so I could earn a few bob more, but was sent bac

  12. My Saturday "job" was an extension of my weekly job, delivering newspapers. Saturday was going around the village collecting the paper money from those that hadn't gone into the shop to pay their bills. It was very lucrative as I never seemed to have the right change! so many people rounded it up to the nearest tanner, good tips for me. Saturday evening was delivering the Football Post and News.

  18. I don't know if I'm imagining, as I think back but I seem to have a recollection of that shop, the window angled inwards from the left, the door set back on the right and sold artists equipment too, canvasses, easels etc which were displayed in the window?

  19. My very first job was shelf stacking in a little mini supermarket on Alfreton Road. Then when I was old enough to legally work a full Saturday, I went to Woods greengrocery also on Alfreton Road. The first week of two was fine, I was on the cut flower department. Then however, I was moved to the fruit and veg section. Never brilliant at mental arithmetic, I had to calculate things like ' a pound and a half of potatoes at 1/11 a pound plus a quarter of mushrooms at 7d a pound plus half a pound of tomatoes at 1/6 a pound'. I tried my best but it clearly wasn't good enough because I suddenly got
