  1. Today is my first day as a non smoker. Steam cleaned the carpets, changed curtains in front room and if it doesn’t move have sprayed it with febreeze, dogs got a bit worried and escaped into the garden. Got chewy things in fridge at least I can eat more for time being as my thyroid is overactive and am still waiting for medication to be sorted out so don’t have to worry about putting weight on at moment. I know it is not a good habit but I did enjoy a ciggie especially after a meal but needs must I suppose. It is getting very expensive, my brand had gone up to £8.35 for 20, can remember when t

  2. I used to be what some people refer to as a "social smoker" (although I never used the phrase myself). I'd only smoke in places like pubs or certain events and locations, so I averaged about 20 a week, and after more than 25 years I never increased that frequency. I stopped about 10 years ago when I was told I had high blood pressure. When I went to my GP to get something for that, I knew the first question he'd ask....so I just stopped there and then and never looked back. Although looking at today's prices, I think that might have stopped me by now.

  3. In fact it was a few years before I even discovered Nottstalgia ! According to the stats, I first registered here in July 2010, but I was told about blood pressure in 2008. Maybe I knew what was coming.....

  4. My Thyroid is inactive , reading 9 instead of 0.4 to 4. Wasn't diagnosed until well after the heart attack, so the inability to function properly (at work or on the bike) was put down to the effects of the heart condition. Now manage 20+ miles on the bike every other day.Trust me, in no time at all you'll look back on it as the best thing that could have happened!

  7. Strange how one remembers the date of their first heart attack. Mine was December 2nd 1999. I was told at the time that I had to stop smoking - I hadn't smoked for very many years and it turned out that the high nicotine levels in my bloodstream were entirely the result of passive smoking. To explain the situation: I had spent the majority of that day at a meeting where there was a huge amount of smoking taking place. This was sufficient to raise my blood nicotine levels to the equivalent of smoking 10 - 15 cigarettes a day. Since then, I have been VERY careful where I socialise bu

  8. It really is the best way. I had my last ciggie April 18 2008, about half an hour prior to what went on the hospital notes as a catastrophic myocardial infarction. It was the kick up my complacent backside I needed. Stick with it. your taste buds do improve, and at some point there comes the realisation that there is a life beyond cigarettes. Good luck

  9. All the best SG. I'm sure you are doing the right thing by giving up the ciggies. I also believe that going cold turkey is the best way - we finally gave up about 1980 by doing it this way. We'd half heartedly tried to give up previously by 'cutting down' but I found I was just clock watching all the time to see if it was time to have another! I finally just told myself that if it was bad for you, then why should I keep doing this to my body. I decided I was a human with a brain capable of making decisions and keeping to those decisions. It was surprisingly easy when I made that final d

  11. So sorry to read about the loss of your boys - losing a child must be the worst thing ever - and to lose two children .... I have no words. Your boys must have been born in the same years as our eldest children who are now 49 and 51. Thank you for sharing about your family x

  15. I certainly will do trogg. It is a case of having to give up I am afraid due to a health condition. I have a vape pipe but don’t like them, just not the same so I am afraid it is cold turkey for me.

  16. Its my birthday next week Jill. I'll light a candle in your honour ! My sister in law is not a bad old stick, despite manning school doing their best to lobotomise her. She works at queens med. as a haematology consultant (clever eh!). Always said I married the wrong one. As for my cousin Yvonne, well you have to be barmy where she lives in Alberta. Going up to Thoresby hall Dec.7th to meet up with the outlaws. B.

  20. It seems, Beekay, that there are few of your contemporaries from school years visiting this site. Same here. There is the occasional old girl who suffered at The Manning with me but they don't hang around for long. I think it's only possible when they're let out for the day while the minders whitewash their cell at the funny farm. Most are probably dressed in strait jackets and dosed with Moggiedon to control the recurring nightmares of the Gregory Boulevard Torture Chamber. I'm only as sane as I am because I was brought up by parents who instilled in me a sense of humour without w

  21. Many thanks for swift replies. Picture the scene... Sweltering midsummer afternoon in mid fifties, a motley collection of well scrubbed small boys are waiting outside said cabin for Akela, a diminutive very well spoken elderly lady, to lead them on their nature walk. Just outside a well worn cart pulled by a huge horse was awaiting the return of it's equally huge driver. During it's enforced wait the horse was steadily depositing a vast pyramid of steaming dung, around which the assembled flies were having a feast. Akela jabbed her gnurled walking stick in the air, bringing

  22. Thank you Margie and Lizzie for your kind words, they are much appreciated. It seems such a long while ago but there's never a day goes by when we don't think of them. They were both disabled but Tina and I never regretted a minute with them. Not going to be morose or boring but it's nice to be able to talk about them. The only downer is at this time of year we feel it most that we will never be grandparents. I think I'll advertise for a ' adopt a grandad' or something. Once again thanks for caring. B.

  25. I was there from 56 to late 59, Sue. I left as soon as I turned 15. Couldn't get out of there fast enough. I don't know who said, "School days are the happiest days of your life." Not true for all of us.

  26. Trying to remember the name of an Argentinian man who lived three doors up from us. If I remember correctly he was a curator at Woolaton Hall. He looked like an academic and had a gentle air and presence. His wife was very kind to us when dad was away in the army. His two daughters lived with us for a while before following their parents back to Argentina....must be an interesting story there.

  30. I know its a bit late in the day but, is there anyone on here who went to 'bugole in 1958? I was fortunate enough to be in A stream throughout school, finishing up in 4a, (Mr Edwards class). I remember some names eg. Barry Moore, Barry (spud) hallett, Kenny trout, Bruce baker, Clive perry (he was a clever lad!), to name but a few. Although it's 60years ago I remember the layout of the boys school as though it was last week. Sometimes instead of buying a dinner ticket we used to go across Ilkeston road to la Roache's to buy a small loaf and stuff it with a bag of chips, then nip in the toilet t

  33. Welcome to Nottstsalgia Jayne. 5 Melsonby Place would've been a classic back-to-back terrace; almost certainly a private residence but owned by a landlord, and rented by your gg-grandmother. This shows where it was. The road horizontally across the top is Narrow Marsh / Red Lion Street The map is before the railway was built through the area, and Melsonby would've been right in the firing line, so it may or may not be on this photo, approximately at the arrow.
