  1. Nice bit of news this morning, my sons restaurant has been placed 13th of 737 restaurants in the province of Asti. Since it was opened hes always been number 1 in the village out of 10 restaurants.

  2. Thanks for the link WB. We let our boat drift past the pump house pictured. In April I was catching fish in the area that the Lancaster was flying over. The reservoir was full then. When boat fishing close in to the bank it was hard to imagine that there was over fifty feet of water underneath. Access to the boat was tricky yesterday. Quite a slope when carrying fishing clobber. The view from a boat is so different than from the bank. The abandoned, sometimes almost vertical bank sides are a little sinister and a stark contrast to the surrounding countryside. Hopefully the res will fill u

  3. The ancient valley's, shrouded in mist. Decades had passed since the ghost's had shown. Gliding on, they slowly appeared, the water's tryst. Now Rainbow's live here, so not alone. The ghost's emerge as stone and fence, Homes and sheep, long gone. Breeze drift us towards remembrance. But there will be no song. The City's needs for endless water. Valley's gone? Not for ever. Ladybower may lose it's daughter. For Mother Nature has no tether. You can tell that it is the first poem I have ever written. Managed t

  4. I have had many German Shepherds and like most breeds there are good and bad. I know many people are intimidated by them, but I have always found them faithful, loving and protective. My 2 boys are German Shepherd crosses and I feel completely safe in the house at nite on my own. Would not be without them. There are some breeds of dog that I am not fond of, I prefer bigger dogs, but the world would be boring if we all liked the same.

  5. Congratulations to your son, nonna. Must be a good place - the Italians, like the French, are not shy in giving their opinions when it comes to the nice things in life - like food! Regarding my dogs, I have a great aversion to Alsatian dogs ever since one bit me when I was young. I have had golden retrievers in the past (my cousin, who I have mentioned on these pages, was a breeder of them). They are very loyal, loving dogs and I didn’t think that I would be able to become attached to another breed until about twenty-five years ago when some neighbours acquired a Norfolk terrier wh

  7. Advanced Nostalgian, goodness makes me feel quite important. Thanks everyone for the encouragement. Seemed strange tonight doing my Friday night shop and not getting cigarettes. Saved some money as well, less than half what I normally shell out so will concentrate on that as I want a table and chairs for my kitchen (Ikea here I come). Did treat the boys to a toy each though, lots of running around squeaking (the dogs not me).

  9. You weren't dreaming Lizzie, cos I remember the photo you are on about. I have gone through all the past threads and can't find it. Wonder if it disappeared when Photobucket was being awkward and removed photos? Having said that, there would still be a reference to it, even if the picture went. It's a mystery.

  10. I didn't know that about Mr Todd - he must have been a young teacher when he taught a young Richard Baker! I heard today that Richard Baker was the narrator in Mary, Mungo and Midge - my kids loved that programme

  12. Our Music teacher at Carlton-le-Willows taught Richard Baker before WW11, strange how that has stuck in my memory, especially as I wasn’t much of a music scholar, I didn’t get beyond playing the triangle. Maybe Mr Todd was the person who first got Richard Baker interested in classical music.

  13. I have no doubt that German Shepherd dogs can be just as you describe but childhood traumas can be very persistent. I did have a preference for large dogs (hence the golden retrievers) but circumstances and the affection shown to me by a certain small dog twenty-five years ago converted me.

  14. The entries for Farrands in the early 60s are interesting. There appear to be two branches of the family, Edward and Frank Farrands, operating at the same time.

  16. I do agree with you Brew about vaping and I think the jury is out on whether it can have harmful effects. It is amazing how many people have the vape pipes, almost like a fashion statement. I have tried them before but could never find an oil that I liked, I thought they tasted like dirty ashtrays smelled to be honest and can’t see the point in flavoured ones when I don’t smoke strawberry cigarettes. Each to his own I suppose.

  18. Certainly will, PP. It's something I'd love to do. Although I attended the 1984 centenary, there was no opportunity to look round. It was just confined to the hall. I'd have liked to see all the classrooms where I was taught, minus the wooden hut. That had gone by 1984! I have so many memories of the place as I'm sure you have. I'll sort it after Christmas!

  19. I love reading your thoughts about Ladybower, PP , especially as you have written them in such a poetic way. Ever since my parents drove us there when I was little, I've been fascinated about 'what lies beneath'. I still find it an interesting place to visit but will look at it with fresh eyes now I've read your poem. Thankyou

  21. Some time ago I found a photo of Norman Villas in Netherfield which is where I spent my early years. I've tried to find it recently on Picture the Past and other websites and haven't come across it again. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks GUYS!

  22. Having stopped for six years and foolishly started again I think smokers will always be smokers. After smoking a couple of cigarettes it was as if I had never stopped and although stopping was easy the first time around it's not now. I tried vaping but where is the logic in that? You are still taking nicotine into your system so it does nothing other than swap one bad habit for another albeit slightly less harmful as far as we know. I wish you success SG.

  23. It's actually the Nottingham photos filtered out from Picture the Past. There's nothing new in there. PTP used to be Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire, but they have now partially separated into two sites.

  24. nonna, they are rat catchers, a speciality of terriers, even more so of Norfolk terriers (which my two are). As you probably know, at this time of year, rats are a particular menace in the wineries so the dogs go out for a specially good time chasing (and dispatching) the verminous creatures. They do work at other times throughout the year as well, depending on how prolific the rat breeding is.

  25. Mention the Golden Ratio to an architect these days and the response is likely to be "Yer wot?" as they wipe their nose across their sleeve. If it's not constructed of breeze blocks, concrete and plastic and doesn't look as though it's about to keel over sideways, it stands no chance of winning the the coveted perspex, lopsided, environmentally friendly, locally sourced, worth all of 20p award. Both the award and the building are guaranteed to drop to bits in 6 months time! Bring back Tudor England!
