We always adopt retired racing greyhounds. Jimmy is our fifth one to date. They come ready trained to the lead and house trained but have limited recall skills and highly developed prey/chase instincts so he's never off the lead except on our garden. He behaves beautifully and is a confirmed couch potato for 22 hours a day. Funnily enough the ones we've adopted don't go upstairs. They don't seem to know what they are. They watch us go upstairs as if wondering how we disappear into the ceiling but don't follow us. Wouldn't have another breed.5 points

Florida recently voted to end greyhound racing by the end of 2020. Right now there are 3,700 racing dogs and many brood bitches and puppies in training. That will be a lot of dogs to rehome.2 points

Hello Eileen, i loved reading your post, i adopted a retired greyhound a few months ago as company for Silas. Silas is the laziest english bulldog it takes him all his time to move from chair to chair, my idea was that an energetic greyhound would encourage him to move a little more. How wrong can you be....the only thing of interest to them both is finding the best place to sleep and trying to avoid going out. Masie is the most loving little girl and i would recommend anyone wanting a companion to consider a greyhound. Gem2 points

When I moved here I joined a monthly book club. The present book we are reading is Home Front by Kristin Hannah about an American woman who is a reserve helicopter pilot in the army. She has just been called up to go to Iraq. Although this is not my usual sort of book (I am more a Stephen King kind of book reader) I am getting quite immersed in it and find myself rooting for her and her co-pilot to survive. It is quite unusual reversing the normal male/female roles, her husband is left looking after children etc (not coping very well which might be a bit of stereotyping) and she is coping with2 points

This compilation has been on Youtube for a couple of years, but I don't think it's made its way to NS. The first two minutes show Victoria Station being demolished - then the next 12 minutes shows St Anns in its later years.1 point

This is what happens when you take a few old photographic postcards, and then play around with Streetview. Not everything gets ruined all the time.1 point

Seeing Sir Roland Hill boarded up was a crime, but when the bus stopped and the man got out took off his hat and bowed and leaving a bunch of flowers was just brilliant. For those who did not know Sir Roland Hill was on Hungerhills Road top on Norland Road St Ann's.1 point

Accrington Stanley and Buckie Thistle Football clubs. Train carriages that were not permanently attached to a "Set" and could be added on to a train on busy days, to avoid overcrowding. I remember the days when flying was a pleasurable experience. That's all gone now with the high security at modern airports, cramped seating and terrible aircraft 'meals'.1 point

Bought a 'ricer' because the TV chefs said it would make better mash. Not strong enough to press the handles so I've gone back to the perfectly efficient tater masher! (Been trying to remember where the breadmaker is - it's in the loft!)1 point

This is a very interesting topic to me, as my mum trained and worked at Griffins & Spalding making wedding dresses and vails. Now she was born in 1914 not sure of her age when she started work, but I have her letter of employment from Debenhams of London, so it seam's that it was in fact Debenhams when she worked their and not Griffin's. When walking down the large mahogany stair case I came across a large index book (which is there for people to look at) and it has names and history in all about the shop, and I thought about giving them mum's letter of employment. At the moment it's still1 point

To save blushes, a name has been tweaked …… In my younger days, I had the immense pleasure to be the object of the affections of a stunning young lady, whose parents ran several chip shops around the city. The smallest ( yet strangely. the busiest, ) was on Bunbury Street , very close to the Bathley Streeet junction . On Bathley dwelt a flamboyant character we shall name Marmaduke, ( guess who ) , who was one of the regular clientele. I distinctly recall our first encounter.... " Well helleeeew honky tonk !...... cooed Marmaduke. " Whah ?...……...stammered yours truly1 point

The 5 shillings was money from my Saturday job that my mum gave me back after I gave her my wages. Before that we didn’t get pocket money. When I started work full time I got the princely sum of £4.50 a week, got £1 of that back. Those were the days!1 point

Hello! Great to be back. I'm enjoying browsing the site to catch up. I've spent the last couple of years with my head stuck in my laptop doing a Master's degree with the Open University. Finished this summer so I'm FREE! Sort of shuffling my feet and looking around at the world and wondering, 'Now what?' The options at the moment are indoor hang gliding or extreme embroidery.1 point

Compo, they are pre-installed. I plug Garmin into my laptop about every 3 months to check for updates. I'm not very computer savvy but there has never been a problem.1 point

The bread maker is great for mixing bread dough, they don't make the greatest loaf of bread, but they do save pain in arthritic wrists. Once the dough has been kneaded by the machine, drop into a large bowl, cover with a damp cloth and leave to raise, knock back, mould bread rolls or throw into a bread tin, cover and let prove then throw into the oven...GREAT FRESH BREAD!!1 point
