  1. Bit of grim news here. I'll try to make it concise. On sunday after church my right foot felt like it had gone to sleep. I dragged it to the car. Then I had a hard time getting the key into the ignition. Probably shouldn't have driven home, but I managed it safely. During the afternoon I tried to play the organ. I couldn't. Right hand fingers are not obeying brain. Gave up! Went to the doctors on Monday a.m. Had bunches of tests. Blood pressure and heart rate high. Yesterday I went for an MRI on my brain. (Apparently I still have one) Came home with a CD ful

  3. Hello LL, I'm sorry to read of your worrying health events. I also had a stroke in 2005 and though your symptoms and also mine didn't show all the classic symptoms as shown in the TV adverts, you could well have had a slight stroke . An MRI confirmed my main stroke, but even years after, I still have partial numbness in most of my left side. In 2016 I had another heart procedure, all went well but four days later I had two TIA associated events in my right eye, best described as looking through crumpled cellophane paper? I'm telling you my story in the hope it gives you some peace of mind mid

  4. Our useless cats are still sniffing around the pantry but they are too late. These useless cats that have cost us almost £2000 in vets fees and insurance have not been able to catch a mouse. Yesterday I bought a mouse trap. Well, two really since they came in a twin pack for £2. Baited them up with some peanut butter and 3 hours later one was tripped. Problem solved. What a lesson in cost efficiency. £2 for traps that work in 3 hours vs £2k for cats that didn't work in 3 months!

  5. Thanks Margie. I have to agree with you on this one. Better a bit medicated than dead. I just got back from the doctors office. Ultrasound of the heart and Carotid arteries to make sure no blockages there. The tech said all looked good to him but a cardiolgist will review it and report back to my doc. One things for sure I'll have had more tests and poking and prodding than I've had in twenty years after this little lot. If they come out ok I should feel great. Just keep taking the Bob Martin's. Well now I'm going to have a bash at the organ. That seems to be o

  6. Since the advent of nouvelle cuisine and celebrity chefs we've a cultivated a breed of pretentious foodies. I think a lot of it is just like the "Emperors New Clothes". At one time you used to go out to a decent restaurant and have a quality meal - preferably something which would be more elaborate than you would cook at home without all the faff that went with that. Now we've got 10 course "tasting menus". Can you really satisfy a hearty appetite with microscopic portions of God knows what on the plate? I used to eat out a lot, especially when I was in business. I was usually the customer so

  7. who snuggles up to you for a cuddle tells you its hungry and follows you around because they love you. Not a mousetrap !!! no contest.. One of my cats doubles as a furry hot water bottle in cold weather, whilst ginger moggie is a podiatrist. He licks my feet and chews my toenails if he thinks they need cutting! Sometimes he gets a bit over enthusiastic and bites my toe! Yes, they cost a lot in food and vet fees but they are worth every penny.

  9. My first reply seems to have disappeared into the ether, I'll try again. I certainly agree with you about pretentious foodies. Not all of us are used to being wined and dined in top restaurants around the world though. A visit to somewhere more upmarket as an occasional treat is all I was remarking on. Sadly due to health issues, not all of us may be able to manage trencherman helpings of rich food either so 'nouvelle cuisine' can be a more manageable option. But it's horses for courses ... well perhaps not...

  10. Hope everything turns out ok Loppylugs. I'd never come across TIA before; I've had to Google it to find out what everyone is talking about. So at least I've learned something useful out of it all !

  11. For us to eat out is always an occasion. I'm afraid that because we have had many restaurants we start to get a bit blasé about food .We don't get to eat out often as my husband is a chef so is working lunch and dinner. Eating out continually gets boring and you get fed up seeing menus that don't offer something really different. It's nice to try different restaurants no matter if they are Michelin starred or not . But we are fussy about the food, it doesn't have to be nouvelle cuisine and doesn't need to be abbondant but it has to be good. We used to like to go into BHS for steak and kidney p

  14. That reminded me of when our son was out drinking with his mates. We lived in a village 2 miles outside a market town but even 20 years ago the taxi fare was a fiver. More than once he went into the local pizza place and ordered a delivery then got into the delivery driver’s car for a ride home for nothing.

  17. Too right. It generally comes from Brakes and is heated up in the microwave. I once took a sneaky peek into the kitchen of a fine dining restaurant and saw rows of microwaves. How else can they bring the stuff to the table so quickly? As in all things you’ve got to see through the con.

  19. Not likely to effect me. I long ago dismissed 'fine dining' and haute cuisine as pretentious claptrap. I may be a philistine but at least I'm not a hungry when I leave a restaurant.

  21. I'm surprised it hasn't happened sooner with all the vids/photos (and even emojis) that are put on here. The poor site must be feeling a bit stressed/overloaded! Question of the day: How many emojis are equivalent to one photo? For quite a while now, my iPad will only play the sound, not the pictures of all videos posted on here - is that a related issue?

  23. Remember those pictures that used to appear in the weekend supplements where if you stared at them long enough they resolved into a 3D picture? Well, whilst staring into space this morning waiting to wake up properly, I discovered I could do it with our living room rug! As that is likely to be the highlight of my day, you can see what a saddo I am!

  24. Thanks LizzieM, What is a typical tasting menu and what is pricey? I guess the prices will now go up towards those of Heston and Rick Stein. I don't mind paying for a good meal in pleasant surroundings with attentive but not intrusive staff but I am over designer food with tiny morsels on oversize plates or served on stuff left over from a building site

  29. nonna, I envy you. The Italians know how to cook for certain. I love Italy and the food is superb. Due to getting a visa for my wife (she is a Russian national) we have to go to Italy for her to open her Shengen visa. Not a hardship to visit Pisa and Firenza again. I dont care much for Rome. A well done steak can be done correctly, it just takes a little more skill from the chef.

  30. Chefs do not like cooking a steak to well done. It's dries the steak out giving you the impression you are eating an old boot. I too used to eat my steaks well done but living here if you have your steak medium it's more tender and twice as tasty. By the way nowadays I don't eat much meat as we have a great choice of vegetables that are equally as good as a steak ( medium). Last night we went to a beautiful restaurant for dinner ( a belated birthday dinner as I was ill on the day) we entered and were the only 2 customers We ordered and ate a delicious meal. 2 starters of octopus, braised

  31. I am a bit of a foodie, I will admit, but Jill, you raise the issue of cheese on toast - now are you going for a full on welsh rarebit with grated cheese, egg and mustard? Pub style toastie? What cheese? Gotta be a good melting cheese. This could be a new thread - the ultimate cheese on toast.

  32. Poppy so sorry to hear of your problems but it seems that the whole of NS is on your side and giving you lots of reassurance from experiences. Do hope all goes well for you and regards your cd results, it's annoying isn't it when you can't look at them. I've got quite a collection and nothing I have will "play" them. All the best.

  33. Hi Loppy. Sorry to hear of your problems Sounds similar to events I had in 2008 and 2010. They only affected my arm and resolved within a few days. But they are recorded as strokes because to count as a TIA.. ( transient ischaemic attack ) symptoms need to resolve in less than 24 hours. I was on Clopidogrel for years but now on low dose aspirin. Please do what your Doc tells You!! Hope it all comes right.

  38. We've not been to Sat Bains yet, hopefully we'll get there at some point. You can't knock having such an establishment in Nottingham and price wise, whilst not cheap it's not that pricey in the scheme of things. l agree with Lizzie, for those that are happy to pay and appreciate more up-market dining, it's a great experience for those occasions when you want to push the boat out a bit. If you look, the reviews speak for themselves.

  39. So sorry to hear of your problems Loppy. As further encouragement, my husband had a TIA in his 50s but was more severe than what you’ve described, requiring admission to hospital for a few days. He was on Warfarin for just a few years but managed to get off that. He had no lasting effects really but his memory was ever so slightly affected. Wishing you all the best and hope for a quick full recovery.

Those that do the number crunching say that the plant had no room for expansion and the facilities were old and there were expensive logistics problems. What does this mean? All of these beverages 99.9% water some 19 million cases per year will now be shipped by truck from either :- Brisbane 2,000 km away Perth 2,700 km away What about the environment and food miles, no matter, the bean counters say it will save $20 million annually from 2020 and the site on the edge of the Adelaide CBD

The local constabulary used to help me to set up the stall (usually in return for a couple of bags of army and navy sweets) before lining up for their inspector's briefing. Now, I'm no midget (5' 11 in old money) but not one of these blokes were below 6' 5 or so. Mum also got me a Christmas job in the warehouse (on Willoughby street, I think) It was chaotic, and the manager was
