  1. We have lived here for over 30 years and had no mice. We get these two kittens and when they are about 5/6 months old they start bringing things in like frogs, moths and feathers. I suspect that they brought this mouse in! No use nor ornament. Oddly enough I've taken quite a liking to them

  2. In the town we used to live in, we had a Western steak house. The owner was all for a bit of fun. Whenever someone (usually a Brit) ordered a well done steak, when it was ready to come out, the owner would ring a big brass bell, announce a well done was coming out and bring out a plate with an old boot on it. My hubby is just the opposite, likes it so rare he usually replies when asked how he likes it, just whip its horns off, and wipes its ass.

  4. I have just started reading a book that was written by a friend from the next village. It is about building a community. The small village has two busses per week and the only amenity was a 90 year old condemned army hut, used as the village hall. They did have a phone box but that was taken away 10 years ago. This almost isolated village with 230 inhabitants, the same as 200 years ago was a forgotten place. With no pub, shop or PO for people to meet, most villagers only knew their nearby neighbours. Following an 8 year project they now have a vibrant community and a brand new village hall. A

  5. Don't worry about it Nonna. I've been called worse than that in my time. Lol. I just thought maybe it was your computer or Ipad having a bit of fun. Bit better so far, I don't have any doctor visits scheduled for a day or two now. Just keep taking my dog tablets.

  6. Norwoods, then the 'Scales' shop as posted earlier. I wonder if there are any photographs of the other side of the road, as Cliff Ton's pic shows only houses on that side of the road? In addition to Dewhursts and the chemists, there was the Co-op, A C Butler builders office, Burr's Optician, Marsden's grocery shop (now an Indian restaurant) where Mum did most of her grocery shopping, the Savings Bank (still there!), a builder's yard etc. The shop that is now a picture framers used to be 'The Clinic' where babies were weighed and checked; where we received our smallpox

  8. Made my ravioli today and put them in the freezer. Tomorrow mince pie. I have to use my mincemeat up, it must be very mature by now. In a near shopping centre we have a very large chinese shop that sell everything. A lot of rubbish but also loads of made in Italy things. I stocked up with baking items such as gift bags , trays for sweets etc I saved quite a bit. Going back again tomorrow once I know what I need for neighbours and friends gifts ( I usually bake cakes, biscuits , mince pies etc for them) They love them as the things I make are so different from Italian bakery products.

  9. Denshaw is right you dont have to pay the discretionary charge as it is what it says.We never did it and thought it a bit cheeky. Our bills had a total and grand total. Customers used to ask for the bill and when completed would ask for another bottle or whatever so we started to fill in just the total and the customer if they so wished would add gratuity. I think its a bad sign of a restaurant to make customers pay for service. I always thought it was like asking for a tip. Also you pay for the food and for the pleasure of it being served to you.In UK its quite normal to tip but its not here

  10. My wife and I have driven up the A46 from Northants today to visit Lincoln's Victorian Christmas Market and it's been a very nice visit indeed. I visited Nottingham's German Market in the square a few years back and thought it was very uninspiring but the Lincoln Market by way of contrast is excellent. I loved Nottingham in the 50s and 60s when I was growing up there but it's lost it’s charm for me these days. The Old Market Square, Burtons, The Parliament St Co-Op and The Flying Horse all gone. Such a shame.

  11. Talking of people doing a runner rather than paying... My daughter was coming to the end of her 12-hour shift at one of the more “upmarket” restaurants in town last night when a table of four left without paying their bill of about £180. She was told that it was policy that as she was looking after their table, she’d have to cover their £60 drinks bill out of her earnings. Luckily for her, they came back today to apologise for forgetting to pay, and to settle the bill in full.

  15. I agree with those two places AfferGorritt, plus Chino Latino, love the food in there too Six of us went to World Service for my husband's Birthday last month, big bill ...... let’s just say the 12.50% ‘Discretionary Service Charge’ was £54! But it was a fabulous evening and worth every penny seeing as he thought it was just us two out for a meal and then he saw our kids sitting waiting for our arrival, having driven up from Hertfordshire.

  18. Sprouts are the spawn of Satan ! They were designed to be bane of recycled teenagers, guaranteed to embarras at the worst possible moment. Personally, I much prefer them chopped and stir fried with chicken and noodles, with a few water chestnuts on the side. Maybe they are made to ensure we all have bubble baths ! Beekay.

  19. Good job I'm off today woke up with a banger, shouldn't drink on empty head. Not been to Rescue Rooms for a gig for a while, it was packed like sardines in a tin, bumped into loads I'd not seen for years, the crowd loved Max Splodge 30 years & he still can't play that trumpet, Buster Bloodvessel looked fit & well down to about 13/14 stone, had all the boneheads stomping. Barmaid made me chuckle, it was my round some craft IPA on draft, she pre-warned me it was & £7 a pint! ....... How much?

  20. There is a massive topic on this very site, "Pubs closing down" with an impressive one thousand three hundred & thirty three replies, can you imagine if this was posted there? Making one thousand three hundred & thirty four replies, the interest & memories it may jog? Anyone noticed all these NottmPost articles are written by Andy Smart, I think he should pay the bill for our site? Before it disappears, It's clearly where he gets all his info from.

  23. Everyone has different tastes, like and dislikes - add in allergies and it becomes virtually impossible to cook something that has universal appeal. Having said that some chefs have delusions of grandeur and seem to think any weird concoction they create is ambrosia of the gods. One tiny morsel on a plate the size of Wales is supposed to send us into paroxysms of delight. I like my food without spice, garnish, sauces etc. and any seasoning (salt) I'll do it myself. I also like to recognise what's on my plate and not mistake it for a painting by Jackson Pollack. Many enjoy the

  25. I can never get into 'What are you listening to' as my iPad just can't take it. Still, I can live without it, as I probably wouldn't play what was posted . Same with the deluge of photos, some take an age to come through, and before some clever dick suggests it, yes, I need a new iPad

  27. I had problems around lunchtime. Wrote two different posts and nothing happened when I tried to post. I even sent a PM to Katyjay to see if I’d been banned from the site. She either never got the message or she’s still thinking about it. Oh well it’s enabled me to get on with more important tasks this afternoon.
