  1. Been to doctors this morning, cold over Christmas has left me with a hacking cough and a bit wheezy. Expected 3 days antobiotics but got a 7 day course and not the amoxicillin (not sure of spelling) I thought I would get. Don’t usually get colds as a rule, perhaps something to do with stopping smoking and my chest clearing? Then went into town with my sister, just wanted to change my phone contract to sim only, not bothered about upgrading phone, I only use it as a phone not for anything fancy. It was quite simple at the EE shop in town, at least they spoke normal English not tech talk. Then

  3. Well done StavGirl, nice to treat yourself using money that would have gone up in smoke previously! I’ve not set foot in Broad Marsh Centre for YEARS, don’t suppose there are many shops still open in there. Cumbria Police have sent me a NY pressie ...... speeding ticket on Christmas Eve. Ok, no excuses, I need to start driving like Miss Daisy, I’m so annoyed with myself.

  4. Good question, LL! Have you never had the urge to get away from her that rules and enjoy a night without having to fight for the duvet or that couple of inches of bedspace that always seem to be the domain of the male partner.... but had no valid excuse? In the tent I can go for a pee without needing to engage in a wrestling match in order to win a few inches of space upon which to lie upon my return. New Year's Eve is the ideal time to enjoy a restful night and recharge the ageing batteries. Or maybe I'm just plain mad as a hatter?

  5. A bit off topic but where I worked in Doncaster was a place called Finningley across the road from the RAF base where Vulcan bombers were based at one time (it is now the Robin Hood Airport, bit cheeky that but Yorkshire is always trying to steal Robin Hood). We were told that a Vulcan bomber was doing the rounds of air bases they were stationed at to say goodbye and were allowed to go out of the offices across the road to see it fly by. It actually had “goodbye” on the bottom of the plane and passed almost right over us so low we could almost see the pilots. Although I am not a plane enthusia

  6. Perhaps it enables him to appreciate sleeping in a nice warm bed the other 364 days of the year! I can appreciate my nice warm bed without the need to spend a night in a tent. However, for some obscure reason, I've not slept well for several nights and at 5am this morning was so desperate for sleep that I sprinkled the pillows liberally with clary sage oil. Never fails. Smells a bit like kipping under a privet hedge but sleep enfolded me at last!

  7. Glad you asked LL, I've always been curious but afraid to ask. He's a nice bloke but has lived in some strange places so maybe it's an obscure fertility ritual he picked up from the oomegooly tribe. Maybe doing penance for offending some deity or other and is cursed. There is always of course the chance that he's simply crackers and completly barmy.

  9. The mythical Salamander! They are lovely creatures. Had a lot of them in our French place. The myth was due to Salamanders having been seen to emerge from fires. I had an outdoor fireplace in a ruin. The woodpile was just a few metres away. One evening to my astonishment a Salamander scuffled out of a blazing fire. It had obviously been residing in one of the logs. It seemed quite unharmed.

  14. I must be a minority, I've always admired it. It was very possibly an earlier design as mentioned, the Art Deco style was outdated when it was built late '50s. The architect, Thomas Cecil Howitt was also responsible for some other striking buildings you may be familiar with, the Council House and Nottingham University Portland Building. Oh, don't forget Home Brewery too.

  15. Ah, yes, nonna. The rattling skeletons in the cupboard! My tree has quite a few and one of them was the reason auntie Emily didn't want to answer my questions. I found out anyway...you do when you're terminally nosey, like me. Another couple of skeletons are the reason why my name is Sparrow. Gt gt grandfather was illegitimate, as was his mother. If Mary Ann and Esther Sparrow had been married, my name could have been totally different...something common like Smith, perhaps!

  17. Born in the Firs in 1946. Lived in Bath Street, Old Basford, Huntingdon Street and St Ann's. Married a girl from Bilborough, then eventually moved to Swansea and Neath before moving on to Leeds. Three Children all still in or back in Yorkshire after some adventures in Manchester and London. Brother went off to London for some years then returned to the City Centre. Grandchildren showing every sign of spreading their wings soon.

  18. Nonna is quite right, essential oils should always be used with extreme care as they can be dangerous. I put a drop of clary sage on a paper hanky or the pillow case. It's quite sufficient. The cats sleep at the bottom of the bed and cannot ingest the oil. I never use it on my skin even diluted with a carrier oil. In fact, its ages since I used it at all but there are times when it's the only thing that works. Better than sleeping pills!

  22. Gem regarding dogs sleeping on the bed, Ive read recently that its reassuring when they sleep on the bed as we feel more relaxed and safe. I have used Clary Sage but only a couple of drops as its quite strong. One of my books say its warming and relaxing good for nervous anxiety, tension. Use very sparingly ( use in moderation) large amounts can cause drowsyness . I can vouch for that it knocks me out. Use in bath, essence burner , massage. It is alsoantiseptic, anti spasmodic, anti depressant. For troubled sleep, massage the solar plexus area and the feet with diluted ( with

  23. Compo.... Re. a night in the tent. Makes good sense. Not far to go for a pee. I just pull the covers back and snarl. Last time I slept in a tent was in Algonquin park Ontario in 1972. We zipped our sleeping bags together. Quite romantic it was, except we were scared we might get eaten by a bear.

  27. Mine would have been Galloway. Mary Hunter became Boyle when she eventually married and then became another name when she remarried again. That became a new thread to follow but as it wasn't my line I didnt bother but someone that was following Marys 2 nd husband gave me quite a few pointers in the right direction and it brought forth a younger brother of the illegitimate ggg/f., that died very young but couldnt find the father, whether it was the first one or the one she remarried. ( if you understand. ) Youve got me interested again.

  33. I don’t mind the look of the building, so much better than other monstrosities they threw up a few years later. The Peregrine Falcons enjoy rearing their young up there too, lovely to watch the proceedings on the installed cameras. Despite once owning a Tech College scarf when I was a Mod in the 60s I’ve only ever been inside the building once and that was to see Geno Washington and The Ram Jam Band play in 1967/68

A Gibson 500piece 'Christmas with Granddad 'theme. Just about my barrow. Looking forward to completing it. I couldn't get a good picture to post but anyone interested, it can be found on the internet. Cost us. £1.50. Well done Compo. It dunt tek you long Miduck.

  37. She is called 'Just Jane', and is privately owned. She is currently restricted to taxi runs, as the airframe is not airworthy, but the owners are trying to raise enough to get her flying again. Before her days as 'gate guard' at Scampton, they had one of Barnes Wallis's blockbuster bombs there. Everyone assumed it wasn't filled, but when they came to remove it they discovered - it was! Nice mess that would have made of anything on the A15...

  40. Yes things can get a little sticky at times. Mine started when an aunt gave me a paper copy of our side of the family and looking at it ,it suddenly stopped. At first I didnt research but then I got to wondering why it had stopped.. My great great g/f was illegitamate so I suppose it was a blot on the family. That was my paternal ggg/f but my maternal family from cornwall goes back as far as I have been able to go , to 1660. Along the lines I found a lot of sadness and interesting stories, eventually finding out how my surname came about then finding another person following the same line

  42. I don't remember being nosey as young as that. One of the reasons I started researching family history was because as an adult, I found myself remembering people (relatives) who I'd met when I was a kid, but back then I didn't know or bother about exactly who they were. As I got older I started thinking things like "who exactly was Uncle Eric who was sometimes at my grandma's house" or " I remember Uncle Sam and Aunt Kathleen, but how were they related to us?" I started trying to find out about the 'mystery relatives'.

LizG, I am well through a rewrite of a book I started back in around 1988 (focussing on Arnold County High School) and have split it into several sections, but Liz, you'll probably be pleased to know that in the ACHS section, memories of 'Roys Motors' feature in a transport section, as going to Bramcote for two years before ACHS, the daily journey was an important part of our day! I hope Paradiddle can find a pic as I believe there is one somewhere
