I have just read an article in the local paper about mobile phones being used in school classrooms. I was stunned - had no idea that pupils are allowed to use their mobile phones whilst someone is trying to teach a lesson! In a separate article, same paper, Professor Baikie (UHI), who has children at both primary and secondary schools, said that he is in favour of allowing mobile phone use in classrooms?! Last week the BBC series "Twinstitute" Doctors Chris and Xand van Tulleken put the mobile distraction idea to the test. Using identical twins they held an intelligence test with h5 points

No one had any difficulties imposing bans...on just about everything....when I was at school. Make up, nail varnish, jewellery, non uniform items, speaking to males in the street, biros, long hair not tied up,...the list is endless. Why should it be so difficult now?4 points

Thanks for the warning poohbear, isn't this just another example of fake news though? From changes within the past 12 months... on a motorway with 70mph limit (and no temporary lower) over 70 up to 90mph the penalty is 3 points and a fine dependent upon income. Between 91 and 100 it's a fine, 4-6 points or ban. Over 101 it's a fine and minimum of six points or ban and only possible custodial sentence dependent on actual speed and circumstances. I'd say responsible drivers who keep to speed limits needn't be worried, if you choose to exceed limits be prepared to risk yo3 points

Those uniforms have a sort of American/Canadian look, but the headwear is unfamiliar. Polish maybe? Military uniform not my world. I wonder how many of those unfortunates survived 'till 1945 ? Or even to the end of June '44...……..3 points

Just a footnote, antibiotics were for a chest infection that I was left with after having a heavy cold (sounded a bit like Darth Vader), wouldn’t dream of going to doctors for a cold I just dose myself, lasts 7 days if you do, a week if you don’t.3 points

Just found out that as of midnight, Monday 8th January 2019, all cameras on the M1 and M25 went live, set at 72 miles per hour. Auto ticket generating system with 6 penalty points. Watch your speed and please tell everyone else. Any speed over 90 MPH is an instant ban and possible custodial sentence.2 points

You should have felt "at home" there Lizzie , surrounded by Mapperley bricks "Extensive brickyards existed on Mapperley Hills for several centuries. They ultimately supplied much of the building material for the city and 10 million Mapperley bricks were used to build St Pancras station in London. Nottingham Patent Brick Company"2 points

This is more ‘How Was My Yesterday’ We were in London for a couple of days this week. Took in a show and a superb dinner with 18 friends in a private dining room at The Royal Garden Hotel. All great but we really didn’t have time to do a lot yesterday morning, other than retail therapy, which to be honest I wasn’t fussed about doing. We decided to get back to St Pancras and check on the cost of changing our rail tickets to a train 2 hours earlier than originally booked. Our original tickets cost £98 return for 2 of us. East Midlands Trains wanted £52 each to change our one-way2 points

Social media reports of M25 and M1 speed cameras 'going live' from January are being dismissed as fake news by Highways England. Stories started circulating on social media and web forums on 6 January, with claims that every overhead speed camera on the M1 and M25 would be active by the next day. The posts conclude with a warning that the details of every driver that exceeds 70mph would be sent to a main hub for an instant ticket. The reports have been rubbished by Highways England. “Safety cameras on smart motorways are set by each regional police force, we are unaware of any sweepi2 points

As I use this stretch of the M1, Newcastle to Nottingham, a few times a year, I’ve not been looking forward to the switch on. Spending more time looking at your speedo than what’s going on around you ain’t good.2 points

I went out with Tony Britton for a while, he ran the Sherwood shop. He had a very nice Mercedes sports car with a 'pagoda' roof. Then I met the man I ended up marrying, he saved me from spending a lifetime selling spuds2 points

GI's wore spats over their boots and over their pant bottoms, Para's on earning their jump wings had to tuck their pants into their boots, a "badge" of what they were. ALL of those fellers were volunteers, many, I'd hazard a guess, 35%-40% never returned, and probably buried in the US war cemeteries in various European countries.2 points

I read Band of Brothers, which was made into the TV mini series, fair few photos in that, and Dick Winters book too. On Youtube you will find many videos by the survivors of "Easy" company, who relate their personal experiences, once again, all gone now. There's also a few reunions of that company, sadly the last couple were done by the sons and daughters of those brave men, in honour of their late Fathers.1 point

Major Dick Winters wrote a fairly good history of his company, E company, very modest man, and according to the men he commanded, a brave man who led from the front, highly respected. Sadly he passed away a couple of years back.1 point

I don't think the feller on the left was a paratrooper, two on the right are, even the junior officers up to majors wore the hat the two on the right are wearing, I wonder if the guy on the left was in the army airforce??1 point

Not necessarily, it could still be quicker by tram! Fortunately I’ve never been in an ambulance but understand you can sometimes wait a considerable time for an ambulance to turn up.1 point

In a similar vein, there are four Nottingham trolley buses at the Sandtoft Trolley bus museum, well worth a visit on a running day for public transport fans1 point

Glad to see my memory didn't let me down as I had completely forgotten the existence of Judges until I read about them up-thread and remembered that was where my mother bought bread circa 1950. I love the way this forum can take me back to things, places and people I haven't thought about in years. It's very encouraging to find that I CAN remember them with a bit of help!1 point

The max flight time of a drones battery is 25/30 minutes if your lucky, if it's breezy or windy then the battery discharges a lot quicker. The drone will return home automatically as soon as the battery becomes low. If you get into trouble when flying then you can press the RTH ( return home ) button and it will land on the spot where you took it off from.1 point

Oh yes, human rights. We didn't have those in our day, did we? I can see us now, complaining to Manning Staff about our human rights. We'd have spent the rest of our school careers under the Dome!1 point

I derided the tram system initially, but having had to use it several times over the last couple of years between Basford and Hightields / Beeston, I've found it so easy. No changing busses, no traffic congestion along the Ring Road, and no dodging drunks and dopeheads through Bilborough and its environs. Marvellous!1 point

My original piece contains a slight error . George Mee was actually born in Arnold in 1900 (not Bulwell) . He attended the Primitive Methodist Chapel Sunday School as a boy there and returned in 1931 to give a concert . The family at one time lived on Front Street . GEORGE MEE ENCORED AT SCHOOL CONCERT George Mee, the Derby County footballer, was one of the artists at concert given by the members of the Primitive Methodist Church Sunday School, Arnold, last night. 69 .......Long Row to Rolleston Drive, Arnold. The bus I used several times a week to get to work and down town to enjoy myself in the 60s and early 70s. Every morning at 7.50am I sat on top deck putting my mascara on! After I moved from Nottingham in 1975 I never got on a bus again for 30 years as we lived in villages and public transport was very limited, but it all changed 15 years ago on our return. Nottingham really has a fantastic public transport system.1 point

Blimey, that brings back some memories. Andos had a passage down the left of the shop where folks took rags/old cloths to be weighed. My dads shop was two doors to the right of Andos, he sold his shop to Reg King (the bookmaker/ boxing/wrestling promoter) who eventually got his money back from dad, due to his fondness of gambling!.My grandmas cafe was a further two shops along, next door to Nobles the cleaners, formally some tyre place.1 point

It's a pity that the doctors are not allowed to tell a patient the truth about self inflicted illnesses. If they had the time to discuss issues with a patient and the support support to give honest advice there would be a massif reduction in prescribed medication. Patients are often their own worst enemy.1 point

There's more to it than not being effective, there is the ever-increasing danger of antibiotic resistance in normally susceptible organisms following indiscriminate prescribing for normally trivial illnesses.1 point

Been a good day today despite still having a runny nose and a bit of a cough (last antibiotic tonight, they have eased it a bit). Met up with a friend from my “yoof” who I havent seen for 40 years or so, just kept in touch with Christmas and birthday cards. Was worried we wouldn’t recognise each other and perhaps had drifted too far apart but as I walked up to the meeting place I recognised her and we had the biggest hug. We haven’t stopped talking for over 4 hours (taking in coffee shop, drink in pub and then meal in pub). It was like we had never been apart and really rolled back the years.1 point

HSR yes there was a City Fire Brigade Station on Triumph Road, this was up until 1961-2. This was when Dunkirk Fire Station was completed and manned. The dates are as close as I can determine, hope that helps.1 point
