  1. Let’s get this ‘Day Trip’ topic back on track as I’m old enough to remember when half the back page of the E.Post listed all the different rail trips available that weekend. (full page at Bank holidays) As a railway fireman I also worked on quite a few, the first one I remember was Easter Sunday 1950 when the Ilkeston Labour Party ran a trip from Ilkeston (run round the train via Bennerly Junc.) to Rhyl. Nth. Wales. 10 coaches & a ‘Black 5’ in charge. Bit of a ‘hic up’ at Crewe as no conductor to Rhyl waiting , 20 minutes before one turned up looking forward to the overtime he would be

  5. I can’t do the mountain of holiday ironing without watching the telly so this afternoon I am watching, quite by chance, ‘Collectaholics’ BBC2. I think Gem would enjoy the programme as it has featured an old lady with a collection of dolls houses and fascinating contents. Oh blimey ...... now a man who’s got an arcade of one-armed bandits, and shoulders covered in dandruff. Might have to turn over, makes me feel ill.

  6. Back behind my grandma's house in Netherfield were two large banks of cinders and gravel near a ditch which ultimately made it's way to the Trent. I think it was a branch of the Ouse Dyke. The kids had an old tin bath which just seemed to stay there. We loved to ride down those cinder hills in it. Usually ended the day with plenty of bumps and grazes, but they were the days when real men didn't cry.

We had single deck trolley buses in Adelaide Australia they were used until 1963 A total of 56 were used made up of two types, Leyland Canton (original intended for China hence the name) and Sunbeam MF2B (Silver) chassis single deckers. One of each type is preserved at our local tramway museum Photos By William Adams - Tramway Museum St Kilda Adelaide

  15. They certainly were the days, and when the day ended and you went home you wouldn't complain of the cuts and bruises, as you would have to explain where you had been and been up to , then you would receive more bruises.

  16. Time for more 'Minutiae'. Sadly, I don't have pictures. And I may have related this before but I can't recall.. it's an age thing... As we looked out from our house on Southglade and over towards Rigley's we saw a hollow meadow , leading to a steep bank. That bank led up to a flat area created by Rigleys Wagon Works, as a storage area for assorted rail rolling stock which they serviced, repaired or scrapped. It was essentially a large private set of rail sidings. I think I've already described how one tree, growing from the base of the Leen Valley Line and the 'Rigley's Bank',

  18. Ben I have a major problem my wife understands me and tolerates me. She must do we have been married 52 years this June, we met when we were both 17, she does roll her eyes regularly I just don't know why. As a Hucknall girl born and bred she knows many people in Hucknall , when walking through town she complains that I am always stopping talking to people ,she says she doesn't mind but most of them are women. I use to always be in bother when I was younger but I found out you had more fun being a lover not a fighter. I knew I was past it years ago when she said I could go out when I want , wh

Hey Trogg,,,pity we so old now,,, i have met you,,and you are a lovely bloke.....you more than likely had a better life than me (ie less trouble) but you remind me of a chap that worked for me in Peterborough,,,he was never appreciated by the previous boss,,,he would go anywhere and tackle any job,,, i promoted him straight away and got him travelling east Anglia mostly with me,,,we had some great times together work and pleasure,, last time i saw him about 20 years ago, he told me our times together were great and never strayed from the ''straight and narrow again'' still with his Essex bride

  29. The registration on that vehicle shows as 1965, I left bilborough depot in early 1967. We were still doing the hospital run then. Another bit of useless information, I always volunteered to work Christmas day 10..00 till 4.00pm if I remember right. Now as I look back I think those years on the buses were the best of my working life.

  33. Plantfit If you type "Bajaj and Triumph" into your web browser you will find a lot of news about this project, apparently the first bike produced will be a 650cc unit. Whilst working in India I was at the company that made the Enfield Bullet and I saw a diesel engined version. I can imagine some poor Indian rider being launched into orbit if it kicked back.

  35. I've not bought one yet. Just briefly looking at the new rules regarding flying distances from airports I've not yet discovered how an 'airport' is defined. I live across the River Trent from RAF Syerston within the 3 mile airfield boundary. It is primarily an active gliding establishment but military exercises do take place from time to time, usually with low flying helicopters. Even the Red Arrows give a 'private' annual show there. The field is substantially higher than us so there is never any chance of collision but it only takes someone to inform on you to invite trouble. I've got to stu

Talking Pictures channel 81,, All about a group/club of Anglers from Sheffield in the 1960s,,,scenes included Fishing on a riverbank in Lincolnshire,,,most were dressed in suits with collar and Tie. The matches lasted 6 hours and ended with the blowing of a whistle,,then the weighing in took place. Also filmed them at their AGM,,,Where prizes were handed out Cutlery sets etc,,they also interviewed some and their wives,,,in fact the whole programme was totally BORING...............LOL

  40. Not knocking your info, Rog. The question is still can such a device connect to a satellite? Especially with the car twisting and turning etc. when other systems need a carefully aligned dish. Just doen't quite add up to me. Part of the unexplained I guess. Edited to add. Thanks Mick. Your response just came in as I responded to Rog. above. I'll read over it somemore.

  41. Dave I use Here Maps. http://www.androidtipsandhacks.com/android/here-maps-best-satnav-app-android-free/ Pre downloaded maps on the phone & then uses the phone's built in GPS module as Rog explained. The beauty is this app uses no data & can be used in walking, cycling or driving mode. Works very well.

  45. This one's a bit obscure. A row of houses with some really ornate carvings above the doors. It's particulary relevant that she's playing a stringed instrument as one of these buildings was occupied, some years ago, by an "establishment" well into stringed instruments! Sorry for flooding the site with photos!
