  2. My daughter-in-law has been Vegan for a couple of years, plus she hasn’t drunk cow’s milk for several years. It’s difficult to have a reasoned discussion with her about her chosen diet, plus she’s from Czech Republic and is a bit ‘in yer face’ with her ideas, for instance she refuses to get the child vaccinated. She’s a yoga teacher and in fantastic shape but what I don’t and will never agree with is that she’s bringing our granddaughter up as Vegan. The little one is nearly 6 and quite tiny compared to her contemporaries. I just hope she’s getting the protein needed to grow big and strong

  3. What a load of tosh. If it hurts, STOP DOING IT! At our time of life we are never going to jump over tall buildings or run marathons. Your body will tell you when enough is enough.. It's OK for physios to warble on but they are all much younger and have no idea how painful arthritis can be. Some discomfort, fine, but actual pain no.

  7. I knew I was asking for it. Lol. There's a guy on the organ forum I'm on chose the login name....Myorgan....He should have known what he was letting himself in for. Edited to add....Carni.. Physio is fine but in your case it does sound like it agravated some issues and at that point I think you have a right to say, Enough! In my case they are trying to rebuild the muscle -- brain connection. I wouldn't say I'm in pain. Just some discomfort frm working muscles that may not have done much for quite while. Wishing you well meduck.

  12. Actually an opportunity there for the entrepreneurs... top of the range accomodation for well-heeled students. Not so tongue-in-cheek either. I know students often get a bad press on here but a point many don't consider.... in these straitened times Academia is a growth industry. Aside from various establishments of further education in Nottingham and just taking our two Universities, a total business in excess of £1billion per year with 10,000+ jobs. Total students approaching 70,000, imagine the infrastructure and thousands of ancillary jobs to support that. Like them or not, st

  13. So sorry about your shoulder, Carni. I agree with Brew that exercise causing severe pain probably isn't very good thing! Gentle exercise only up to the point of pain is possibly a better idea. Are they SURE it's arthritis in your shoulder joint or could it just be inflammation of a tendon? https://www.arthritisresearchuk.org/arthritis-information/common-aches-and-pains/shoulder-pain/specific-conditions/painful-arc.aspx Worth a look but obviously talk to your health professional about it

  14. This is where I don’t understand the self righteous attitudes of some vegans and vegetarians. Plants too are living organisms and they are ‘killed’ to be eaten. We are omnivores by evolution and I see no problem in eating meat. If people choose a wholly vegetarian diet I’m fine with that. My wife bought a Greggs vegan sausage roll for me and to be honest it was quite tasty; it just needed something to harden up the texture. Most veggie products that ‘pretend’ to be a meat equivalent I find unpalatable.

  22. If your fall has caused a flare-up of existing osteo-arthritis in your shoulder joint, it might settle down again in 2 or 3 months. Let's hope so. Poor you - as if you haven't enough to cope with! I hope all will go well when you have your procedure next week xxx

  26. I wish I could advise you carni I really do, the only thing I'm sure of is if hurts there is something amiss. My shoulders are 'uncomfortable; if I lift them with my arms bent - so I don't do it. Likewise with my knees, they are really painful so I avoid bending them unnecessarily. I would never argue against a qualified doctors advice but...

  28. Each to their own I suppose. Our daughter is a veggie. She used to eat meat but stopped when we kept a few sheep. I love vegetables, especially salads. It's veggie foods that pretend to be meat that I don't like - apart from Quorn sausage rolls!

  29. Phil, I think that it's only animals that are considered 'sentient' (their words) that vegetarians object to eating, although fish are often included as well, aren't they... Is a fish sentient - capable of feeling or perception? I wonder if a vegetarian would eat insects (which is what I heard we will all be eating soon to boost our protein intake!) I presume that plants aren't considered sentient by vegetarians.... as I expect they mow their lawns, pick flowers, pull up weeds (screaming?) and prune their roses? But as you say, each person has a right to their own opinion on these m

Thanks carnie and Cliff Ton.During my time there Roberts Windsor was owned by the Vestey family who also owned Dewhurst the butchers among many other companies Whist there we. were visited by Oliver Philpot one of the Wooden Horse escapees during World War 2 ,who worked for the Vestey`s and on another occasion Cathy McGowan whose own name soap Windsors were making. Those of us of a certain age will remember Cathy as a presenter of Ready Steady Go and at the time, a fashion icon. As can be seen from Cliff Ton`s posting Windsors were credited with making Derbac Soap but also made Derbac Liquid

  38. I know your Truro Crescent house Fly2. Richard and Josie Barron bought it. Richard worked at Plessey and was a computer expert. He passed away several years ago but Josie is still there. My old house at number 7, third along from yours had been lived in by a Players fireman and had the remnants of the direct to Players telephone line equipment on the back wall. Do yo remember Mr Perkins at number 5. He had been there since they were built in the late 30's. He told me once that he was stood at his gate when there was a roar overhead and 3 German planes in formation flew over quite low. He said

  39. Agree about getting older Margie. I was wondering about claudication, PAD and also peripheral neuropathy. That said, claudication is supposed to settle if you rest for a bit but this effect can leave me very sore and stuggling to get my legs going for days if I overdo it. My history of smoking (years ago), medications, a fondness for the odd scoop, cardiovascular disease and even the recent repeated prescribing of Metronidazole could all be contributiing to the picture. That said, my Doc says pulses in my feet are OK. Numbness isn't too bad and seems to vary a bit. Just have to wait

I'm 54 and would gladly go in now.. Can't beat a good laugh..

  45. I had a cataract operation on my left eye nearly twenty years ago on the NHS. It was completely painfree and was like a miracle as I could see perfectly straightaway. Everything looked brighter using my new lens, - especially when looking at something white - when compared with my right eye (which didn't actuallly have a cataract!) I understand there is a very long NHS waiting list these days, though.... at least there is round here.. Unfortunately, the benefit of having a new lens doesn't help much these days as I now have macular degeneration in both eyes and am losing my cent

  46. Yes, certainly looks like one but it appears very basic. As said, there has always been a box at that location. Phone boxes had started to appear around the town centre before the war but were usually bigger and had a telephone sign above. I wonder if that particular one might have been for police use at that time.

  47. My guess is that it's on North Circus street opposite Albert Hall and facing Derby road (going left to right across the picture where the horse is). The east end of Nottingham St Barnabas Cathedral on the left behind the wall. Those buildings across Derby Rd were all demolished when Tollhouse Hill was developed. The buildings far in the distance were demolished when Wollaton st was developed. The kiosk; there is a modern phone kiosk there now.

  48. I was born and grew up in the shadow of Players Radford factories. In fact my mum would always tell me if I asked what time I was born, "dinner time when Players were coming out" As the factory turned out at 1pm and 5pm the usually quiet Churchfield Lane where the entry to my house emerged became awash with crowds rushing from the factory. Mainly woman, many with their rollers and head scarfs if they were going out that evening. As a very young child I'd go and stand at the top of the entry and watch the turnout. Once I must have stepped out into the throng as a woman found me outside the sho
