I spent so much time enjoying the posts on this forum that I forgot to say hello and introduce myself! I'm actually Lancashire born. We came to Nottingham in 1962 as my mum's side of the family were all from Stapleford/Nottingham/Beeston and Lenton and she wanted to return to Nottm - daft really cos she then moved to Wales for her retirement. Grandad was a cycle mechanic & had a bicycle shop in Lenton or so I'm told - I never met him. Here is rare evidence of the elusive Lowland Haggis; a quadruped similar to the Mountain Haggis but with even length legs instead of two long and two short. Sadly, this family lost its forest home to the bulldozers who destroyed their forest in order to make way for a wind farm. I tried to save some of their babies but alas, they didn't survive the winter. The species is now practically extinct in the far north due to the prolifereation of their greatest enemy - the ubiquitous wind farm.

Strange day yesterday. (Mon) Just home from my Mexico jaunt to find that Mrs Col's cousin had passed away from Cancer and went to her funeral Monday morning. That whole side of the family seems to be very susceptible with four brothers and many of their offspring passing. Not good. Then I got news that my wife's Brother in Law is in hospital and just operated on for some sort of bowel tumour. He's 80+, generally fit as a 'Butcher's Dog', regular cyclist and dog walker etc. Never sick a day in his life.. Latest news is he's doing OK. His Mum lived to well past 100. Hopeful signs.

I've always like the idea of hanged, drawn & quartered, we could then display the remains all over Nottingham, if it was a woman burn her at the stake.

Veering off topic a bit, but I was flipping through ' Picture the past ' and came across this picture from Douglas road school , Ilkeston road. I was gobsmacked to this early shoot of my late youngest brother, ( Ringed). Realise it will not mean owt to anybody, but it gave me a bit of a turn. Beekay. Maybe I Shoulda stuck it in Old photos.

Over the last few weeks Mr Hood as been cleaned up & given new bow & arrow with added bow string, over the weekend someone's half hinched the arrow again, about time Robin Hood was shown some respect.

That auction used to be originally in the car park on the other side of the river near the pub barge just off Beastmarket Hill. It was always known as 'On the Hill'. Since it moved over the road into the other car park I think it's got bigger. Lots of 'stolen' bicycles and, as you say say, loads of tat. You can even buy a plank of wood! I've not been for a while but it was always fascinating.

I got into stock racing from 1964to1966 seasons enjoyed it but very expensive hobby i raced with the best Ellis Ford the intrepid Albert Griffin Nev Hughes who helped me out getting started a few locals,Fred Wallis Ray Watkins Dave Fox Fred Ball Laurie Hooton just to mention a few.l raced at Coventry a couple of times with Trevor Frost Aubrey Leighton Barry Hebborn those were the days.

I hear tell there is a family of Lowland Haggis live and work on the Falkirk wheel. When the lower gondola needs to go up then the Haggis's bale out the water with saucepans. Meanwhile dad Haggis turns a big starting handle in the middle. Hey presto ! said gondola goes up. Simples.

I'm sure all Notts fans eyes will be on bottom club Macclesfield game in hand tonight against 7th placed Exeter. Fingers crossed. Wonder if old Alan will coff up on Wednesday for the high court winding up order from HMRC .... Interesting times?

My mum told me a couple of stories about the Black Boy from when she was nursing during the war. From what she said it was a bit unsavoury then. One was that she was asked out by someone to meet him at the Black Boy but she decided not to go. One of her friends went instead and he had got a private room there, apparently he ended up chasing her around the table until she could make her escape!

Wow! Can't say I've ever heard that said? Morning! Brew.. good to hear you are 'cleared' of the 'Big C', but don't underestimate the potential for 'whiplash' type injury from relatively minor 'shunts'. I got 'rear ended' ( Oooh -err Missus!!..) last year and was fine until the next day when all sorts of symptoms appeared, including numbness in arms/hands, sore shoulders and a very odd sort of anger/short temperedness which lasted for a few days. It wasn't my fault so I claimed.

Perhaps you could look at using Teamviewer (it's free) and someone can physically watch/show you how it's done...

Don't give up mate. Main thing is to copy that YT address into NS. we've all struggled with it at one time or another, but we'd like to see your videos.

They would have been from me, I didn't get good at tennis until I turned eighteen lol. To be honest I don't ever remember any tennis being played at the junior school, more likely the tennis balls were from rounders or some other small ball related game. Unless they were were from the senior school of course. All long gone now of course, in fact I wouldn't be surprised if the houses that replaced the school, factories and remaining houses are not about ready for a rebuild. Keith

I used to go to Clarke's School of Hairdressing up a tiny street just off the square which I think may have led up to Maid Marion Way. The lady that cut my hair was gorgeous with long thick straight black hair that she used to flick from side to side whilst cutting - that did it for me! I wanted to be an apprentice there when I left school in 1970 but my mum said she couldn't afford the £600 fee! I don't know if that fee was correct or she just didn't want me to do hairdressing!

I’ve eaten in the Grosvenor many times but that goes for all the Berni Inns in the area - even as far away as the Peel Arms at Tamworth and the one at Boston. I wish there were similar places for such quality and value now. I think I’ll get some friends together and have a Berni evening. Prawn cocktail, rump steak and Black Forest Gateau, washed down with a bottle or two of Rhône! Happy memories. I think there was a “special” unique sauce poured over the steaks whilst being grilled. I remember the Empire - my Mother used to take my sisters and me when we were young. We queued for ages to get into the Gods and were packed like sardines, everyone's knees touching. Good picture. Yes, the door with 'Theatre' over it is the one I mentioned in #50. I've scanned this plan of the ground floors of the two theatres (the bold lines showing the Theatre Royal). It shows there were two entrances/exits to the Theatre Royal behind that door - one to the stalls and one to the steps leading up to the gallery ('Gods').
