  1. Just to throw a contentious spanner into the thread. I don't think water companies should be run at a profit. It is one of life's essential elements and for private enterprise to control it is wrong, doubly so when they have a monopoly. They own the water in the ground, in the rivers and streams. They would I'm sure, if they could think of a way to do it, claim ownership of the rain that falls on your roof - they already charge you for collecting it.

I don't pretend to understand much about on-line sales or owt else on line............I reckon its killing the art of 'Conversation' i know i go on about my days in retail with Marsdens even before self-service,,but whats nicer than a friendly chat interlaced with good humour ? Even catching Shoplifters is now done with boring camera watching then passing on the info to the Police,,,who really don't want to know. Hello or even Ey-up,, Mrs Williams,, half lb of Lard,,half lb of Cheddar Cheese,,tin of Tarantella tomatoes,,pound of shoulder Bacon and an Ounce

  5. Well another year!! another Bowling season.!! This week is when most of the outdoor green's open. You have your bowls polished to a very high shine, white's and greys washed and ironed; new bowling shoes (as last season the others had let wet in ) Fixture list, competitions you have put your name down for names and phone number of other members. You are rearing to go, Then you meet new players/team members. Bowls is a game for gentlefolk you say? The game of Bowls is not easy, but not impossible you meet lots of people, when playing you must be vigilant

  6. I'm coming round to the idea of a rerun and it seems to me to the biggest objectors to one are the leavers. They have a point, we had a referendum and they won but it's now clear that the outcome and all the ramifications were not known. There has been sharp practice on both sides, lies and laws broken. It's a bloody disgrace that we are in this situation.

  7. You're right there ben, I remember me and my sister walking up to Marsdens every Saturday we would both carry a bag and mi mams order book. All the shop assistants would talk to us and ask about the family and the Manager would give us a bag of broken biscuits to eat on the way home

  9. You obviously have not got kids living at home? I have DPD knocking on my door at least four times a day, My youngest lad must order a new pair of top brand trainers every week, probably wears them 3 or 4 times, my under stairs cupboard looks like a JD Sports stock room, wish I took size 8. Then the daughters stuff gets delivered here in bags, New Look, Missguided, BooHoo, Top Shop, PrettyLittleThing & Fred Perry, it's non stop! Hold on ...... Someone at door

  10. Most of us are angry and annoyed about the Brexit situation and the country is divided as much as Parliament. Without getting into politics I think that the referendum should be rerun and decided on a decisive majority, say two thirds. With the way that the referendum was set up last time the vote could have gone either way, theoretically on just one vote.

  13. You’re right Enigma, these are the marker posts on our garden wall, but they are about 40 metres from our gate (and the bloomin’ tree). But right by them are two more cast iron plates, as you can see, AND another massive tree! There’s also a Benchmark on our wall, visible next to the yellow plate.

  17. They do tend to be making the consol almost portable in some of these locations, Brew. They built one in the performing arts center in Calgary. it was connected to the rest of the systm by a single co-ax cable using some kind of multiplexed signals. That way theycould easily move it off stage when not required. That was 30 odd years ago. probably use wi-fi today.

  26. Passed my driving test in '87, I was living on Nuthall Rd but immediately found myself driving back to my old haunt of Bilborough every single night. Soon formed good friendships with kids the same age as me who had cars just as 'good' as mine. We probably got on everybody's nerves as we used to drive (sometimes fast) between Bracebridge shops and Cocko shops and everywhere in between, in convoys of 5 or more. The Milestone on Glaisdale was very popular with us all too, for a soft drink and a gathering. We also used to visit Eastwood, Ilson and Notts town centre on a friday/ sa

  36. Online shopping generally is killing the mom and pop local store. I owned a mobile phone store for seven years. Folks would come in so they could handle and play with the phones. Then they'd go home and buy one online. we had a hard time competing with that because of our overhead. We were getting older. The writing was on the wall so we sold it to a young 'go getter.' He is now owned by a bigger chain and so it goes. Long way from the little local stores I grew up with in Netherfield.

  38. Last time I had an ingrowing toenail I performed the surgery on myself. Quite a lot of blood was spilt but the problem was cured. I doubt I have the flexibility to do a diy job now as I’m no longer able to assume the lotus position. At one time, as a party trick, I could put a leg round the back of my neck. I broke wind the last time I tried that though - much to the amusement of the dinner party guests!

  40. Those were the days though that no one took daily baths (showers were unheard of except at the swimming baths) Just the weekly bath all in the same water. The washing machine if you'd got one was only filled once a week and no dishwashers. I can't imagine water bills were very high even with large families.

  41. Can you just imagine the blame going on amongst builders, structural engineers, architects and insurers. It’s a disgusting looking modern edifice which will look as grotty as 60’s structures after a few years. The whole lot should be pulled down but that will never happen.

  42. I agree, but I found if you look at the prices from the other retailers (not Amazon themselves) they are usually much cheaper than Amazon. By clicking on "New From" you find the same thing at much lower prices. This is an example of a DVD I bought recently.

  44. If I was in the shopping centre business I don't think I'd build another one right now. Some of the biggies over here are really hurting. Some of the big stores are closing. The usual reason given is that online shopping especially Amazon is really hurting their sales. Regardless of the reasons it is starting to hurt the big developers too. Can't make much rent when the tenants are going belly up.
