  4. My back problem. I have been using a plaster to ease the pain in my back now for7 weeks and it sometimes works and sometimes doesn't. However he has increased the dose to 10mg and today is the first day of a higher dose so was very careful and only had a sip of wine as I wasn't sure how I would react. On the way to the restaurant (anniversary lunch) it was all bends and hills and I felt a bit iffy but it soon passed but the plasters aren't supposed to kick in until after 3 days so lets hope,I have an appointment to see a neurosurgeon in 3 weeks so will see what the odds are.

  10. I've had intermittent problems with my back since 1962 ish when I was nursing. In Orthopaedic hospitals in those days, there were no hoists so lifting a patient was just done by 2 people. It became particularly bad when I was in my early forties (even though I was no longer nursing) so I was sent for an X-ray, which showed very diminished disc space and considerable wear and tear. Over the subsequent years it has been mostly OK apart from some acute phases, so I presume a couple of the vertebrae have actually fused together. However, my spine is now less flexible so I can no longe

  25. Fly I've been told by drs and specialists that my back will never get better now its just a case of trying to control the pain. My problems started more than 30 yrs ago and its got worse scoliosis 5 hernias. The hernias got from lifting the mattress on mums bed as she kept telling me mice were in it. I'd had this tale for ages and it got the better of me. I got so mad I just got the mattress and heaved it to the floor. (my fault but there... )

  26. Col, I believe the raised bilirubin will make you skin itch... when I had 'infective hepatitis' when I was about 15, I remember feeling very itchy. Hope it will soon get sorted for you as it must be very annoying/upsetting/wearing having itchy skin all the time.

  27. Thankyou Carni. Unfortunately the pool hasn't yet been opened yet so just sitting on a chair outside. I've usually seen to the pool myself but this one is very complicated and the pool man took the workings to pieces for the winter and I doubt very much (although I took a video ) that I could put it all back together. All the equipment is in a sort of well and I couldn't reach down. No one else can do it. Husband bad hip and knee, daughter isn't very tall and won't be able to reach and son hasn't got time or patience. Anyway its worth paying someone twice a year to do the work while we relax.

  30. Finally saw a Doc yesterday. Skin itch no better. Probably a bit worse. I used no creams or owt yesterday so the Doc could see me in all my natural glory. He doubts anything like Scabies. Sent me for bloods all of which are back already. Nothing too remarkable. Very slightly low Iron (probably the booze.. I'll go back on the B Vit supplements) and raised Bilirubin. I always have that.. Gilbert's Syndrome I believe. But nothing dramatic.. which is good. Prescribed another cream. 'Dermocool', which is basically moisturiser with a bit of Menthol for 'cooling'. Warnings all

  34. Once a rosemary bush has become woody it is best to get rid of it and start again. I know that some herbs can have deep and thick roots so if yours is like this I would dig around the roots about six inches away from the stem and chop them off at a point where they are thin enough to cut through with a sharp spade. This should allow you to lift the plant completely. I have lifted thick, woody Gorse in this manner with no great difficulty. This from www.gardeningknowhow.com: "Can You Hard Prune Rosemary? Gardeners are sometimes hesitant to make drastic cuts on rosemary shrubs

  39. As I've said some months ago, we're mostly of a similar age, and are totally entrenched in our political views and opinions, and our take on life in general. If like me, most folks formed their views as they progressed through their teens, or earlier. No amount of cajoling will change people's opinions , but good debating, backed with facts is beneficial to all. Infantile quips and fabricated rants are no good to anyone.

As for 'porcini' Maybe Nonna has a view on this. Years ago, I read somewhere in one of my Fungi books, that 'porcini' ( little pigs.. or piglets) was a generic term covering a number of edible Boletus and possibly even Leccineum and Suillus species. I've not been able to find that quote again. Maybe they were wrong or maybe I read it wrong, but most people these days only seem to use 'porc

  48. With 30+ years in France, I have pretty much adopted a French lifestyle – including their way of eating. There are a few English things I do miss though, the main one being a decent cup of tea. The French (and most of continental Europe, I think) don't have a clue how to make tea. They use those daft little teabags on a string, dunk them into tepid water for a few seconds (until it is just faintly tinted) and that's it. When I used to commute UK – France one of the first things I craved on the plane to Heathrow was a decent cup of British Airways tea. Such was my need for this, I w
