  1. Some politicians here have proposed that the age for retirement, and therefore for a pension entitlement, be raised to 70 years of age. That might be acceptable for shiny ar$es in government or office jobs but for people that do heavy manual work it is obscene as bodies are worn out long before 65 let alone 70. In a decent society we should be looking at lowering the retirement age for those involved in hard yacca.

  2. I was immediately drawn to the wall as it's made of the same material as the one which was outside my old house. Here's a photo of me and Paul (and our old dog) taken over 40 years ago against our wall

  3. I hope I was a easy birth, probably delivered by local ladies at my Grandmas Carlton house, I am sorry Mam that I couldn't wait just a little bit longer before making my entrance to the world. Another 39days and I would have been one of the new NHS babies. Bad timing there Dad.

  4. RESULT !!!! Severn Trent have reduced our annual water bill from £772.45 to £453.50, a saving of £318.95 because they have been unable to fit a water meter at our property due to that blinkin’ 100 year old tree. Now that really is a great result and will mean I won’t be getting mad every time him indoors turns the dishwasher on when it’s only half full or if he waters the garden. It means I won’t be putting a house brick in the toilet cistern and walking around in the same clothes all week (I wouldn’t anyway!) I must admit that my husband had decided that I was going to make his

  6. Since using this medicinal patch for my back, I've been virtually pain free but there are side effects (like always) Nausia! From Sunday until today I've been living on toast and crackers. Hopefully it will ease a bit the longer I keep it on. I have to change them after 7 days and can't take them off unless its under medical control. I'm hungry but can't stand the thought of food.

  7. I was born at home on 30 November 1957. The midwife and my mother disagreed about the due date. Mum said 30 November and Nurse Heaton, who lived further up the road, said later. Nurse Heaton was away over the weekend of 30 November/01 December and my mother told her I would be here by the time the nurse returned. Nurse said that was rubbish! Nurse was wrong! Late on the evening of Friday 29th, mum went into labour. Outside lurked the thick fog that always occurred on my birthday. Dad rang for assistance and was told the duty midwife was in West BRIDGFORD and he'd have to go and fe

  8. A VERY sad day indeed. However, I will still be proud to tell anybody that asks, that I support NOTTS COUNTY. C'mon you 'pies.

  9. Yes it is sad. My late father was a life long avid Notts fan. Always joked that the ref would wait for him to sit down before he'd kick off. I got dragged along when I was about 5 but I never got into it and was bored to death so I stopped going when I was old enough to speak up. His loyalty to the pies though has rubbed off on me a bit and I listen on radio Nottingham most weeks. It's been a disastrous season and I'm glad that dad isn't here to witness this. He'd be heartbroken. Ive got quite a lot of Notts memorabilia inherited from my dad. Signed photos badges etc. Is that worth more

  10. My dad was never one for spending money but we did have the occasional treat of going for a steak at the Black Boy Berni Inn on Market Street. I remember their Irish liquer coffees too.

  11. Actually Margie, it seems much of Bulwell stone was also limestone, a different composition. I'm not sure when or exactly where the two sorts were quarried.

  12. Bulwell sandstone, Margie. Unsurprisingly, it was quarried up the top end of Quarry Rd, near the pit. My dad was born on Quarry Rd, later Commercial Rd.

  13. Yes, your point about the effects of manual work is very valid, Oz. Don't under-estimate the effects on some of those involved in cerebral work though. I spent a lot of my working life behind a desk in 'shiney arse' mode, I suppose. Long demanding days in a very fast- moving business, I decided at the age of 56 I'd done enough and made enough and packed in work before the stress did it's worst. No way could I have worked to 65. Some folk thrive on it though, mental and physical, horses for courses I'd say.

  22. I'm not a socialist but I think that privatisation of such an essential industry was wrong.

  23. Just to throw a contentious spanner into the thread. I don't think water companies should be run at a profit. It is one of life's essential elements and for private enterprise to control it is wrong, doubly so when they have a monopoly. They own the water in the ground, in the rivers and streams. They would I'm sure, if they could think of a way to do it, claim ownership of the rain that falls on your roof - they already charge you for collecting it.
