  1. I had to go back to Russia quickly about three weeks ago. My wife's mother died. We could not make it back in time for her death, and my wife was hysterical in a hotel in Moscow when we found out that she had passed away. The deterioration was so sudden. I did like her, and recall with great fondness my dad talking with her, although my dad understood no Russian and she did not understand any English, but they would still talk and laugh. We did get to the funeral which was seriously odd. Open coffin and the funeral was actually outside under a gazebo in 30+ degrees o

  4. I went to the Senior in 1969. Cheap trip included train tickets to Liverpool, ferry tickets, a bag of sandwiches, and a copy of MCN, courtesy of MCN; 5 quid. We met friends in Ramsey who gave us a lift up to our chosen spot, The Gooseneck. Highlight was of course Agostini on the MV. Gooseneck was a slow corner and while the field were negotiating it, knees out, elbows out, Agostini, who had caught most of them passed them here on the outside then disappeared up the hill leaving a black rubber line on the road, sounds were awesome since we were sitting on the roadside bank, feet dangling over t

  6. Effectively the Broad Marsh centre blocked off the route to Trent Bridge and I am sure it was a factor in the awful destruction of Arkwright Street. West Brigeford is flourishing and the Trent is a lovely place to be. How stupid was it to close off a perfectly functioning road which was the main route to the river and the football and cricket grounds. Furthermore, I could imagine that Arkwright Street could have been a street of boutique shops and curio places, micro pubs and a delight to walk along.

  7. Even my GP doesn't believe I'm 76. She reckons it's not decent for someone of my age should have such good skin. ( I have a picture in the attic which ages through the years..)

  12. My heart goes out to you. Once is bad, twice is awful and a tragedy I cannot imagine. My family, who I loved, grew old and died, with their loved ones and peacefully at old ages, as it should be. God love you for your loss.

  13. Ah yes, the candles. The stubs are not to be thrown away at all. They are to be put into the grave. It was too windy for any of the candles we held for that to be possible, none of them lit due to the wind. I still have my candle and will light it at my parents grave. It seems appropriate.

  18. A friend has photos of his Polish grandfather, who he never met, lying in his coffin, surrounded by males of the family. All looks distinctly mafiaesque! My friend's father, as with many other Poles, was marooned here after WW2. In recent years, due I assume to the influx of Poles working in the UK, my friend has found a jar with a burned out candle on his father's grave the morning after All Souls. Presumably, the Polish community has logged local gravestones bearing Polish names and treated them all to a candle at All Souls, as is their custom. Personally, I think tha

  25. My neighbour had a Sunbeam Rapier in the 60s. As I recall the Sunbeam Rapier was the 'sporty' one, the Hillman Hunter, the 'cooking' version, and the Singer Vogue the 'luxury' version of basically the same car. I'll soon know if I'm wrong....

  30. Well, I'm humbled. I've just been looking for the photo of the Overseas Column in Centrals yard (didn't find it ) and saw this post. In reality, the small number of people abusing the site is minimal in relation to the lovely and interesting people who make this site so interesting . So, spat over, back to great memories of Nottingham and it's life. Regards all.....

  31. Will2017, thanks for the tip about the 'Playedinaband' site. A goldmine of info. Found this: Whichwhat pictured on the stage of the 360 Club in 1969. 50 years ago! I've consulted my 1969 diary and we had them booked on Sunday 2nd Feb 1969, and Saturday 19th April 1969, so very likely one of those dates. I will almost certainly have DJ'd both nights. Just for interest, the Exit sign just visible is over the 'Stage Door'/Fire Escape on the side wall of the club. Looking out of there you'd see St Mary's Church and a view down towards Boowul Market. I don't know if

  32. Dunno worrappened, because I was obsessed with music as an adolescent. One of my best mates at the time Bob Wyville (sadly deceased), and his younger brother Graeme, formed a band called the Hound Dogs while still at school. I seemed to drift off more towards motorbikes and other stuff. Graeme went on to be in various bands including Rainbow Sunset, then a stint in the BBC created band 'Highly Likely', who did the theme to Whatever Happened to the Likely Lads'. I think he was also in Paper Lace for a while. These days he's playing bass in the Billy Fury Story. Last I

  34. Googling "anti-biotics" and "itching" does bring up a number of hits saying that one in ten people have allergic reactions and one of those can result in hives . I think this is what's affected me as it's the first time I've taken strong anti bacs. I'm continuing with the anti histamines and the itching (all upper body) is slowly receding .

  35. #66 It's amazing how quickly these anniversaries come round, MD and the odd memories that stay with you. When my mother was in Kings Mill, the new hospital wasn't quite finished and, on the day she passed, I was unable to find a parking space anywhere on the site at 3pm so had to park in Morrison's next door and walk back to the hospital. It was clear that mum was rapidly slipping away and as I only had 2 hours to park in Morrison's, I remember telling her, in her comatose state, not to go anywhere until I had moved the car! I raced out of the hospital, jumped into the
