  2. It was the first place for me, and I bet many other teens, where I socialized. As a raw, just out of school and into the big world of Work, teenager, it was Mecca. All the latest songs played, you could dress up a bit as best you could on your meagre wages, and have a laugh. Everyone was slim, and to me, looking good!

  3. I think all members who went dancing at the " THE VICTORIA " or "LOCARNO" should have 2 minuets silence for the old lady. Bless Her she saw a lot of lovers, boy's trying it on, girls putting on there stockings, makeup, backcombing there hair, changing shoe,s to dance and much much more, but never, never, said a word.

  4. This is not me, but someone we were with that did something daft. A group of us were on a cruise together a couple of years ago. One of the stops was Rotterdam and we went into Amsterdam for a day of walking around. We saw a toilet sign and most went in, while the rest hung about outside. Bob in our group comes out the toilets with something in his hands. Holds them out and invites us to help ourselves to the candy, said there was a dish on the counter to help yourself. I looked into his hands before anyone else, and said, Bob, they are tampons! They were very small, obviously compressed, an

  6. Back in the 80s I was living in Cromford, Derbyshire. If any of you know that part of the world you'll doubtless know the wonderful book shop there. If you don't know it, they mainly sell second hand books. Well I was working there (Thatcher's time so needed two jobs to help pay the 16% mortgage rate) and one day a customer came in and asked about antiquarian (rare) books. "Oh, yes", says I airily pointing him in the direction of the books relating to fish and aquariums.....oops.

  9. Picture below is of Forty Bridges taken from Kimberley side of the first arch, which is the one that Main Street Awsworth went through. As a guide as to it its whereabouts Bridges Van Hire is immediately around the arch on the right hand side. The Gate Inn (still there, and still a pub!) can be seen at the right of the pic. The other viaduct you can see through the arch is the line that ran into Awsworth Station which was the Friargate Line. It ran from Derby Friargate to Nottingham Victoria. The two lines met at a junction well left of the picture, so both lines, Friargate Line and the one ov

  12. Just got home after going to see the new Lion King film. It was really good and I thought the animation was excellent.... it was much better than the original version. It was quite an emotional film because the animals looked so realistic... must admit I cried when Simba's dad died and little Simba tried to get him to wake up, then snuggled down next to him because he didn't know what else to do... I like the songs in the film, too. It's not just a film for kids so I'm not moving into my second childhood, although come to think of it, I don't think I've ever fully left my first

  14. A depressing wet Sunday, so whilst madam is upstairs ironing, I'm giving Frankie Millers Double Take CD a blasting. Frankie had a few hits in the 70's, such as Darling, and continued touring throughout the 80's, while also concentrating on his songwriting for such luminaries as Johnny Cash, Ray Charles, Sir Rod, Kim Carnes, Cher, The Bellamy Brothers, Waylon Jennings, Bob Segar, Lulu, Bonnie Tyler, Roy Orbison, Etta James, Joe Cocker, Clint Black, Willie Nelson, Joe Walsh, and the Eagles. However, in 1994, Frankie suffered a massive brain tumour. He was in a coma for five weeks, and hosp

  20. Been with Paul to the vascular clinic this morning. The clinic doctor said that they'll see him in 6 months to review the situation with his blocked femoral artery, but for now he should just 'work and walk through the pain' as that is a good thing. !!! (Presumably to encourage more peripheral arteries to take over from the blocked main one) He said that unless the lower leg and foot are severely compromised i.e. the beginning of gangrene and pain all the time, even at rest, then they would prefer NOT to perform a bypass (which would have to be from the groin to below the knee)

  21. Gosh! Looks like I've missed lots of excitement... And lizzie, thanks for the 'Big Up', but in 1965 I was just starting work as an engineering apprentice at't pit. I didn't become a world famous and much loved Fab DJ until 1969.. I was in Nottm from Saturday until Monday morning. Went to the famed Gala Bingo both Saturday and Sunday nights and can only say that the place is a sorry reflection of what it was when it first opened. Was bought out by 'Buzz' a little while back. Prizes, attendance and the whole atmosphere have gone down hill. Only one of two bars open and two sta

  22. Hi Oz., had a look in the cupboard and the pattern is like a light blue background with little stars pattern all over it. We only ever used to make coffee to take to work, (we took it in turns) I used to make it in a jug, complete with milk and sugar. Only ever used it since to carry hot water when on long car journeys for fresh tea. Do use it when we have a threat of power cut to store boiling water, especially during storms. It's not a food flask so doesn't have wide mouth. B

  24. My mum had arranged to meet a female colleague from the office at The Victoria Ballroom. The colleague didn't turn up. My dad was there that night, asked my mum to dance...and the rest is history. He forever after teased her that she hadn't really been stood up but was on the prowl for a chap! They got engaged six months later. Married in 1949. Reached their 57th wedding anniversary. Good old Victoria Ballroom!

  27. Jessieb29, you have our DavidW to thank for all that info on your ancestor! I certainly wouldn’t have thought that just a few months after David had found all that information it would prove so important to an ancestor’s research.

  28. This is brilliant, my mum and I just came across this as we were discussing our family tree, in which it came up with this article because we are related to tommy strong. We have never came across anything to do with tommy but all we knew was that he was know as the Strong man of Nottingham. As I am only 18 I ask my nana a lot about my Irish heritage and it’s lovely to finally find something more about him. We only have one photo of him so I’ve been going off that for years, it was the only photo we have of him. I would love to know more about him. Thank you

  31. Michael, it's really good that keyhole surgery can be done to remove the cancer in your sister's lung and also that there has been no spread. You are so right about seeing the doctor early when you feel there may be a problem with your health. I hope you and your wife are also managing to stay strong. xx

  32. My sister phoned me yesterday and told me that she'd been to see her doctor to get some test results. The hospital tests had shown that she had lung cancer as they'd found a small piece in the lower corner of her lung. I was devastated as I help my wife with her own cancer. My sister then told me that they are going to do keyhole surgery to remove it within a few weeks. The test results also stated that there was no other cancer anywhere so she's very lucky that they caught it in time. It just shows the importance of seeing your doctor when you have a problem and not just thinking it will go a

But that's the great thing about narrow boat art, no two pieces are the same. It's all done freehand so no rulers etc., used. Might come to the point where I can only paint jelly !

  34. When I was about 8 or 9........ the brakes on my bike were screeching. Every time I stopped or slowed, I got a high-pitched squealing noise from the brakes on the wheel rim. To solve the problem, I put oil on the wheel rims. It was a while before I was able to stop safely again.

  38. Locomotive No.53809 was built for the Somerset & Dorset Joint Railway (Slow and Dirty) in 1925 at Robert Stephenson & Company Newcastle, Tyne and Wear. Wheel arrangement 2-8-0 and classified as 7F heavy freight locomotive, though often hauled passenger trains. Eleven were built in two batches in 1914 and 1925, and were used until withdrawn between 1959 and 1964. Two are preserved. The design used a Belpaire firebox and Walschaerts valve gear. A leading pony truck was added to distribute the weight making the loco a 2-8-0. The cylinders were mounted high on the frame. The cylinders
