  2. This is also relevant in the Meet-up thread. Another view of Wollaton. This is late 1940s, and the X is the place where the Wheelhouse pub would eventually be built.

  4. I have a pet tarantula I bought 10 or more years ago when I was drunk. Seemed like a good idea at the time. My wife hates the spider but she has been with me longer than the wife and has not caused me any hassle, so I will stay with the spider.

  5. Poor old Howard! He was one of my favourite characters. The other end of the spectrum from our Ben!

  6. Here is another picture containing all of the landmarks that the picture I posted on August 13 has, namely, Forty Bridges, the Gate Inn and the viaduct carrying the Friargate Line. All in Awsworth of course. The photographer would have been standing in a field 50 or so yards to the right of the where the photographer in the previous mentioned picture was standing.

  8. You could try the Electoral Roll for 1935/36, assuming his home address was given on the Death cert and as long as you know who he may have been living with at the time. There's a burial on 7 Feb 1936 for a George Henry Smith in Notts on the Deceased Online website, if the burial date seems to fit There's a small charge to get more details and the record mentions that there's one other burial in the grave, which MIGHT be a family member. There's also an article in the Nottingham Journal of 8 Feb 1936 saying that a man of that name died in Hospital following an accident at work. He was 59,

  9. Remember seeing Marina in an episode of Pointless a few months ago. Facially, she looks exactly the same. An amazingly funny lady. She used to live in Thorne, north Notts at one time.

  10. So sad. She was brilliant as Pearl, trying to keep track of Howard's antics. Always one step ahead !

  16. I always understood that flour should be fine sieved when using it for baking to stop the weevils going in the bowl. People say it's to get air in the mix but I still think it's to trap the weevils! I expect the supermarket bags of flour have already been sieved before being sealed in bags, though.

  17. Picture below is of Forty Bridges taken from Kimberley side of the first arch, which is the one that Main Street Awsworth went through. As a guide as to it its whereabouts Bridges Van Hire is immediately around the arch on the right hand side. The Gate Inn (still there, and still a pub!) can be seen at the right of the pic. The other viaduct you can see through the arch is the line that ran into Awsworth Station which was the Friargate Line. It ran from Derby Friargate to Nottingham Victoria. The two lines met at a junction well left of the picture, so both lines, Friargate Line and the one ov
