  1. Trogg, just think of the sum of all human knowledge as being contained within an empty biscuit barrel...then marvel at what there is to discover outside its confines! Failing that, ask Ben!

  3. Next time I'm up that way I'm gonna have a look for a well swept pavement and a tidy drive, then I'll know it's your gaff Fly. You mention the bridge at Arnold rd/Hucknall rd., I remember when I were about 11, I were in Heathfield isolation hospital with my youngest brother, John and we used to look out across to that bridge and count the number of coal wagons passing by, pulled by a steam loco. Was hospitalised for about 3 months wih Gastro- Enteritis, so had plenty of time to watch the trains. Don't know where they were heading to but hazard a guess toward Victoria station way.

  4. Now then Stu,,,i reckon the tree Huggers are correct,,,keep the footpath (ex railway line) and the Trees that run along it,,,but still make the road between Arnold road and Kersall drive 3 lanes by demolishing all the houses on the other side,,,would also solve the rubbish problem,as i reckon its those householders that launch their rubbish towards Andover road..........LOL.

  5. And of course the Beatles changed the whole game. They moved away from 'Mon-June-Swoon' stuff into much more realistic and pointed lyrics which pervaded not only their 'documentary' songs like 'Rain', 'Penny Lane' etc., and their 'psychedelic/surreal lyrics' such as Strawberry Fields Forever', but also their love songs. 'Girl' being the pinnacle for me, but there are many others... 'This Boy', 'Yesterday' 'Here, There and Everywhere' and so on, through to the frustrated venom of 'I'm Down' and the stark admonition of 'You Can't Do That'. They not only changed lyrics, but also song struc

  6. What a cheapskate, Colly! You're well rid of her! I love your thoughts on quantum theory. You're a divergent thinker and they'd have loved you at The Manning! What they never seemed to realise was that there is so much interesting stuff to cogitate as opposed to the drivel they were attempting to instil into us! Keep cogitating, my friend!

  10. Yes, the oaks are fantastic, despite most of them shedding their leaves on my property ! Things are ok, and still will be even after Aldi's is operating. If drivers can't look both ways, and pull out / across safely, it's a poor show.

  11. Would solve the parking problem and smashed mirrors that they have as well. I thought the widening / use of the railway as another lane was a good idea untill it was mentioned over 100 Oak trees would need cutting down. I never used to mind queuing along there, I used to have a company van and was paid home to home. No loss to me.

  12. Glad to see someone else sweeps the pavement outside their house, after all its where you live, keep it clean and tidy. PS keep your bloody leaves to your self , I have more than enough of my own.

  13. Carol singing ! Bleddy ruffians, urchins and scoundrels from tuther side of the tracks casing the joints in order to nick our Christmas pressies ! LOL Good and not so good everywhere I'm afraid Ben, as we've said before. There's some real oiks along here. Big cars, but live like pigs in filth ! Still, my conscience is clear. A decent drive, lovely back garden and a regularly swept pavement.

  17. A song with superb lyrics that I regularly view on utube, is 'Where the Stars & Stripes and the Eagles Fly' by Aaron Tippen. It extols the 'Home of the Brave, Land of the free' theme. It's not jingoistic, it just states that if a person is prepared to work hard and have ambition, then there are still endless opportunities for success and a good life in the USA.

  19. Those were the original houses built by Bestwood Coal And Iron. Better quality than most miner's houses back then. My Great Great Grandfather moved his family there when the colliery opened around 1870. I don't knoew any songs about it though... I wasa 'ripping' vinyl to my music server last night and finally got around to doing the Kinks. I was reminded of the great lyrics of their songs such as Waterloo Sunset, Days, and so on.

  20. Colly you astound me with your knowledge, I try hard to understand all of this but I have to admit I haven't a clue. On the bright side I can now boast that I know of a super intelligent man from Mucky Uckna.

  21. Been thinking. What if lights don't give out light but suck in dark so leaving light behind = they'd be 'dark suckers.' When the bulb is full of dark it goes 'phut' & you throw it in the bin with all the dark inside it, you then put a new empty bulb in to start sucking in dark again. You can buy mini weighing scale gubbins for your lampholder with an alarm built in = it weighs the bulb plus the dark & can tell you when it's going to conk out with the extra weight of the darkness it's absorbed, however they're not very accurate & can give a false alarm. Of course the biggest dark

  22. Radford Red, in defence of DaveN it’s not easy to find a previously started topic on this forum. All that nonsense having to wait 2 secs, 10 secs, 15 secs. Before you can search again. At least the photos he posts have relevance to the subject title.

  24. Is Bestwood hotel the one that used to be next door to the pithead baths? I recall staggering out of the baths, when on afters and nipping in for a jar before catching the 'Macko's back to Bulwell.

  25. Would be mid 1980's I think. I remember Picko, Steve Austin & Pulse Disco, great lads... I used to work behind the bar at Bestwood Hotel (Top Pub) in the late 70's/early 80's, Jeff & Debra ran it when I was there, they moved to manage Standard Of England & I went with them. Mam & My Wife Sue also did their stint behind Top Pub bar. I lived in one of those terraced houses across the road...
