  1. It is going to be a bl**dy awful two weeks here. Week 1. The Tour Down Under. A cycle race that takes competitors around the metro and near country areas of Adelaide. The real problem it brings out MAMIL's (Middle aged men in lycra) who try and emulate the pros by riding the routes a few days in advance. They clog up the roads and the local coffee shops ordering their Grande, double shot skinny latte made from Tibetan yak milk, garnished with orange peel and cinnamon with a shot of hazelnut syrup. If they continue to ignore all road rules, stop/give way signs and traffic lights I might w

  2. Whilst searching through some old books and papers, I rediscovered my autograph book from 1964. It was a Christmas present that year from some friends. Looking through it, I see that it was signed by every teacher by whom I was taught at Berridge and by some who escaped that dubious pleasure! One lady whom I've long been interested in finding out about was Miss Smith who taught the final infant year. She taught me and my sister before me, along with countless others. A tough lady, Miss Smith. I've already researched Miss Smith, the infants' head teacher but didn't know

  3. I’ve got an exercise bike. Anymore than five minutes and I’m bored rigid. Better to cycle down the lane and risk being hit by a tractor.

  4. OZ's post about immigration reminded me in ' 67 that I was thinking of going to work in US. On making enquiries I learned some strange things. As a hairdresser I could work in the states but first of all I had to have a visa, I couldn't get one because I hadn't a job lined up.Applying for a job was refused because I hadn't got a visa, I couldn't get a visa because I didn't have a job. So frustrated at the end I gave up going round in circles.

I'm sure when we get there they won't know what's hit them, just a minute remember you are getting on in years, your not 20 any more (I wish) rewind When I arrive in Dublin it will take me a while to get my legs moving, maybe have a nod on the plane, drink well! just a small one, how we change, never mind my daughter in law and myself will still have a good time. Will try not to post for a few day's as it is Tradfeast drinks and eats with lots of Irish Folk Music.

  7. I had a similar problem with Australia, no job no Visa. So what I did after I'd filed the paperwork was subscribe to the Sydney Morning Herald and the Melbourne Age newspapers. I went through all the major companies in the employment ads. I eventually landed a job in Sydney with Joy Manufacturing, but the Consulate informed me country areas of Victoria or Tasmania. Back to the drawing board!! I eventually landed a job with Renison Bell as a mining electrician at their huge tin mine in Tasmania. I had to have a medical and x ray at my own expense, then sent everything off to th

  8. Jill that's what I've been thinking right from the start. I get the impression she's a social climber, she seems to be controlling him. " Look everyone, look where I've got myself". Hope I'm wrong but don't think so.

  11. I'm going to do everything I'm told. I'm fed up with inactivity and intend to get back to full fitness ASAP. My recent blood test said 'no problems' so that's encouraging!

  12. I gave Ozt' a like, not because I agreed with any of it - but it was amusing After rowing over 10 miles a day for 19 days it was rest day yesterday. Rowed 8 miles this morning and will do another 8 or so this afternoon depending on what's on't telly. Rowing on an indoor trainer in front of the TV is a great way of keeping fit. Has anyone tried one of those little pedal machines designed for couch potatoes?

  13. Ozt's notes about that tennis tournament puts me in mind of that execrable film festival that takes place near here in the middle of May followed immediately by a stupid car race a few kilometres along the coast.

  14. The last time I flew to Dublin the airport was fogged in so we diverted to Shannon on the west coast. I had a few drinks as I assumed we would be bussed back to Dublin. In typical Irish fashion the bus never appeared so we hired a car and I was nominated to drive all the way across the country. It was dark and the fog was thick so it was a nightmare journey. We eventually made it sustained by the multiple drinks I had consumed on the plane. We hired a taxi on the outskirts of Dublin and followed it to our hotel.

  16. @ Brew, not so much the "rat pack" syndrome, I do use older instruments when accuracy isn't that important. I have an ex military Grid Dip Oscillator, all tubes! It together with an accurate freq counter make a handsome couple when checking resonant circuits for the point of resonance. I proved an HF tube amplifier tank circuit was working correctly on 15 metres with that pair, proving the problem wasn't on the output, but a failed cap on the tuned input. I like meters over digital readouts too, maybe it's the old electrician in me.
