  1. Dear Hearts, How very kind some of you are. At least three kind postings have flooded in and I’m overwhelmed (do we know of anyone, anywhere that has ever been underwhelmed – and what is a whelm anyway?) with the encouragement and warmth of your responses. Perhaps it would help if I nailed my colours more firmly to the mast. Although I should add that I don’t always remember to separate my colours from my delicates (steady!) and whites. Of course this in turn produces some rather patchy dyeing on various garments, but with the added benefit of what would appear,

  3. Talking of 78s, I can remember as a new teenager going up to Nottingham castle with my next door mate and his two older sisters, sitting on the lawns. We took a big wind up gramophone and old records, giving me the responsibility of carrying the spare needles. Sunny day and listening to Dickie Valentine, David Whifield and Frankie Laine etc., perfection, even though a bit naive.

  5. The wind and rain has dropped for now so today we got the cycles out and rode a 10miler on the muddy tow paths, just to keep us in action. So easy to get out of the habit in the winter. Had to do a bit of scrambling under and around a fallen tree, dragging the bikes along the bank as we crawled. Felt just like a kid again, covered in muck. Yesterday we joined our local gym, £10 a month, concessions for oldies, a bit more than a gym really, its title is 'Leasure Village', going for an induction at 1pm. See how we go? I much prefer being on mi bike in the open air, on the towpaths o

  6. We used to take a Dansette into Woodthorpe Park and once, when someone got fed up with a certain 78, they skimmed it down the steep slope like a frisbee (although I don't think they'd been invented yet) why I should remember that, I just don't know..

  7. So did I know him, also George Akins but knew his brother Dennis better, a long long time ago. Pat Radford did a grand job organising the annual Market Traders Ball at the Albany, we had some great nights there in the 80s.

  12. Great reading, thanks. You must have been at the EMEB when Mr. Lightbown (spelling?) was the boss. I worked for them first in Talbot street doing installations. Later out of Bilboro' doing appliance repairs. Really enjoyed my time there before emigrating. You've brought back some good memories, Trevor. I hope you stay with our merry crowd.

  15. Taking care of that fish tank would raise it again BK. Re. fuses in 13 amp plugs. It seems dangerous to me to bypass that fuse in any way, because in my day the whole ring main system was backed up by a thirty amp fuse or breaker. Not great for lamp cords!

  20. We have always had nets up at all windows, the ones we have are in the Jardinieres style, very pretty with flowers at the bottom and small leaves going up to the top.and almost pure white. They were from Yarnolds and cost quite a lot at the time. It paid off because they have lasted well. We, over the years have decorated and chosen furniture in quite an old fashioned style, with a few modern bits thrown in. It seems to work. We even have the little cotton and lace protecters on the two sofas to help keep them clean. The new window is now in the bedroom (the dog

  21. Maybe that's the bulletproof / bomb proof glass that's distorting the colour. I've got nets on my upstairs front windows and front door. I did have Vertical blinds when I first moved in the house but got rid of them after about 10 years, horrible things to keep clean. Net curtains are so easy to wash.
