  1. Bitty sort of day really.. Had a salady type lunch of beetroot, tomatoes and cold roast beef... Then wandered out on a few errands. Dumped a dead PC monitor at the local 'waste disposal facility'. Then round to Tesco for a drop of booze. Also checked out their stock of Hand Cleansing Gel. There wasn't any. I have an idea about that. At a pinch I reckon you could use Methylated spirit mixed maybe 1:3 with water and a spot of liquid soap. Maybe not so pleasant but would do the job if you are out and about and desperate. I reckon that clear 'De-Natured' alcohol th

  3. The census enumerators were nothing if not inventive with their spelling. My gt grandfather, Sam Ward, is usually shown as being born in either Wella, Whella, Wheller or Weller. Where was he born? WELLOW! It was actually Ompton but I don't like to be too pedantic!

  4. Every time I go to Costco I buy toilet rolls, we had 90 stashed away the other week. Saw this on Faceache recently, think it was aimed at me ...........

  5. Priti Patel. A dreadful woman with no discernible talent, who has been sacked before for 'freelancing' on Foreign policy. I'm afraid the present Government is really a collection of 'barrel scrapings.'

  6. Cooper and Roe had an air raid siren on the roof which they used to test well into the 1950's. My grandma lived on Cropwell Green, up Linnell Street opposite the factory, and as a 5 year old, when the bloody thing went off it used to scare me to death!!

  7. That area is traceable on maps from the 1870s. Station Lane (probably should be Street) is the present-day Station Road; and Netherfield Lane is virtually the present-day Victoria Road......and those two locations have the Fox & Hounds pub at their centre. And finally; there is a Moor Street nearby. When Affer Gorritt returns, he needs to tell us the time period in question.

  9. We were stuck once trying to find a Birch relative in the Manchester area. Had to hire a researcher in the end and she found the family under the name Brick! Apparently the census was outsourced to India to be transcribed, and a lot of things got lost in translation.

  10. Another funeral yesterday Actually we quite enjoyed it No disrespect for the lovely deceased lady who probably also enjoyed the occasion. It was our first one at the Sherwood Forest Crem. What a lovely peaceful place! As well as seeing some old friends we saw our two God children for the first time in 30 years. They are the same age as our two and between them have 4 children and five grand children! It was certainly a friends united day and we have agreed to meet up again soon. We will be meeting at a cycling caff that we used as teenage cyclists sixty odd years ago. On the way t

  11. Thanks again for the newspaper database link DavidW. I have stumbled across some fab information so far. It turns out that the Eagle Works were the first port of call for many First World War Belgian refugees. Really interesting stuff, and at present I have high hopes there might be a photograph out there somewhere.

  12. Everything looks normal here, Nonna. I did a mega, mainly moggie, shop this morning. Nothing unusual, no shortages, no silly face masks, people going about their daily chores. Newspaper headlines screaming doom and gloom. This COULD happen, that MIGHT happen. Usual rubbish, "Henny Penny, the sky is falling in. We must go and tell the King!" Keep calm and carry on. You won't go far wrong.
