  1. Like Lizzie Ms husband I well remember free school meals in the 60s & 60s. A dinner ticket with “FREE” stamped across the ticket & even sitting on separate tables in the dining room away from the kids who paid for their dinner. A few years ago I met a young single mum who had two kids & we worked out that she was better off on benefits than I was working full time, hard to believe but true. I continued to work not wanting my kids to be stigmatised like I was. When my kids were at school in the 80s they told me they were among the few kids who paid for school dinners, how times

  2. When working for the Coop in Security in several areas of Nottingham.........many was the time i was almost reduced to tears to see children as young as four stealing food because they were hungry........one little 4 year old girl at Strelley Coop will forever be etched in my mind.... Tiny thing came in alone,,,summers day...wearing Wellingtons..and an old fashioned 'Frock'' blonde Hair all matted and a dirty face.......she helped herself to Crisps and chocolate.... Bad Parents no doubt.....a minority certainly....but children should never suffer..no matter wh

  4. I was in Top Valley Tesco the other week, walking out past the big container which is there for donations for the needy amongst us. There was a well-dressed woman, having obviously paid for a trolley load of groceries, taking stuff out of the ‘donations box’ and placing it into her full trolley. I was astounded but I walked by and said nothing as I didn’t want a confrontation. . There are thousands needing help through no fault of their own and many thousands more not helping themselves by not changing their lifestyles, Sky TV, cigarettes and alcohol are not essentials but many of those str

  7. But if you are a single parent.. for whatever reason.. and you are unemployed.. for whatever reason.. which is hardly surprising in the current circumstances.. and you have been left homeless... because without a job you cannot pay rent...and.. and.. peple here are basically saying that Kids should starve. I find that quite sickening.

  8. I knew you'd done that by your previous posts, CF, so fair play to you. Like Brew, though, I think the people you mention in your original post are in the minority and its never the fault of the child. A hungry child needs food

  9. Being a single parent myself a few years ago struggling to bring up my two kids was very difficult in many ways including financial issues. I never claimed benefits just worked full time & a second job at the weekends to make ends meet. Before anyone suggests I have an axe to grind, well I don't, I brought my kids up through my own endeavours with no handouts. Both kids grew up with decent jobs nowadays, hard work pays. Many young parents don't have a clue, usually brought up on benefits as children themselves. The cycle of benefit dependence needs to be broken.

  10. I remember playing around the old Sherwood station back in the ‘50s and walking through the tunnel under Woodborough Rd. The slope down the hill towards the woods was great for sledging down in the winter. There was a very good pitch and putt course on the opposite slope of the park which I haven’t played on for about 25 years. Woe betide you if you were caught sledging down there!

  12. A long way from U.K. But similar situations of not enough money and starving children. Things had the same character but very differently in Sicily. My husband is the eldest of 7. In a tiny village outside Palermo with the Mafia in near attendance things really were tight. His father had no employment , his mother did some part time work at the convent. She and her mil could make a meal out of very little to feed her children. ( things which I have learned from her) His grandmother had a shop and all she could spare was some flour and a little bit of pasta. They would walk round the fie

  13. What Catfan posted was a massive generalisation.. supported by zero evidence. He did the same years back by implying that everybody who lives in 'Aspleh' is a crook. Such simplistic generalisation is completely unhelpful..and it is harmful in that it further fosters untruths and prejudice. Even if it was meant as a joke. I don't think these issues are funny. Somewhere in this country tonight there are many kids who are hungry, cold or scared. It is NEVER their fault. It isn't always their parent's fault. A woman was shown on TV explaining her sadness at the state of the 'f

  14. There are exceptions to every rule. I've said on here before, growing up as I did, nothing exceptional, but it gave me a hatred of poverty and hunger and like your husband worked my $£%! off to get out. I still say we can't punish the many because of a few, as a society we should be better than that.

  15. And you should be quite rightly proud of doing so however times and situations change. True the benefits roundabout can self perpetuate and there are those who really know how to work the system. But we mustn't throw the baby out with the bath water. Punishing the genuine cases, which I'm convinced are the majority, to deny the greedy and profane is just plain wrong.

  16. Cancel the SKY subscription. Don't pay £50 per month for the latest iPhone & give up the fags. That way if you have kids you will be able to feed them yourself without expecting anyone else to pay to feed them for you.

  17. Then there was the railway line, mentioned on here a long time ago, that I assume ran from Daybrook Station, along the side of Arnold Park, under a bridge at the top of Arnot Hill Road and along the back of Sandfield Road and through a tunnel at the bottom of Greendale Road which in my childhood was just a track, not an asphalted road and there were no houses built down there, beyond the tunnel I have no idea where it went to. I used to go and play down that track, on the embankment, picking bundles of pussy willows for my mummy and we would see how brave we were by creeping into and along th

  20. That photo is taken from the park - it is the small tunnel going under Woodthorpe Drive! CT The information on the link you posted Is not unite accurate. I suppose I’m being a bit picky but if the train coming out of Ashwell tunnel is going into Sherwood station it was going in the wrong direction to get to Daybrook, Bulwell etc as stated! It looks to me that it was coming out of Ashwell tunnel towards Woodthorpe Drive (where Thomas the Tank engine is now). The train in the link photo would already have been through Sherwood station before entering Ashwell tunnel. I saw the

If owt has been done, it was without the knowledge of anyone here....and that wouldn't surprise me. I'm genuinely amazed that it still works at all.

  23. In the course of my work in recent years, I've organised food parcels for people who requested them. Hard working volunteers at various charities spend their time packing the parcels with items which cater to that family's needs. The recipients, who live locally, need to take a letter from social services to the food bank in order to collect the food. I lost count of the times I was told they weren't coming to collect it. Could I scan it and email it to their smartphone. Could someone bring it to the house? They wouldn't be in but the children would. On their own. Yes, Ben, childr

I'm a bit rusty in English expressions) the like icon I see working, just when I thought of going back to the old school display. Haven't tried anything else yet and don't want to. I've had a headache since yesterday afternoon and can't get rid of it. When I've finished breakfast I'm going for a walk. It's freezing cold and looks like more snow is on its way. As Loppy says see ya'll later.

  27. Sorry OZ but i must just post a little more on PD. "Parkinson's is when your dopamine cells start dying ot have died. This is the chemical messenger in your brain, that controlls movement. When you first see your nurse she will start you on a very low dose of medication, increasing them when needed. drugs for pd act as a subsititue for dopamine by simulating parts of the brain where dopamine is lost. these dtugs do have side effects (which I will tak about later) as not every one gets them. There is not a real test for Parkinson's as yet there is no cure just

  28. So today.. or yesterday as it is now.. I decided to find a decently long.. but 'flat' walk. So.. I walked out of our 'development'.. essentially downhill... along Rainford Road ( I will provide a map later..) Over Gores Bridge, to Red Cat Lane . Right off Red Cat onto a public footpath to Rainford Brook Farm, and then via a bit of a wobble to Red Barn Farm..which leads onto Red Barn Lane. Red Barn Lane has some beautiful houses. Some are extended..developed old Farmhouses..some are new...ish.. Old buildings typically date from 1600s to 1700s. It's an interesting area. Anyway.. I

  31. As usual you get the wrong message.. I sometimes almost think you do it on purpose. I am not interested in jumping any queue, I did not rant and moan. I sent in a perfectly polite and reasonable message asking for the info on the GP website to be updated.. as promised. I did this because many people..me included.. would like to know where things are up to. I don't think that is unreasonable... especially when that is exactly what was promised. And as I stated yesterday..it might be coincidence.. but since I contacted my GP Surgery FIVE updates have appeared on their site..

  32. I were listening to an article on our local news recently and listening to this woman bitterly complaining what was in her box delivery. No sign of gratitude that somebody had taken the time to assemble and deliver the goods. You could see behind her, the state of the "garden", car engine, fridge, broken chair etc. Sadly, this is the image presented to us mere mortals.

  34. There are people like that CF and we've all seen them but I suspect they are a minority. I simply think it wrong that ordinary folk are in such dire straits, probably through no fault of their own, they need assistance to feed themselves. Ignoring the political conspiracy bit DJ360 is right to think the comapany are well and truly extracting the urine and trying to screw the public purse for all they can, sadly there seems to be litttle to no checks or balance by the powers that be to monitor them.

  35. LL, Nice to know you're still there and battling with the technology. There are a number of people whose computer/tablet/phone won't function correctly since the update, and it seems there's no-one around who can solve the problem or do anything about it. If I could I would, but I've given up trying.

  36. Eye-up Y'all I am on my laptop so thought I would just say Hi. I am having all the same issues on my Ipad that Nonna mentioned. It is an old version of Ios 9.4 to be exact, but my contention is that this should not affect my interaction with a website to the extent that I cannot even post. It doesn't with any other I use. That is why you are not hearing much from me I almost always use the Ipad each day and I'm not buying another right now. I find with the Ipad that if I switch the theme from 'Old school' to 'default' the update function at th

  37. There does seem to be more potholes around than usual at the moment. It’s murder round here on the country roads. Not long back Notts CC were showing off a new pothole repair machine which did the complete job and I did see it twice round here. The repairs were excellent and have lasted. Whether they bought it or if it was on trial I don’t know. The traditional idea of putting a bit of tarmac in and thumping it down doesn’t last. Surely modern epoxy materials and proper hole preparation should do the job.

  39. I am still waiting for another new right shoulder, I have been waiting 2 years and had to postpone it twice . First time to have a kidney removed the second time my choice with personal problems and also the corona virus risk. The Consultant said I had made the right choice. Hopefully it will be carried out soon after April. Being right handed beside the continual pain I am unable to carry out many tasks, the upside is that it means no more washing and drying pots, I drop too many and no other housework. What ever the situation there is always an upside so stay positive.

  41. The bride in this photo passed away in her sleep yesterday, aged 91. She’d been in a local care home for around 10 years suffering from dementia. She was my aunt and I’m the little bridesmaid, I was 5 years old! I haven’t seen her all the time she was in the home as she didn’t recognise her 4 children so she wouldn’t have known me. Very sad and frankly rather frightening.

To save blushes, a name has been tweaked …… In my younger days, I had the immense pleasure to be the object of the affections of a stunning young lady, whose parents ran several chip shops around the city. The smallest ( yet strangely. the busiest, ) was on Bunbury Street , very close to the Bathley Streeet junction . On Bathley dwelt a flamboyant character we shall name Marmaduke, ( guess who ) , who was one of the regular clientele. I distinctly recall our first encounter.... " Well helleeeew honky tonk !...... cooed Marmaduke. " Whah ?...……...stammered yours truly
