  1. I strongly suggest anyone thinking of 'Adopting'' a Kitten don;t..... Have two instead.........Babs and Syd are giving us so much pleasure in these 'Lockdown' times..........they playfight a few times a day and their leaping is so funny........they chew each other and if one gets too rough they apologise by licking each other..........they are brother and sister and nearly died together up in Hartlepool when they were under a Garden shed after being born for 3 weeks...... They obviously love us now and each other and spend hours grooming each other,,,

  3. Gem, I just want you to know that I am feeling for you as you grieve the passing of your mum. It was good that you were with her to the end, though. You can take comfort that you did all you could for her (and your Auntie) and, as Jill said, you have all your memories .... my situation was very similar to yours and I know I think about my mum every day even though she died in 1997. She lived with us for 16 years before she died and I feel very privileged that we were able to care for her until her passing. Hold on to the good memories, Gem xx

  4. Thought i'd put this on this thread instead of the boxing one....it suits because the White Horse was for many years the home of Radford boys boxing club......used to drop one of my sons off there to do his training........also worth mentioning are the numerous young Amateurs that went on to become Champions in the Pro game,,,,one who never gets a mention was Roy Smith who became British Cruiserweight champion in about 87 or 88...he was managed by another Nottingham ex champion Wally Swift..... The club was run by the Smith family...yesterday on Facebook i was

  11. Talking of Winwood Heights, I remember the afore mentioned American Auto garage as being same side as White Horse a couple of buildings back, as Phil said where the flats are now. But may have been later than 1965. https://www.google.co.uk/maps/@52.9555101,-1.1822268,3a,75y,124.94h,87.73t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sQyW57ijYYerr9gjqh1tLMw!2e0!7i16384!8i8192 Probably where the hoardings were in 1949

  12. Not sure how this thread turned into Radford, but the chippy next to the pub had seating down stairs for sure. Ate there a few times on my lunch hour.

  14. Beekay, Sorry got the wrong opposite, I was thinking across from the pub frontage on Ilkeston Road. Glover's Oils was in a dilapidated old building, the owner's son was Jeremy Glover a well known national hunt jockey. The chippy was very good a regular haunt for us after a night out in Ilkeston, Mansfield or sometimes The Festival.

  15. Morning Dave, in reply, not quite sure whose coal yard it was. I assumed it belonged to the gasworks. It was just round the corner on Faraday rd.,on the opposite side to the White Horse, probably 50-100yards down. Once fetched a bag of coke, after staying off school and while waiting for a 39 trolley, who should pass me on his bike, but our class teacher, Jim Sullivan !! Incidentally, there was a bloody lovely chip shop next door to the 'Hoss.

  16. You're more than welcome. You're correct about the gasometer, although it was over the bridge, on Triumph road, can't remember if there were two. I do remember opposite this pub, there was a place where you could buy coke or coal. I often used to go there and buy a 28lb bag of coke when I was about 12/13, this would be about 1956. When I was a bit older and we had moved to that area from a slum clearance up Denman street, I used to drink in that pub. This would be about 1961, it was either that pub or the Midland hotel, (just over the bridge). They a lovely crowd in the "White Hoss", I us

  18. Wise words, Ben! Far better to adopt two litter mates than one kitten and then introduce another cat later on. Just as with people, the introduction of another cat to an established number can change the dynamics completely. It's not always possible but if someone knows they want more than one moggie, litter mates is the best solution. As to Syd and Babs, they're very lucky Moggies!

  20. Dear Gem, I am so sorry to read about your mum and so soon after your auntie. There aren't any words to help at such a time, except to say that without you, your love and care, her life would have been much the poorer. In a couple of weeks, it will be eleven years since the passing of my mum and I know how you will be feeling at the moment. However, I always say that you can't lose your mum. She's with you from the moment of conception and if, like you and I, mum is one of the most wonderful, she never leaves! Not everyone is as lucky as we have been, to have a wonde

  23. You do me a disservice Col, of course it has occurred to me, not only that I have argued for it on many occasions in my career. Nevertheless new ways, new technology need to be tried and tested. Some will work some won’t but unless we try how will we know? Changes in the organisation can be as beneficial as change in technology. I do not argue they can’t be disastrous, only that we need change if we are to progress. It all comes down to that old thing we call hindsight. I did not mention the motivation for change but in the case of the CS it seemed to be to make improvements and in

  24. Not really a subject for this thread but. Even if I were a conservative.. which I'm not.. I would not vote for this lot again because Johnson sacked or alienated anything resembing talent in his party..over Brexit...which is why the likes of Williamson are tolerated, Patel 'rehabilitated' and Gove kept at a safe distance.
