  3. After my various run ins with the gigantic Nottingham spiders (Big Bertha, Gigantic Gertie) I realised as I was sweeping my side room (where they had their tenants agreement) that I hadn’t seen any for a long time. I did become a bit more cautious as I was moving stuff after that. Then I saw movement as something ran up the wall. Yes it was a spider but a “normal” sized one, not hairy, no dripping fangs, wasn’t built like Mike Tyson and it was running away from me and not towards as the others seemed to do. It eventually stopped and pretended it wasn’t really there, as they do, so I finishe

  4. There have been some outstanding Poets Laureate but this guy just doesn’t do it for me. I like poetry to rhyme in that it shows a certain skill in finding an apposite ensuing line. Prose or blank verse requires much less ability.

  6. Well after being indoors for 5 months (since having em) and apart from Syds 2 day adventure....we left the back door open and sat on the garden ....Syd made no attempt to come out...think he was put off by his last time when he squeezed thru a window........ However Babs ..after much trepidation did venture out and rolled on her back at Donna's feet...........Syd stood in the doorway just looking at her...as if to say ''you must be mad'' Thought Syd would be first out as he's the most adventurous...but no..he was having none of it........going to leave the do

  7. Having spent the last years of my working life alternating between inside the public service and in the private sector her in South Australia I feel that I must comment on this post. In my time in the public service there was serious knowledge and deep expertise in the department I worked in. Admittedly there were some "time servers" too that should have been weeded out years ago but at the time tenure prevented that. What went wrong with the public service was its' politicisation when heads of department were appointed on their allegiance to the governing political party not on the capac

  9. The commentator doing the Duke’s funeral didn’t do his homework when he mentioned straight afterwards the powerful passage from ECCLESIASTES. It was actually from ECCLESIASTICUS which is in the Apocrypha, not the Old Testament. Not that it matters but if you’re doing an important job like that you should really get your facts right..: I think someone must have put him right because when he was chatting later with 2 other commentators, he didn’t say where the reading was taken from. However, it’s not as bad as my auntie’s funeral where the vicar repeatedly called her by the wr

  10. All of the funerals I’ve attended in recent years have been secular. We’re not even having one. Straight to Crem and no ham tea are our specific instructions.

  12. Not intentional Jim and I have said many times that I do not excuse wrong doing in Govt. by any party. However, I'd also point out that Ecclestone's £1m donation to Labour was a donation to the party, not a personal bribe to Blair.. who I suspect had no personal need for another 'mil' even back then. Still wrong.. but .. Also.. it seems to me that Hoon..Caborn et al.. were rank amateurs compared to the current mob... though tht's no excuse. Again though.. not even a donation to the party.. but a purely personal gain. In other words.. rank corruption. Payment for favours ba

  13. As an aside.. In my capacity as a Careers Adviser I once went on a visit to a company in the Newton Le Willows/Earlestown area of St Helens. I recall it was in part of what used to be the 'Vulcan Foundry'..which way back, made many steam locomotives. There was an Italian owned company in there..which made very long ovens..which would take in dough at one end..and spit out cooked biscuits at the other.. But..and more interesting to me.. another section made 'dies' for all sorts of food products. So.. there were..as I recall.. metal moulds or dies for assorted well known sweets..
