  1. I listen to "Always" and I'm thinking of fabulous Mrs WW, from happy courting days to the sweetest honeymoon, through all the years, all the sunsets, all the sunrises, all the hard times, near disasters, great times, son off to uni, daughter's marriage to a good man, all the travels in cars, boats, planes, all the beaches and all the playing in the sea with the children, all the playing by the sea with grandchildren, tears and laughter. Life's tapestry. Sitting in the garden sharing a drink with my wife in the slow dusk of a spring evening, the quietness conveying a myriad unspoken

  3. Whilst working in in Detroit I took the opportunity to visit Hitsville USA, the Motown Museum. I have to say it was fanbloodytastic. It tells the story from the early days of Tamla. They had Michael Jackson's jewelled glove on display.

  4. What's all this talk about buying men's underwear? I bought a pair of second hand u/pants 20 years ago and they're still going strong! Wash 'em once a week, though, whether they need it or not. One day they'll be passed on to my lad.

  5. Been a while since I visited, and wondered if anyone has memories of the Locarno? First went in 1960, and was smitten! The music then-when I first went in with a couple of mates, the song Runaway by Del Shannon was playing. After that went every Sat, some Sundays, Bank Holidays. Remember the twelve hour Rock Around The Clock sessions? Every hour, on came the Bill Haley and The Comets song. Jiving----great stuff. Girl watching---even better. Sadly, when the locomotion and the twist dominated i lost interest. Having said that the Locarno was the highlight of the week---and no booze. But there w

  6. I only ever went in two dance halls, the Palais and Colmans and then only once each. My dancing is frightening sight and people tend to hide the horses and lock up their daughters. Tried the Dungeon once but was turned away by the doorman, it was the first time I heard the word gay used in a different context. A friend and I were regulars in the Bodega though I can't ever remember any dancing in there. As for fighting the last time was at the Chateau one New Years Eve. Some drunk nocked my wife down on the dance floor then got abusive. A plain clothes policeman sto

  11. In the early 1970s we used to go to The Black Boy Inn which I think was at the top of Queen St? We always went on a Friday night cos you got chicken & chips in a basket for 7s 6d and I still have a receipt! but with that you got the disco thrown in. A small dance floor but it was a lovely place to be and the DJ was female - she was great. Her choice of music was fantastic but I have no idea what her name was. Edit: actually I think her name may have been Maggie?

  13. I've said before I don't have a lot of info about Nottingham. I wasnt born there and spent a lot of years living in Italy. I love seeing photos of how it was and is in the years I wasnt there. My thoughts on that are if you miss Ians posts why not post something interesting about Nottingham yourselves instead of grumbling hes not here. Yes the site was indeed a " must look today" but like everything else things go pear shaped, people lose interest when they dont get enough likes, members have lost their computers or have moved away. Yes I know internet is available everywhere but

  16. I agree with you both. But anyone who thinks that the 'working class' is no longer relevant is missing the point by a country mile. Of course the old style, easily identified groups such as miners, dockers, steelworkers etc.. are now dispersed.. but the vast bulk of the population is still entirely dependent upon a wage...and often only a couple of wage packets away from homelessness. There's your 'political identity' PP. Yet they are still ruled over by those who are not wage dependent..and in most cases don't care. If and when that ever changes.. I might stop f

  17. Spike - in my Arnold boyhood days (1950s) we used to play in a stream that was, for some reason, called 'the dyke' and 'swimming' in there, among other things, were 'toe-bitters. I believe this stream was the Daybook, or a tributary of it. It sourced up near what is now Howbeck Road, ran under Coppice Rd., parallel with Bentwell Ave, under Bonnington Drive and eventually into the pond on Arnot Hill Park. We would spend hours playing in the area between Bonnington Drive and Coppice Rd! Before the development of the John Lewis building on Brookfield Rd and all the housing estates, we could walk
