  1. In reply to SG, (won't quote,it's too long). Maybe it's just me, but I cannot, for the life of me understand this obsession with, "desperate to get abroad for a holiday". What's wrong with England? I realise and understand that people want to broaden their horizons and visit other cultures, but I've heard folks say they are "desperate". Surely nobody's that desperate.

  2. I think I have a different view to many, on what constitutes a holiday. At its most basic, I would not be seen dead fighting for a parking spec in Blackpool or anywhere else on a Bank Holiday. I leave that to others and try to enjoy the relative peace in my garden. I like the weather and the sea in the Med and similar places.. but I can't be doing with crowded beaches.. people who are rat arsed 24/7 for a fortnight.. and especially people who are legless before they board the plane out and spend the duration of the flight being anti social. I'm basically just an old m

  3. Whilst it is good that we are now slowly relaxing the lockdown rules there are two that I am not sure about. One is the relaxation of wearing masks in schools. There has been an outbreak in a school in Long Eaton of 100 cases amongst pupils and staff causing the closedown of the school for a while. I believe this was the “Indian” strain which is more contagious. This week I have started invigilating at my local school again (so nice to be doing something “normal” for a change) wearing a mask even though I am scribing on a one to one basis which does not interfere with it at all. 4. On the corner of Norton Street and Hartley Road was a large building which, I believe, was a children's home. The walls around it were constructed of sandstone which, in places, was badly eroded and honeycombed. To me, as a very young child in my pushchair, it looked like the inside of a Crunchie bar and I thought it was edible! I invariably asked my mum, as we passed, to let me take a bite. She'd tell me not to be so silly and give me that nonplussed look that often came my way when I was little! Needless to say, it has now all gone. Maybe someone ate it!

  7. Try to get as much exercise as you can, a daily walk if nothing else, stopping in all day isn't good. I've given myself a set get up time and bedtime, quite a luxury after years of shiftwork, I try to have a decent walk in the nature reserve everyday, it's vital for health. Do you have a dog? Or friends with one? They are an excellent incentive to get you out there if the weather isn't special. Try not to be in too much of a rush to do things, you'll have far more time but probably a lower income so you can't persue hobbies perhaps at the speed you might want to! What sort of things are

  14. Used to know a couple who thought that, unless you traveled a very long way or flown, then it wasn't a 'proper holiday'. But they always trawled the papers for £9.50 breaks, usually in the Sun. Got bugger all in the way of refinements, but eh, they were cheap.

  15. We’ve not been abroad for a holiday in years. There’s so many places in Britain we’ve yet to visit without the hassle of airports and the boredom of flying. I dislike flying when I’m not at the controls. Some of the people who learnt to fly at the same time as I did went on to become airline pilots and, quite frankly, I would be scared to fly with them! We had a favourite place on the Lizard, near to the Helford river where we rented a cottage and another place on the west coast of Scotland where we stayed regularly. We haven’t been away for a holiday in seven years. Quite honestly it’s so ple

  16. We’ve always enjoyed flying off on vacation and in fact we should have been flying to Seattle today, booked last November when we assumed all this would have been over weeks/months ago. So that’s the third overseas trip we’ve had cancelled in the past 14 months. I’ve got used to being stuck at home to be honest, haven’t got any enthusiasm to consider any trips in the near future. We’ve got a trip out today though, up to a funeral at Wilford Hill, not a Covid death I hasten to point out.

  17. Date on the bottom of the above map , latest revision 1964, published 1966. Another map, updated to 1950, not sure what's going on with the layout on Brook Ave, seems to be artistic licence or from a plan that didn't quite happen This one is updated to 1944 but not published untill 1950, by which time the version above had been updated. This earlier layout would suggest the Kiddier Rd area was going to be Council houses of the same style as built around the other sides of the cross roads, maybe changed at the last minute to prefabs.

  18. I listen to "Always" and I'm thinking of fabulous Mrs WW, from happy courting days to the sweetest honeymoon, through all the years, all the sunsets, all the sunrises, all the hard times, near disasters, great times, son off to uni, daughter's marriage to a good man, all the travels in cars, boats, planes, all the beaches and all the playing in the sea with the children, all the playing by the sea with grandchildren, tears and laughter. Life's tapestry. Sitting in the garden sharing a drink with my wife in the slow dusk of a spring evening, the quietness conveying a myriad unspoken

  19. Yes and they were always liked but the problem was there were streams and streams one after the other that if anyone was following they didnt give a chance to post after scrolling down and down and down. There were too many at one time. But Catfan you are right Fly did leave on his own account but what happened before to make him leave? You dont have to think too hard because you stopped posting afterwards and for a while we didn't see you. Its only recently that you've been posting again.

  20. Whoops !!, 7 shots HSR. I like it. I must be mistaken, I always thought this was a Social group. On the two occasions I came up to Nottingham to attend meet ups, nobody ever mentioned Nottingham or owt to do with Nottingham. They just made me welcome and we then just gassed about anything and everything (when not eating).

  21. I'm sorry I am not posting much just lately, but have been through a few months of ill health. First Covid 19 that knocked us out for two months and now Pancreatitis, which is still very painful. It has taken my fun away for a while, but going to phone the Docs again on Monday and find out if I am going in the right direction. I still love Nottstalgia, When I left Nottingham in 1966, it was still the old City, but shortly afterwards, the demolition started. Places I had known all my life, just disappeared and because we started married life with very little dosh, there was no car for a f

  22. A couple of the things about Nottstalgia I'm most grateful for is the variety of things I've learned and hopefully the many new friends I've made. I realise that some I've never met but it's like having a pen friend of sorts. I would never have written to anybody, apart from the odd birthday or Christmas card. How else would I get contacts in Australia, Canada, USA, France and Italy and any other place I've missed. You get a great buzz when somebody responds to your posts and you can soon build up a rapport with folks who you could walk by in the street and never know. I love the friendly bant
