  1. My father's stock reply to my questions about where he was going was always, "Long Eaton!" A slight variation on the man with a dog retort cropped up when I got a bee in my bonnet about possibly being adopted. A girl at school had been adopted and had no idea who her biological parents were. I thought this was wonderful, fascinating and began to wonder if I'd been adopted and my parents just hadn't told me. I must have become rather a nuisance for pestering them to tell me the truth about my origins because my mother advised me to go and look in the mirror (I was the i

  2. Where was the L-Shaped Room ? I certainly never went in it (not old enough) but I don't think anyone has mentioned its actual location. EDIT I've answered my own question, and it's come via our own Moz and his excellent 'Scene before in Nottingham' L-Shaped room was on Goldsmith Street, and there's a photo here if you scroll down. https://scenebeforeinnottingham.wordpress.com/home/places/coffee-bars/

Next one will be be New Year's day, (making sure no silly bugger falls through any ice that might be about). Met some lovely people while driving my shuttle service. Lots of friendly banter. It's sunny today. Life is good !!

  6. Bought my first new car in 1979 from Hooleys. Ford Escort MkII, special edition with 1600cc engine, twin choke weber and 4-branch manifold. It was quite quick despite not being badged as sport or anything. A few years later it started misfiring while thrashing it down the M1. After limping home, I stripped it down and found one of the inlet valves had melted; looked like someone had taken a bite out of it. The valve seat was trashed as well. Fixed it on the cheap by fitting a head off a 1.6 Cortina (£10 from Atlas scrappy on Park Lane). Valves were much smaller though so it wasn't go

  12. I often saw new cars being delivered on trade plates being thrashed on the motorways. Nodoubt the new owners would drive them very carefully for the first thousand miles!

  14. Went in L Shaped Room too usually late at night . My pals were from Burton Joyce and they knew Richard Williams who at that time was a reporter for the Post and also lived in BJ. He would call in there after a late shift. He later worked for national newspapers and compered music shows on BBC. Another Burton Joyce resident was Liz Hill whose dad was running Will Hill tailors in Trinity Sq in the 60s. Always wondered what happened to her. I remember she went off to work on a kibbutz in Israel and married a DJ from the Palais whilst there (I think) but can't remember his name.

  16. Hi there, the site is technically called the Bay of Biscay for some reason! the bench was dedicated to my grandfather and grandmother born in 1902 and 1904 respectively. My grandfather set up Hooleys of Nottingham in the 20s and my father then took over. I own that little park now alongside my brother and hope to come to an agreement with the Park Estate soon to take it on and keep it open to the public (and looked after)

  17. Hi All, Just stumbled upon this. My grandfather set up Hooleys garage back in the 20s then my father took over. Would love to chat with some of you to know more about it and your experiences! I'm in my 30s so don't have many recollections beyond doing my homework in my Dad's office (there was a ships wheel outside I seem to remember that would be pushed to full power when there were sales coming in). I also remember a revolving turntable in the front of the showroom which provided me endless fun as a young boy. Its been a while since this thread was last posted to but
