  1. When I went out this morning , I thought I’m in heaven. We had a storm last night and the temperature has dropped. It was a real pleasure to walk round the market although only veg and fruit stalls there. I told you in August the towns , villages and cities go into hibernation there’s no one around. Anyway hearing from a cousin in Sicily it’s 44 degrees in Palermo and here passing the local chemist we see that the temperature was 20 degrees. It’s not going to last unfortunately as the mercury is going back up where it was. It has been raining all day so far. We really need it as we all do but

  3. I'm all excited! I'm actually going out! Hope the knee hold up. Going into Liverpool on the train to meet three old work colleagues. Only one, pretty erratic bus service through the village at the moment so I was struggling with how to get into St Helens to the rail station and on a local Facebook group asking for recommendations for Taxi firms. My neighbour spotted my post and has offered to drop me off at the station. People can be so good.

  4. We old farts have been lucky that we have lived through an era of great music. I was watching my recording of the Beach Boys 50th anniversary, yes I know it was made 20 years ago, but looking at the thousands of fans in the audience, children were enjoying the music, as we;; as their parents and grandparents. The Bee Gees , Fleetwood Mac, the vast audience of youngsters who hadn't even been born when those groups became famous, and the great music they gave us.

  6. There's no denying that Bacharach & David were fantastic songwriters and masters of their genre. However in my opinion, for what it's worth, H-D-H as part of Motown changed the face of music, introducing soul to mainstream white America and were part of the soundtrack to major world events. A sound that is still fresh today

  7. I used the Elephant Bike to ride up to the club meeting last night. Offered some members a lift home in the front basket but no takers... Cycle clips not needed with chain guard. Straw hat quite safe at my pedestrian speed I get the impression that no one on here likes the more serious cyclist - I've a good mind to don my trapeze artist gear and to visit the Nottingham lanes on my Look carbon road bike just to annoy you all At least the lycra fits - not bad for an octogenarian...

  10. Lambley is famous for its ‘dumbles.’ A dumble being a local name for a shallow dale with a stream. D.H. Lawrence is reputed to have enjoyed walking the Lambley Dumbles. Googled this for you, i hope it helps.

  11. I know bus stops aren't the most interesting subject, but I noticed this a few years ago. On Player Street in Radford, near its junction with Radford Boulevard, there's a metal panel fixed to a wall. It's obviously a bit ancient, and hasn't been much use since the late 1960s when Players pulled out of Radford. I guess it's a sort-of bus stop, but is it referring to special bus services which were put on for workers at Players? I didn't think normal NCT routes went along Player Street, so why is this thing stuck on the side of a wall, instead of being a conventional bus stop? And right

  12. Now you mention it, I agree. I was thinking of when the Horizon factory opened near Clifton Bridge, which was early 70s. I'd forgotten that some of the Radford factories lingered on for a long time after that

  13. It was 1984 that players pulled out of the factory on Radford Boulevard, and I concur with Den re them being 'works specials'. We had several at Raleigh too (If you have a look down Triumph road the re may still be one or two there too) The 'specials' were a direct link home for people who didn't have bus straight in to work , ie Ilkeston , Cotmanhay etc , we (In Carlton) didn't have one as the 72/39 did the business for us.

  14. Up until early eighties Players Radford used to have a few works buses, even at lunch time to the city centre.
