  1. You've inspired me, Oz. One of my parents' favourite songs was Dancing in the Dark (Fred Astaire). As it was a foxtrot, it was also one of their favourite dances. I've adapted it slightly... apologies to Fred! Dancing in the dark. Til the tune ends Ben's dancing in the dark. With a new friend. She met him in the cheese queue at Marsden's, dear! And it's quite clear She wanted more. Looking for a thrill. Paso doble. They tango round the till. Past the flyspray And face the bacon slicer ... to

For "Our Ben" They seek him here, they seek him there His clothes are loud, but never square It will make or break him so he's got to buy the best 'Cause he's a dedicated follower of fashion And when he does his little rounds 'Round the boutiques of Hucknall town Eagerly pursuing all the latest fads and trends 'Cause he's a dedicated follower of fashion Oh, yes, he is (oh, yes he is) Oh, yes, he is (oh, yes he is) He thinks he is a flower to be looked at And when he pulls his frilly nylon panties right up tight He feels a dedicated follower of fashion

  4. Where did 60 years go eh? Ben. 60 years ago next year since I met the first Mrs. L in beautiful downtown Nottingham as it was then. Took our photos in one of those auto photo booths in the entrance to Vic station. Aaaaah! memories. I'd do it all over again if I could.

  6. After living just outside Doncaster for 40 years before coming back home to Nottingham I remembered the city centre as it was then. Loads of shops and department stores, C&A, Chelsea Girl, Birdcage, Debenhams, the market etc. All the shoe shops on Clumber Street, Cavendish Woodhouse for furniture (I worked in their offices for a long time on Talbot Street in Talbot House and then in an annex across the road which backed onto the graveyard). It was a vibrant busy city centre. Doncaster town centre is not good, seems to be mostly clubs, pubs and fast food places. If you go in on Monday mor

  7. The whole point of the Barrister's strike is that very few of them earn a good living, and that is largely a result of deliberate cost cutting in the legal system by this Tory govt. Whilst it is true that much of the inflationary pressure is the result of Putin's aggression and the knock on effects of the pandemic, the Tories have not helped and constantly seek to appease big business and shareholders before bothering about starving kids. And of course everybody in the supply chain, from producers, to manufacturers, distributors and retailers are all free to put up their price

  8. @benjamin1945 so you were working in Mansfield just after I left that area I think. I was at Harlow Wood hospital from 1960 until September 1962 and my friends and I often went into Mansfield when we weren't on duty....

  9. Yes Ben, when I left the UK in the mid 70s it was a thriving market town. People were employed in the mines, engineering companies, hoisery and knitting factories and the shoe trade. You could get anything on the market or in the major chain shops, now a sad mess. Largely brought about by the demise of these industries, out of town shopping centres and that abomination of a ring road that ripped the heart out of the town. Sound like anywhere else you know?

  11. Don't know about Donny and 15 years since I was in Nottingham or Mansfield. Took a Google drive around Mansfield yesterday, so depressing, most of the pubs of my youth are gone or boarded up. saying nothing about the once vibrant Market and the shops, even the once beautiful art deco Co-op building looks sad and derelict.

After using the latest (free) high tec image manipulating software available to me,, Paint 3D We have an approximation of the location in todays surroundings, Bearing in mind the older image was taken at probably a couple of thousand feet and the modern Google image was taken from around 350miles up.

  14. Lenton Times has a feature on Nottingham heliport which l had never heard of. British European Airways started a helicopter service connecting Nottingham and Leicester to Birmingham, intended to be a feeder service for its international services from Birmingham. The service started on 3 July 1956 to great fanfare but ceased in November 1956, BEA citing the need to save fuel due to the Suez crisis although the service had clocked up big losses. The site was used for a time by driving instructors and for go-karting but by 1960 the City Council had realised that the heliport was redundant and all

  16. They obviously went to great expense with the facilities. After much staring I've worked out where the photo is located. The road going diagonally across the top left corner is Clifton Boulevard from Dunkirk up to Derby Road. The low-level buildings in the top left corner are now the site of the university. The large area mid-top is now QMC. The partly obscured road going horizontally across the upper-middle is Abbey Street.

  17. Football Post, Football News - Come and Get it Forest - Losing at home to Spurs is not a disaster but lack of converting chances into goals is starting to become a worry. I listened to the game on the beeb. It sounded like Kane was a bit lucky with the first goal after 5 minutes. Forest's 'keeper Henderson kept them in the game when he saved a penalty from Kane just after half time and made several other good saves. Forest applied plenty of pressure and it was only until the second Kane goal that the game seemed beyond them. I hear that Forest are looking to sign another defen
