  1. You have to get the death cert first, so that you have the actual date and place of death. When you have that, it might be worth searching the local paper for any mention, as details of funeral may be given. The Evening Post is online here, certainly for some of 1923, but I don't know whether it's complete. http://www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk/
  2. Being "in tucks" when you were laughing a lot
  3. Thanks. I've looked at the census and haven't found a Bill who seems to fit - i.e. not living in the right sort of area. I know what you mean about the names - I've got plenty of Williams, Edwards, Marys and Elizabeths. Not very original, were they?!
  4. Carni Interesting to hear you have the name Comery in your family! An older cousin, who knew my Grandad much better than I did, as I was only 9 when he died, told me his best friend's name was Bill Comery. Don't know any more about him, although as my Grandad was born in 1887, perhaps he was around the same age? My Grandad always lived in Radford and Basford, though, and he was a Plasterers labourer. Do you have anyone who might be Bill?!
  5. Unless you've got some evidence that a family member was in a workhouse at some stage, from a census or birth or death certificate, it wouldn't be practical to do a speculative search. You wouldn't know which workhouse and when! Another source worth looking at is 19th Century British Newspapers which has the Nottinghamshire Guardian and you can probably search the database from home, if you're a member of Notts Libraries, for free. See here https://www.nottinghamshire.gov.uk/learning/libraries/
  6. Dorina, middle initial H, born Nottm, married Raymond V Cox. There's an address for them, in Bristol, on 192.com, but you have to pay to view it.
  7. Just thought of another one. If something wasn't very useful or didn't work properly "It's neither use ner ornament"
  8. Haven't heard that one before, David. It's a bit strange, isn't it, although lots of these sayings were!
  9. Or, as my Mum used to say "You're like a man wi' no arms"
  10. Details are here, of the paupers graves http://webspace.webring.com/people/mw/whittakergen_notts/notts/cems/index.htm#Church
  11. Description of record holdings for the hospital are here, but don't seem to cover the date you need http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/hospitalrecords/details.asp?id=735&hospital=&town=nottingham&searchdatabase.x=37&searchdatabase.y=8
  12. That seems odd as a birth cert records where born (in the first column, I think). Are you sure he wasn't born at home? If he wasn't, whoever supplied the information at the registration of his birth didn't give a true answer, for whatever reason. Would there be any reason why they might want to hide the info? Send me a pm if you'd rather not put the information on here.
  13. Do you mean you have the birth certificate? If so, that should give place of birth. If you haven't got the actual cert, you can order it from the GRO
  14. Were his parents married? If so, it should hopefully be possible to find out her father's name from the marriage certificate. I suppose any adoption records, although he should get them, if he wants to, will only give his mothers new name. How does he know her name was changed?
  15. The only thing to add, really, is that Harold Clements born 1925 didn't seem to die young. You'd need to get his birth cert to find out whose child he was, of course. If he was Nellie's child, then perhaps someone took him in as she was so young.
  16. Often, Coroners records haven't been kept, although it's worth a try. Can you find her death in the GRO index? What was her surname and how old would she have been, roughly? (send it to me privately if you think it's a bit delicate). Also what was your Dad's surname and mothers maiden name and when was he born? If you can get her death cert and have actual date of death (perhaps without that, Nottm Archives wouldn't do any searching of the Mapperley records anyway), your best bet might be a report in the local paper.
  17. Babs The website I posted above says Nottm Archives has patients records for Mapperley Hospital for 1880-1959. I had a Great Aunt who died there in the 60's and I remember Nottm Archives telling me they didn't have anything - obviously just missed out, going by those dates.
  18. According to the Hospitals Database website records for patients are at Nottingham Archives, and some at Berkshire Archives (these may be for people who moved from Rampton to Broadmoor - not sure). You may have a probelm with gaining access as it's not quite 100 years, but worth a go! http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/hospitalrecords/search.asp
  19. Shift yer carcass - still say it to my sons
  20. I assume you mean Bill's mothers rather than parney!
  21. Beachbum I was told that, too! Remembered another one - if it looked as though it was going to rain, my Mum used to say "It looks as as though it's going to parney" but parney for rain wasn't used in any other way.
  22. Let me know if you find anything out from your sister!
  23. Joseph H Kirby seems to have married a Lucy Whitchurch in 1910. Found one child to them - Edna May, born 1912. She may have had children who might well still be alive. Found a few possibles for marriages for the other siblings but without the certs, can't tell which, if any of them, are right. Do you know who any of them married?
