On a different note, I experienced the current NHS appointment booking system yesterday. My arthritic knee has now become quite tight around my hamstring to the extent that any prolonged period of sitting or standing makes it really tighten up and the rest of the time I’m conscious that it’s not ok. So…. I managed to get through to the receptionist at the surgery to be told that I have to submit a form online and they would get back to me which I duly did. You should have worked in customer services Ben. I did a year working for a local council which had quite a lot of rundown areas and rundown people I hasten to add. Greetings from Tenerife ! Lizzie, I’m just like you. I always have a jobs list on the go and Mr B and his curiosity always has to have a look at it. Before I know it half of them are crossed off unless he’s at work. As you say never complain if they’re not done quite to your liking otherwise they won’t be done again! You can always re arrange Lizzie or Mrs B fashion and they never know.

We devised a simple but excellent piece of kit for scrumping. Just a piece of dowling with a cup hook on the end, worked a treat. The Bitterlings (of glue fame) had some very fruitful trees in their garden. Surprisingly we never got caught.

Oh yes Phil that was me! It actually wasn’t and I hadn’t heard of that story. It did make me laugh though. Pretty boring in ATC overnight, you definitely needed something to keep you awake when you have a small number of night flights.

My first job when I left school was as an Air traffic Control Assistant (ATCA) at Luton and one of the tasks on a night shift was updating the Air Pilot manual with amendments. It was a really thick volume of information. I can also remember these little paper strips which held info from the flight plan and were stored on boards for the controllers. Very simple and even now used with all the modern technology we have. I always said that it was the best job I ever gave up.

We have just got back from an epic valentines champagne afternoon tea on Great Central. I couldn’t fault it in any way. So much cake we brought some home with us. nice to do something a bit different.

nonnaB our family had 3 wedding breakfasts at the Chestnuts - ours, my brothers and my auntie. They were very good and at some point your husband must have been the manager. We used to get our meat from the very good butchers in Radcliffe or steak from the farm at Bassingfield where they used to hang it. Until one day we found maggots (yuck) and then stopped going there.

On another note West Bridgford announced as the 13th poshest place in England. Always called bread and lard island as you couldn’t afford to eat anything else after you had bought a house there. I had some really happy years at school there but we weren’t residents.

I wonder if the space under Burtons is still there? Used to love Burtons as a child and always had our turkey from there every year. Remember my father forget to order the Christmas Eve pick up one year and all they had left was an unplucked one. We must have spent hours that night sorting it out. What was the furniture shop near there on the Poultry called ? My brother worked there for a while.

Jill, my daughter was there from 1997 onwards so yes the teacher v nun teaching ratio was very different to the 60’s. It is now a part of the Loughborough Endowed Schools and consequently has more varied subject opportunities. My daughter was very lucky to have some amazing teachers who encouraged her love of art and history which she subsequently took a degree in at Nottingham. Now I have my own tour guide whenever we go on holidays anywhere. Good news about the cats.

Jill, my daughter went to Our Ladies Convent in Loughborough. I think during her time there they had mellowed a bit. Personally I don’t think she would have coped in a bigger establishment as she was at a very small primary school before and did have anxiety even about going there for the first year although some of her friends were already there. As a caring environment it was ideal and she still sees long lasting friends from those years, even her recorder teacher still keeps in touch. The fees crippled me as a one parent family at that point but it was worth it. It’s difficult to gauge how
